Burnley Receive Major Update Involving "Fantastic" £15m Star

Burnley have now received a major update on their pursuit of Sunderland winger Jack Clarke, who they have already submitted a £12m bid for.

What's the latest Burnley transfer news?

Although they have already spent a total of €91.6m (£78.3m) this summer, the Clarets still have the money to fund a pursuit of a new striker, with Football Insider reporting they are ready to spend £25m to sign a prolific forward before the deadline.

Vincent Kompany believes that adding a new prolific forward to his ranks will be key to his side's survival in the Premier League, and he is ready to spend big on the right player, having identified some potential options.

FC Nordsjaelland star Ernest Nuamah has recently been named as a target, with it being reported that Burnley are ready to make their move for the youngster, who is valued at £22m by his current club.

However, the Clarets could now be set to face fierce competition for Nuamah, with West Ham United recently submitting a bid, while Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion are said to be very keen admirers.

Not only is Kompany keen on adding a new striker, he is also running the rule over a new winger, with Football Insider reporting they have already submitted a bid of £10m, rising to £12m in add-ons for Clarke.

However, Sunderland have knocked back that offer, and it has now been reported that the Black Cats have slapped a £15m asking price on their in-demand attacker, who could be tempted by a move to the Premier League.

Despite having their opening bid knocked back, the Clarets retain an active interest in the left-winger, which suggests they could return to the negotiating table with an improved bid, closer to Sunderland's asking price, before the transfer window slams shut.

How many goals has Jack Clarke scored for Sunderland?

Although he is primarily a winger, the Englishman has managed to find the back of the net fairly regularly for Sunderland, scoring 13 goals in 74 games, during which time he has also weighed in with 18 assists, showcasing his play making abilities.

The York-born winger emerged as a key player for the Black Cats last season, weighing in with nine goals and 12 assists in 45 Championship games, indicating he may now be ready to make the step-up to the Premier League.

Sunderland forward Jack Clarke.

Early last season, the Sunderland star also showcased his versatility by starring at left-wing back, receiving praise from journalist James Copley for his performance, who said:

"Two assists of the highest quality and a superb individual goal for Jack Clarke tonight already. All coming from LWB. Not his preferred position coming to Sunderland but my god, what a performance this evening. Just fantastic."

Although a striker should be a key priority for Kompany, Clarke has proven that he could also be a fantastic addition to his squad, given that he is able to play in several positions, and poses a threat on the front foot, so Burnley should return with an improved offer in the near future.

BCB seeks reasons for Richard Pybus' return

He had been the head coach of Bangladesh in 2012, but quit the job after only five months, citing “interference from the board”

Mohammad Isam06-Dec-2017In 2012, when Richard Pybus was head coach of Bangladesh, he quit the job after only five months citing “interference by the board”. Now, in 2017, he is one of three prospective candidates to take charge of the team. The BCB has, nevertheless, asked him for an explanation for the comments he made five years ago.Board president Nazmul Hassan did not disclose Pybus’ reply, but said that his presentation focused on what he wanted to do for the future of Bangladesh cricket.Pybus was the senior team’s coach from June to October in 2012, and left after disagreements with the BCB. He had questioned the board directors’ knowledge of the game and alleged that details of his contract were released to the public as well.”Of course we had [his resignation from Bangladesh] in mind,” Hassan said. “We asked him plenty of questions about it. But it is better we don’t talk about the previous board. He is saying the same things [about the board]. I asked him, then why do you want to come now? He had his answer, but I don’t think we need to talk about it.”Hassan said that the BCB is looking to interview two more candidates after Pybus, one of whom is former West Indies international Phil Simmons, who is supposed to arrive on December 9. A decision on the head coach could be taken during a board meeting scheduled for the following day.”It is hard to say whether we are going to appoint a coach before the Sri Lanka series [in January 2018] but we are trying to get someone soon,” Hassan said. “Simmons will arrive on December 9 while another coach is also supposed to arrive within this time. We won’t reveal his name. We want to take a decision on our December 10 meeting.”

