Tottenham: Daily Mail make Traore transfer claim

The Daily Mail have now shared an interesting Tottenham Hotspur transfer update involving Wolverhampton Wanderers forward and current Barcelona loanee Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye January move…

The Spaniard was a serious Premier League transfer target for Spurs in the winter window, as backed by reliable sources like The Athletic, who revealed that manager Antonio Conte was eyeing him as a makeshift right-wing-back option.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

GiveMeSport even shared news that a move was very close at one point with both the Lilywhites and Traore’s representatives shaking hands on personal terms and agreeing to make him the club’s fourth-highest earner.

However, when the Catalans swooped in late-on, Tottenham’s plans were scuppered and Conte was left without a new-and-improved wing-back signing.

The Latest: Mail share interesting update…

The Mail, sharing news after Conte held crunch transfer talks with sporting director Fabio Paratici in Italy on Friday, now say that Traore has re-emerged as a target for Spurs.

Indeed, according to reliable reporter Mokbel, writing for the outlet, Tottenham’s boss has seemingly set his sights on a former flame.

The Verdict: Move on?

We believe, with some serious work, Traore could still be an asset for Conte as a makeshift attacking option on the right side of his defence – particularly considering he averaged a phenomenal 4.2 dribbles per 90 for Wolves before joining Barca (WhoScored).

It’s clear, when at his very best, the 26-year-old can be an extreme threat from out wide and members of the media seem to agree having watched him in England regularly.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke, commenting on the links to Spurs in January, raved over the ‘absolute world-beater’ who ‘nobody can stop’ with his pace and power.

Depending on Wolves’ asking price, it could well be a move Conte should consider.

Liverpool closing in on Tchouameni deal

Liverpool have had their hopes of signing Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni boosted.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from RMCSport who claim that Tchouameni has reached an agreement with both Liverpool and Real Madrid, with both clubs now negotiating with AS Monaco.

It is said that the young Frenchman will make his choice before the end of the week, though, what has been confirmed is the rejection towards PSG, with the 22-year-old ruling the French champions out.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Either way, it looks as though Liverpool are now closer to their second signing of the summer after agreeing upon a deal to bring Fabio Carvalho to Anfield.

Thiago 2.0 closer than ever

With Liverpool having agreed terms with the midfielder, the deal is closer than ever.

After what has been months of build-up, it looks as though the Monaco star will confirm his future by the end of the week. With both teams fighting for Champions League glory on the 28th of May, it remains to be seen as to whether the Bordeaux youth product will make his decision before the clash of the European giants.

If he opts to join Klopp’s side though. he could seize on an opportunity to develop his game positionally and push up to a more offensive-minded role in central midfield.

If this was the case, his outstanding technical ability on the ball would allow him to fit into the mould of the Spanish maestro, Thiago, whose style has benefited Klopp’s side massively this season. It’s also worth noting that the France international is noted as a similar player to the 31-year-old, based on his numbers this year (as per FBref)

As a holding midfielder for Monaco, his defensive acumen will come as no surprise, with all central midfielders in a Klopp system expected to be competent in the out-of-possession phase of the game.

Tchouameni’s average of 6.47 tackles plus interceptions per game is an outstanding return, but so is Thiago’s at an average of 5.90. You get the impression that Liverpool’s heavy metal approach to pressing would see Tchouameni’s metrics rise even higher.

Despite the 22-year-old’s shot-creating actions lacking, with an average of 2.07 SCA per game, the Monaco star has managed to drum up the same number of returns as Thiago this season, who boasts a match average of 3.21 SCA.

£60m Tchouameni, who’s capable of a “magnificent” long-range strike, has three goals and two assists to show for his 35 appearances in Ligue 1, primarily as a holding midfielder. Whilst Thiago has clocked up one goal and four assists in ten less games, his game is more about holding the ball and progressing the Reds.

Tchouameni’s metrics are entirely promising, and if he is to choose Liverpool over Madrid, he could well develop into a technical master like Thiago.

Tottenham: Romano shares exciting news as Conte ‘very happy’

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is ‘very happy’ as reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano shares an exciting behind-the-scenes update.