Rahul and Dhawan carry India into lead with ease

Both openers capitalised on vastly improved batting conditions, both overhead and underfoot, to lead India’s recovery on the fourth day in Kolkata

Chopra: SL bowlers looked ordinary on day four

Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan capitalised on vastly improved batting conditions, both overhead and underfoot, to lead India’s recovery on the fourth day in Kolkata. After Rangana Herath’s third Test fifty had bulked up Sri Lanka’s lead to 122, there was only one likely winner in the game. But then after Dhawan struck a 116-ball 94 and Rahul hit an unbeaten 73, there would be none it seemed.Mohammed Shami, on his home ground, rattled through Sri Lanka’s middle order to finish with four wickets, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar added two wickets on the fourth day to return 4 for 88 in bowling Sri Lanka out for 294. With Umesh Yadav also taking two wickets, this was the third time India’s seamers took all ten wickets in a Test innings at home, and the first such instance since 1983-84.Rahul and Dhawan then replied with aggression that has typified their recent Test run. Sunny overhead conditions and a surface that seemed to have settled down helped drastically. On most pitches, a slightly fuller-than-good length is ideal. But Lahiru Gamage bowled on either side of that, dishing out three half-volleys to Rahul in his first over, which were punched for three boundaries through mid-off. He compensated with a shorter length thereafter, erring in Dhawan’s wheelhouse, who cut and pulled gleefully. In Kolkata’s humidity, Dinesh Chandimal was quickly forced to turn his spinners. With no turn, it played nicely into the openers’ hands. Rahul nudged and nurdled, opening and closing the bat face to accumulate runs, while Dhawan was more expansive, often using his feet to loft the ball straight.Herath, more often than not Sri Lanka’s second-innings star, was taken apart. In 29 overs, India had wiped out their deficit, and undone more than three days of diligence from Sri Lanka.BCCIWith Dhawan on 94 and the light fading, he committed the only two mistakes of his innings off the same delivery. He drove loosely at Dasun Shanaka, but an inswinger found his inside edge. He reviewed immediately, and replays showed a sharp spike as ball passed bat. India finished the fourth day at 171 for 1, with a lead of 49. Cheteshwar Pujara, who finished unbeaten on 2, could become the ninth batsman to bat on all five days of a Test.Niroshan Dickwella and Chandimal began the fourth morning under sunny skies by counterattacking India’s seamers. But like Sadeera Samarawickrama found out on the third day, hitting through the line can be fraught with risk against the moving ball because it threatens both edges. Their approach worked for the first half hour, taking Sri Lanka to 200, a handy lead of 28, but just when it seemed like Sri Lanka wrested control, India hit back. Sri Lanka’s middle order tried to make contact with the ball, as opposed to allowing themselves to be beaten by playing the line. It was a ploy to move the Test along, and on a seaming surface like this, it wasn’t a bad one.Dickwella had punched, cut and pulled merrily, but was also beaten repeatedly. Shami got one to seam in from his around-the-wicket angle, then bounce and jag away – enough to find the outside edge, but not exaggerated movement to beat the edge.Bhuvneshwar, in the next over, set up Dasun Shanaka with an outswinger well outside off. He started the next ball on a similar line, but it hooped back prodigiously to hit Shanaka, offering no shot with an intent to leave as many as he could, on the back pad. Only James Anderson is more adept at using this tactic with the swinging ball in Tests currently.Five balls later, Chandimal was caught fishing outside his off stump against Shami. Again, the ball did just enough to find the outside edge. Suddenly, Sri Lanka had slipped to 201 for 7.It got worse for Sri Lanka when Dilruwan Perera was given out lbw off a sharp inducker from Shami that beat his inside edge. Dilruwan, it appeared, accepted the decision and turned around to walk towards the dressing room, but asked for a review moments later. Replays showed the ball hit Dilruwan outside the line of off stump.Herath was particularly effective with cross-batted strokes on either side of the wicket. He would frequently perch on the back foot, and depending on the line, either cut through point or pull past midwicket. Considering deliveries on a good or short length were routinely beating him with a straight bat, it was a rewarding strategy. He had moved to 67 before slicing a catch to deep backward point off Bhuvneshwar.

Newcastle Set To Sign Highly-Rated 18 y/o Wonderkid

Newcastle United are set to sign AC Milan defender Cathal Heffernan at some point this week, and a new report has made it clear how much they are expected to pay for the youngster.

What's the latest Newcastle transfer news?

Newcastle have been busy in the transfer market this summer, spending over €153.2m (£131.6m) on new signings, but they are not done just yet, with manager Eddie Howe recently admitting he would like to make one more addition to his squad, saying:

"You never quite know. You think you’ve got the perfect squad and you get five or six injuries. I’d love one more player, I’d love one personally. Then I think we’d have the ideal depth then."

TNT Sports journalist Nicolas Latini has claimed the Magpies have an "offer ready" for Estudiantes winger Benjamin Rollheiser, which amounts to around €10m (£8.6m), however, they are set to face competition for his signature from Aston Villa.

Howe also admitted that he may be willing to bring in a new player on loan as we enter the final two weeks of the summer transfer window, saying:

“We may have to be creative. It depends on the deal. It’s difficult because it depends on injuries before the end of the window.”

A deal of that nature could work well for Newcastle in their pursuit of a new left-back, with The Telegraph reporting they want to sign either Kieran Tierney or Marc Cucurella on loan from one of their Premier League rivals, as they are wary of FFP restrictions.

Not only are the Magpies keen on a new left-back, they are also running the rule over a centre-back, with TEAMtalk now reporting they are set to sign Heffernan at some point this week, after impressing during a two-week trial period on Tyneside.

The 18-year-old still has two years left on his contract with AC Milan, but the 2022-23 Champions League semi-finalists are happy to let him leave this summer, should a small compensation fee be paid.

Newcastle are keen to build a strong youth academy by bringing in players who will one day be capable of stepping up to the first-team, with the Irishman fitting the bill, and he is set to link up with the U21 side to begin with.

Who is Cathal Heffernan?

The Cork-born defender came through the youth ranks with his hometown club Cork City, before completing a move to AC Milan, where he made a total of 41 appearances for the Under-18 team.

After moving to Italy, the starlet was dubbed a highly-rated wonderkid by the media, having captained the Republic of Ireland's U17 team, and he has since gone on to make five appearances for the U18s.

Given that he is yet to make an appearance for club or country at senior level, though, it is evident the centre-back is a signing for the future, but attracting the interest of European giants Milan is no mean feat at the age of 16, when he initially made the move.

Having also impressed Newcastle during his recent trial, there is every indication that Heffernan could be a quality signing for the future, and Howe will be hoping to get the deal over the line this week.

Rangers Could Sign New Todd Cantwell At Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers got their first victory of the 2023/24 Premiership campaign at the weekend, defeating Livingston 4-0 at Ibrox.

With a vital Champions League qualifier to come on Tuesday evening, it was a step in the right direction and Michael Beale will be turning his attention to not only securing a win but also bolstering his squad.

Who could Rangers sign this summer?

According to Bristol Live, the Light Blues are showing interest in a centre-back heading into the final few weeks of the transfer window.

That player happens to be Zak Vyner. Indeed, he has entered into the final year of his current contract and while ‘fresh terms’ were offered earlier this year, the defender has yet to sign them, fuelling talk of a potential exit in the coming weeks as it represents the last chance Bristol City have of securing a fee for him.

Beale will face competition from Championship side Southampton, yet the lure of European football and the chance to win trophies should be more than enough incentive for the 26-year-old to choose Ibrox over St Mary’s.

Who is Zak Vyner?

The Gers have so far been linked with moves for Jake Cooper and Harry Souttar as Beale aims to bring in another defender, and Vyner is the latest name touted with a move.

By signing a player from an EFL club, the Ibrox side could certainly repeat their Todd Cantwell masterclass before the end of the window.

Todd Cantwell

The former Norwich City starlet arrived from the Championship in January and although he was once linked with a move to Aston Villa just two years ago, his form had dipped in the second tier.

Under Beale’s leadership, however, the 25-year-old was revitalised upon arriving in Glasgow. He registered 11 goal contributions across 20 games – six goals and five assists – while also ranking third for overall rating (7.36) and fourth for successful dribbles per game (1.5), demonstrating how much of a positive influence he had by moving north of the border.

Vyner has already experienced Scottish football, spending a brief spell on loan at Aberdeen during the 2019/20 season and he has grown into a solid centre-back who could give Beale another option at the heart of the defence.

The 5 foot 10 gem averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game last season in the Championship and these statistics would have ranked him seventh and first in the Rangers squad respectively.

He also offered a decent attacking threat, creating three big chances, which would have placed him joint-second across the defenders at Rangers while he registered four goal contributions, again, ranking him joint-second compared to the centre-backs at the Glasgow side.

It’s evident he could fit in well, especially with these statistics and his manager, Nigel Pearson, lauded him last term, saying: “Zak’s a good player, he’s come through the academy, and he’s probably suffered from being versatile. He’s matured this season there’s been more reliability.

“He’s gained experience and developed through the players that he’s played alongside as well so those things together are all a part of a player’s development. Even players in their 30s can develop and improve themselves if they’ve got an open mind.”