The Lowdown: Conte wants backing…

Spurs’ head coach, who guide the Premier League top-four chasers to a previously unthinkable Champions League finish, will reportedly meet with both chairman Daniel Levy and transfer chief Fabio Paratici to outline his summer transfer plans.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As many as six major signings are on his mind, including a reserve goalkeeper, right-wing-back, central defender, two midfielders and a forward, according to The Telegraph.

The Italian wants backing ahead of his first full season in charge, and according to Romano, they are set to make two star loans permanent on Conte’s behalf.

The Latest: Romano shares exciting update…

The reliable reporter claims Spurs’ boss is ‘very happy’ with both Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero who have both starred under his tutelage.

As such, Spurs ‘will invest’ around €80 million (£68m) in total to seal their signings indefinitely.

Romano explained:

“Tottenham will sign both Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero on a permanent deal. Spurs will invest around €80m total fee for two players who are considered key part of the project for present and future. #THFC Antonio Conte’s also very happy with Romero and Kulusevski.”

The Verdict: Huge…

Both men have been shining under Conte and have played big roles in Tottenham’s chase for the top four.

Romero has been a colossal presence in the Spurs back three while Kulusevski, who joined on loan from Juventus in January, has formed a deadly understanding with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min as part of the Lilywhites front three.

In a major statement of intent, the north Londoners securing both men is a fine way to show Conte they’re serious about matching his ambition.

Marsch must axe Leeds flop Rodrigo

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch must unleash an out-and-out striker against Brighton and Hove Albion this afternoon in a desperate bid to keep the Yorkshire giants in the Premier League.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Whites in recent weeks as they now find themselves in the relegation zone with only two games left remaining this campaign.

Both the American and his predecessor Marcelo Bielsa have rued the absence of last season’s top goalscorer, Patrick Bamford, through a variety of injuries and it has certainly cost them dearly.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Only Raphinha has hit double figures for Leeds in 2021/22.

Six teams have scored fewer than the Whites’ 39 league goals and the Brazil international has accounted for 25.6% of that – and 33.3% when factoring in his assists, too.

One of the more underwhelming players this season has been Rodrigo and across the last 17 outings, he’s failed to start one match. On the contrary, he’s lasted the full 90 in only eight of those, as per Transfermarkt.

Across his last four games, in which he’s led the line, the £13.5m-rated Spaniard has failed to score or assist, adding to Leeds’ woes in the final third.

In terms of that attacking output, he ranks fourth for average number of shots per game (1.5) and that has only correlated into six goals across 29 appearances, via WhoScored.

Considering he was once the club’s record signing at £26m and is easily their highest-earning player on a reported £100k-per-week, it’s not great reading and if anything, he’s been holding them back.

Earlier this month, his poor form was highlighted by journalist Beren Cross, who claimed there were still plenty of question marks over his ability for the big time.

“He had that little spurt of goals and performances and uptick and then against Palace and City he was completely anonymous, which kind of sums up his entire tenure at least so far really,” he told LeedsLive.

“It hasn’t really got going for him I think injuries and COVID have played their part, especially in his first season, but ultimately, yes, there are still major questions about his impact on this team and his input and what he’s good at.”

As such, with Bamford still unable to start, Marsch must be bold with his team selection and opt for someone like Joe Gelhardt instead of the struggling Spanish flop.

It’s a decision that could seriously aid Leeds’ quest to remain a Premier League outfit.

510 kilometers over 22 yards, and a wicket before his first ball

Fifteen freakish numbers from Virat Kohli’s 15-year international career

Sampath Bandarupalli18-Aug-2023More than 500 kilometres between wickets
In his 15-year-long international career, Virat Kohli has run roughly 277km between wickets for his non-boundary scoring shots. He’s also covered some 233km for his partners’ runs when he’s been at the crease, taking the tally to approximately 510km. Only once has Kohli run an all-run four to date, during an ODI in 2013 against Zimbabwe.ESPNcricinfo LtdAn average of 518
Kohli’s success with the bat in T20 World Cups is well documented. He was Player of the Tournament in both 2014 and 2016, and his record in chases is particularly outstanding. India have won nine of the ten matches during which he has batted in chases, and he’s remained unbeaten on eight occasions.Kohli averages 270.5 in those ten chases, which is nearly twice the average of the next best, Marcus Stoinis (146), among batters to have played a minimum of five innings. Kohli’s average shoots up to 518 in successful chases, close to five times that of the second-best, Cameron White (104).Helmet off at 46 venues
Kohli has played at 83 venues in his international career so far, and has scored hundreds in 46 of them. Adelaide Oval is the standout venue for Kohli; it has witnessed five of his 76 tons. Only one player has had a hundred on more grounds than Kohli – Sachin Tendulkar, unsurprisingly, at 53 venues.ESPNcricinfo LtdA perfect start to World Cups
Kohli made a dream start to his World Cup career with an unbeaten century against Bangladesh in Dhaka in the opening match of the 2011 edition. A year later, he scored a fifty on his T20 World Cup debut against Afghanistan, to become the first player to complete the double of a hundred on Men’s ODI World Cup debut and a fifty on Men’s T20 World Cup debut. Aaron Finch matched this double, with a fifty in the 2014 T20 World Cup and a century on the opening day of the 2015 ODI World Cup.Excelling in oppositions’ backyards
Kohli has scored a century in all nine countries where he has played ODI cricket, and in seven of the eight countries in Test cricket, with Bangladesh the only exception. He has scored both Test and ODI hundreds in six countries against the home team – Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa and West Indies. Only two players have had both Test and ODI tons against the host nation in as many or more countries as Kohli – seven by Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.Nearly 1000 runs in ten innings
In 2018, between February and October, Kohli scored nearly 1000 runs in a span of ten ODI innings. Kohli amassed 995 runs between his 197th and 206th ODI innings at an average of 142.14, with five hundreds and three fifties. It is the best 10-innings ODI streak for any batter. He surpassed by 138 runs the previous record held by David Warner for scoring 857 runs between October 2016 and June 2017.

166 not out thumps 73 all out
Virat Kohli made 166 not out against Sri Lanka in the Thiruvananthapuram ODI earlier this year, as India plundered 390 for five in their 50 overs. They went on to win by a record 317 runs, the biggest-ever in men’s ODIs, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for only 73.Kohli alone outscored the Lankans by 93 runs, the second-biggest difference between a batter’s score and the opposition’s total in a men’s ODI game. The highest also came during an India-Sri Lanka ODI, when Sanath Jayasuriya made 189 and outscored India (54 all out) by 135 runs in 2000.Dealing in double tons
Until 2016, Kohli had 11 hundreds in 41 Tests, but had gone past the 150 mark only once – 169 against Australia in Melbourne in 2014 – and had been dismissed seven times below 120. But between 2016 and 2019, he converted seven of his 15 hundreds into double hundreds, an Indian record. Kohli also became the first-ever player with double tons in four consecutive Test series – scoring them against West Indies, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh in the 2016-2017 period.A unique double
Kohli recorded the fastest ODI hundred for India in 2013, a 52-ball ton against Australia in Jaipur after coming in to bat in the 27th over. Later in the same series, he smashed a 61-ball ton in Nagpur, the third fastest for India in the format. Kohli walked in to bat in the 30th over in Nagpur, making him the only batter with multiple hundreds in ODI chases while coming in to bat after the 25th over. Kevin Pietersen, Abdul Razzaq, Jacob Oram and Jos Buttler are the only other batters with a hundred in an ODI chase having arrived after the completion of the 25th over (where data is available).Going 5-0 three times
Kohli’s first full assignment as India captain was the 2013 tour of Zimbabwe, where he led India to a 5-0 win in the ODI series, a result he witnessed twice more as captain in the next few years. In the absence of MS Dhoni, Kohli successfully led India to a 5-0 win against Sri Lanka at home in 2014. In 2017, Sri Lanka were once again on the receiving end of a 5-0 defeat, this time in their backyard. Kohli remains the only captain in men’s ODI cricket with three whitewashes in series of four matches or more.Making it count in big chases
Though Kohli is three hundreds away from equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record 49 hundreds in the ODI format, he is well ahead while chasing. He now has 26 centuries in ODI chases, nine more than Tendulkar’s 17. As many as nine of Kohli’s chasing hundreds have come when India have been in pursuit of 300-plus targets. The nearest contender on this list is Jason Roy, with five such hundreds, while four other batters have four tons apiece in 300-run target chases.ESPNcricinfo LtdIndia’s youngest debutant opener
Virat Kohli made his International debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2008, aged 19 years and 287 days. He opened the innings in that game, making him the youngest Indian to open on men’s ODI debut, a record that still stands. Only three players younger than Kohli have opened the batting for India in men’s ODIs – Parthiv Patel, Yuvraj Singh and Vinod Kambli. Kohli, who opened in all five matches during that series, has returned to the position only twice more in these 15 years. The zeroth ball wicket
Virat Kohli opened his wickets tally in T20Is even before he bowled a legitimate delivery. He had Kevin Pietersen stumped off a wide in 2011 when he came on to bowl his first ball in the format. He remains the only player to claim a wicket off his 0th ball in any format in men’s internationals. There have been only three other instances of a bowler taking a wicket before bowling their first legal delivery in a men’s T20I innings: Graeme Swann against Shoaib Malik in 2010, Sunil Narine against Martin Guptill in 2012 and Shakib Al Hasan against Lendl Simmons in 2014.Master of the big stand
Kohli has regularly been part of long partnerships in ODI cricket. He holds the record for featuring in 13 double-hundred stands. He has shared five of them with Rohit Sharma, the most by any pair in the format. Rohit is second on the list, having been part of ten double-century stands, while no other player has featured in more than seven. The other eight double-hundred stands of Kohli have involved six partners – Gautam Gambhir (three), Virender Sehwag, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav and Ishan Kishan.Jamaica to Jamaica
Virat Kohli made his Test debut at Sabina Park in 2011, shortly after being part of India’s World Cup triumph. Eight years later, at the same venue, Kohli was crowned India’s most successful captain in Test cricket when they beat West Indies by 257 runs. With 28 wins as India Test captain, Kohli surpassed MS Dhoni’s 27 wins. Kohli added 12 more victories, finishing with 40 Test wins, the fourth-highest for any captain.