With the chance to secure his signature for a knockdown fee, Beale could bring a player who is arguably heading into his peak years to the club for a pittance, replicating the successful Cantwell deal in the process.

It would be a shrewd investment, no doubt about it.

MacLeod, seamers lead Scotland to six-wicket win

Safyaan Sharif and Alasdair Evans shared seven wickets between them to bowl Papua New Guinea out for 147, and Calum MacLeod’s unbeaten 60 helped Scotland easily finish the chase

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2017Calum MacLeod heaves his third six over midwicket to reach a half-century•Peter Della PennaCalum MacLeod’s unbeaten 60 helped Scotland chase 148 as they won by six wickets against Papua New Guinea in the first ODI in Dubai. Seamers Safyaan Sharif (4 for 38) and Alasdair Evans (3 for 23) decimated PNG’s batting order, sharing seven wickets between them to bowl their opponents out in the 45th over.PNG had a wobbly start after being put to bat first, losing five wickets within the first six overs, with four of the batsmen being dismissed for a duck, as Evans and Sharif struck back-to-back, leaving them reeling at 10 for 5. Captain Assad Vala and Kiplin Doriga’s 69-run stand for the sixth-wicket provided a brief relief for PNG, as the duo batted through the next 20 overs, taking them to 79 for 6. However, Scotland spinner Michael Leask broke their partnership, dismissing Doriga for 34, and two overs later Evans came back to dismiss Vala (40 off 78 balls) who finished as PNG’s top-scorer. The lower order chipped in with 63 runs to take PNG to 147 before slow-left armer Mark Watt sniped the tail out.PNG did not have a good start to their bowling either, as their seamer Norman Vanua bowled three straight wides, and one again after a legal delivery, as he gave away five runs in the first over. On the day, he conceded a total of five wides and two no balls.Scotland were off to a strong start in reply, as openers Matthew Cross and skipper Kyle Coetzer made 33 runs in 5 overs, although Cross contributed just one run to the partnership. He was dismissed by Chad Soper in the next over, which made way for MacLeod, who effected two solid partnerships thereafter to hand Scotland a comfortable win.

Gowtham four-for leads Karnataka's strong start

Group A round-up: Nitish Rana helps Delhi rally after top order wobble; rain abandons play without a ball bowled in Hyderabad

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2017Offspinner K Gowtham picked four wickets to lead Karnataka’s strong display. They skittled Assam for 145 after electing to bowl first in Mysore. Karnataka captain R Vinay Kumar (2 for 17) and legspinner Shreyas Gopal (3 for 43) combined to rip through the top and middle order before Gowtham carved up the tail. Gokul Sharma, the Assam captain, top-scored with 55. Karnataka’s openers R Samarth and Mayank Agarwal steered them to 77 for no loss at close.Delhi rallied around after losing their top three cheaply to put up 318 for 6 against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Gautam Gambhir, Unmukt Chand and Dhruv Shorey fell inside the first 10 overs as Delhi were tottering at 34 for 3. Nitish Rana repaired the damage with a fourth-wicket stand of 109 with Himmat Singh, who made 45. Rana top-scored with 89 and added 57 more for the fifth wicket before becoming offspinner Shivakant Shukla’s first victim. Anuj Rawat (74) and Manan Sharma (68 not out) then stitched together 111 for the sixth wicket to shore up the innings. After forcing the third and final T20 international between India and Australia to be abandoned without even the toss happening, inclement weather in Hyderabad has now washed out the opening day of the second-round fixture between the hosts and Uttar Pradesh at the Gymkhana Ground. Hyderabad are yet to step onto the field for a single ball in this Ranji Trophy, having suffered a similar fate in the first-round fixture against Maharashtra. Another washout could severely hurt their qualification chances.

Rangers: Clue Spotted Indicating Next Move Of "Very Quick" Player

Reports have emerged which suggest that Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo could be on the move this summer, with a large clue revealed about his potential next destination.

Matondo struggled for game time at Ibrox last season, making just 15 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

What's the latest on Rabbi Matondo's future at Rangers?

Matondo was spotted at Elland Road in Leeds United's opening day draw with Cardiff City in the Championship, according to Football Insider – adding to the speculation that the winger could be sold to the Yorkshire club this summer.

If Matondo did make the move, it would come just one year after he decided to make the switch to Rangers from Schalke for an undisclosed fee.

The Welshman, under contract until 2026, joined with plenty of potential, and hope of realising that potential in Scotland. Things just haven't worked out, however, with the winger's failure to score a single goal alongside his low number of five assists representing a debut campaign of struggle.

Michael Beale even admitted last season that Matondo was struggling for confidence, saying, via Football Scotland:

"He's a young boy. He's an international, played in the Bundesliga, played in the Belgian league, he's here for a reason.

"He's maybe having a crisis of confidence, it would have been lovely if he had scored that goal, for him and for everyone.

"He's our player, we trust him, we bought him for a reason and we will help him out the other side of it."

Given the fact that he has been left out of Rangers' European squad this season, too, everything is pointing towards an exit for the winger.

That's where Leeds could come in, however, with their need for a winger potentially growing should Wilfried Gnonto and Crysensio Summerville leave this summer, as reports have suggested they could.

Should Rangers selll Rabbi Matondo?

After failing to make an impact at Rangers, Matondo represents a risk for most clubs. But, if Leeds lose both Gnonto and Summerville this summer, then they may be left with limited options when it comes to targets.

It seems as though Rangers are keen to get Matondo off their books, too, after leaving him out of their European squad, potentially opening the door for a cut-price deal in the coming weeks.

Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…

At his best, the winger can be quite the threat, and has earned praise when showing his best form, with John Hartson telling Go Radio, via Ibrox News:

"Good players, I have seen a bit of Rabbi Matondo, with the Welsh set-up, very quick, very direct, skilful. He’s one for the future but I think he can make an impact."

With that said, although the deal may be a risky one after his difficult campaign last time out, if Leeds got Matondo back to his best, then they could have themselves a key player.

From Rangers point of view, they may feel that an exit could be best for them and the player, so his future could be one to keep an eye over the coming days.

Leeds United: Big Joel Piroe update emerges with Leicester & Saints

Leeds United are trying to complete the signing for Joel Piroe from Swansea City, but are facing a number of obstacles according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The striker would be a "really good signing" by Leeds according to the journalist.

What is the latest Joel Piroe news?

Swansea are preparing for offers for the forward this upcoming month.

According to reports from Football Insider, all three recently relegated sides are interested in the 23-year-old this summer, however the Welsh side aren't in a rush to sell the forward despite him having just 12 months remaining on his contract at the Swansea.com Stadium, with the club asking for £15-20m to let him go this summer.

Leeds are hoping to bring in the striker to replace Spaniard Rodrigo, who was the Yorkshire clubs top scorer last campaign with 11 goals, and Piroe is seen as the ideal replacement due to being versatile like the Spaniard and being able to play both as a striker and an attacking midfielder.

joel-piroe-leeds-united-transfer-news-championship

The Dutch striker impressed in the Championship last season, scoring 20 and assisting two in 45 games and receiving praise from former manager Russel Martin, who stated after Piroe's winner against Bristol City "I thought Joel was outstanding. I thought he took his goal brilliantly, and he looked a real threat all night, He was a real threat and he worked so hard out of possession, he was absolutely finished at the end when we took him off. It is exciting for us to see what he can go on and achieve this season.”

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs revealed that Leeds aren't as interested compared to Southampton, Leicester City and OGC Nice: "He could be a really good signing. He is obviously playing in pre-season at the moment and Swansea's asking price is relatively high. It's going to be difficult for anybody to pull off a deal at value. At the moment, I think that Leeds are not necessarily the one to watch compared to the likes of Leicester and Southampton, who have looked. Away from English football, there's been some interest from Nice as well. But nothing is necessarily imminent at this point."

Who will Leeds sign this summer?

Leeds are still looking to make additions this window.

The club have already signed Ethan Ampadu and Karl Darlow this window from Chelsea and Newcastle United respectively. The side are also looking at a potential move for Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, with the club nearing an agreement with the Scottish side for £5m according to Football Insider. The midfielder was a crucial part of the Rangers side for a number of seasons however saw his game time diminish under new boss Michael Beale. The club are also interested in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips according to reports. The deal is set to cost around £10m for a player Jurgen Klopp described as a "monster in the air".

Leeds United forwardWilfried Gnonto.

A number of players could still depart Elland Road this summer as well. Italian forward Wilfried Gnonto has already been the subject of a rejected bid worth £15m from Everton, whilst Crystal Palace and Aston Villa hold an interest in the forward. According to Dean Jones, the forward wants to leave this summer and could become "restless" if he isn't sold by the clubs first game of the season. Midfielder Tyler Adams is another who has informed manager Daniel Farke of his desire to leave this summer in order to continue playing at the highest level, with interest from Villa and West Ham United turning the injured players head.

Patel rages against the drop to keep Yorkshire's nerves on edge

A Jeetan Patel century has kept Warwickshire in a contest at Headingley that Yorkshire need to win to calm their own fears of a drop into Division Two

County Championship round-up: Kleinveldt puts pressure on Notts

Yorkshire 62 for 1 (Lyth 35*) trail Warwickshire 219 (Patel 100, Fisher 5-54) by 157 runs A freewheeling hundred by Jeetan Patel, which might have been designed to banish the frustrations of a relegation season in a single innings, has kept Warwickshire in a contest at Headingley that Yorkshire need to win to calm their own fears of a drop into Division Two.The decrepit old Rugby Stand might be about to be pulled down, but Yorkshire have no wish to go down with it. A hole at one end of the ground is one thing, a hole in the heart of every Yorkshire cricket supporter quite another. In fifth place at the start of this round, one point above Somerset and Middlesex, they wish to put an awkward transitional season to bed without further alarms.Patel ensured a few restless nights yet. Simplicity is the essence of his batting and the fact that Warwickshire’s relegation is assured uncluttered his mind even further. He clattered anything wide to the cover boundary with aplomb, turning 49 for 6 into 219 – unexpected riches. Patel and Ian Bell got a century and half-century apiece and the other nine batsmen managed 54 between them.Patel only has three first-class centuries and two have come against Yorkshire. He did not outstay his welcome once it was achieved, falling lbw to Matt Fisher’s next delivery as he tried to hit through the leg side. Fisher finished with 5 for 54 in his first Championship appearance of the season. From a single bowling analysis much good can come.”Get through the season” has been the gist of Yorkshire’s message to Fisher. If it had to be the 2nd XI then so be it. There is no point being the most highly-regarded young quick in the country if your hamstring is not up to the job. Three times it let him down last year, once while batting. He skippered England Under-19s in India, but regarded his own body suspiciously. For an enthusiast like Fisher, identified as a talent at an early age and eager to make his mark, to be regarded as a long-term project and asked to bowl within himself while his body strengthened, cannot have been easy. He looked a little down on pace, perhaps as a consequence, but the wickets came. He was on a few long lists for the 2019 World Cup and, if that is no longer the case, this was the first sign of better things ahead.Jeetan Patel batting for Warwickshire•Getty ImagesLiam Banks, an England U19 on Championship debut, was Fisher’s first victim, edging a ball of challenging line which bounced and left him just enough. But Bell was his most prized wicket, a relief for Yorkshire after a stand of 96 for the seventh wicket.Bell, showing occasional silkiness while Warwickshire collapsed around him, reached 50 by edging Fisher wide of gully, but he fell in Fisher’s next over as he took the last four wickets at a time when Patel was causing growing disquiet. Chris Wright followed in Fisher’s next over, another lbw victim.Yorkshire conceded 142 between lunch and tea and it was a surprise that it only brought one plaintiff cry of “C’mon Yorkshire”. In the Rugby Stand, where the sun never intrudes, the diehards looked on with a critical air, as diehards have often done, offering corrugated opinions under the corrugated roof for the past 90 years. The morning had belonged to Yorkshire, prospering after Jonathan Trott took the chance to bowl first – unusual for a 10.30am start in September, especially when the home side needed a positive result. Yorkshire fielded five pace bowlers, as if uncertain which ones would rouse themselves to the task. Jack Brooks led the way with the first two wickets, Trott falling to an excellent diving catch by Adam Lyth at second slip, Ben Coad following up.Collectors of cricketing oddities would be disappointed that the chance of Ryan Sidebottom bowling to Ryan Sidebottom went begging because Yorkshire’s Ryan Sidebottom, whose name really should have been copyrighted years ago, had a hamstring strain. More pertinently, it has denied him a Headingley farewell and with the final Championship match of the season due at Chelmsford next week, it might deny him any sort of farewell at all.But he can be hurrahed here at any rate, 762 first-class wickets to his name, a model professional entering retirement at 39. A bowler who upped sticks and spent the middle period of his career at Nottinghamshire but who, even when he did, remained the very essence of a Yorkshire cricketer. It might have all ended with him looking exasperated and cursing a flat one at The Oval as Surrey made 592, resenting every run as always. Perhaps it was a suitable way to go.