Surrey face crucial game at Durham after eye-catching washout

Emma Jones, Alice Davidson-Richards shine with centuries before rain hits

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay10-Sep-2025Surrey 313 for 5 (Jones 141, Davidson-Richards 107) vs Essex match abandonedRain denied Surrey the chance of securing a semi-final spot in the Metro Bank Women’s One-Day Cup, after centuries from Emma Jones and Alice Davidson-Richards had put them in a commanding position over Essex. With Somerset washed out away to Hampshire, a bonus-point victory for Surrey would have been enough to secure fourth place ahead of their final match away to Durham on Saturday.Instead, the rain, which arrived at the innings break and didn’t stop, means the match at Chester-le-Street now turns into an effective quarter-final, with Durham in fifth place and only three points behind Surrey.Surrey had made two changes to their team that lost to Lancashire at the weekend, one of which was Jones coming in at No.3 in place of Alice Capsey.Jones had played just one fifty-over match for Surrey this year, and while showing glimpses with the bat across the T20 season, no-one predicted that her inclusion would bring such dramatic results, as she compiled a chanceless 141 off only 117 balls to record her first century for Surrey.Jones entered this season without a half-century to her name in List A cricket, but has now scored two massive centuries in the format, after making 147 not out off 101 balls earlier this year while on loan at Glamorgan. After rain early in the day, Surrey’s innings had been reduced to 45 overs, although they still managed to finish on 313 for 5 on what was a difficult day in the field for Essex, who with just two wins from 13 matches, remain bottom of the table.”Jonesy was hitting them wonderfully,” said Davidson-Richards, who made 107.”I was just enjoying helping her along and watching her smash fours at the other end. I think sometimes it’s really simple and you just realise how the other person is ticking. It was a really nice partnership.”

Liverpool officials spotted scouting teenage prodigy dubbed the Ivorian Vinicius

Liverpool have now reportedly sent scouts to track RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young talents around European football.

The Reds will be relieved to have an international break. It’s been a disastrous month or so for Arne Slot’s side, who have lost five of their last six Premier League games and were just humbled by a superior Manchester City side. In the space of 11 games in a fresh campaign, the champions’ crown hasn’t just slipped, it has crumbled.

After FSG spent over £400m to break Liverpool’s transfer record twice in the summer, Slot simply must turn things around. The Dutchman will be given time to do that – Liverpool have never been a side to make rash decisions – but the pressure is certainly growing on the Dutchman.

The solutions could yet come courtesy of even more spending in the January transfer window. There’s been something missing from the current squad so far this season and as the Premier League becomes more physical, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes could adjust their strategy.

Liverpool’s struggles have already sparked several rumours ahead of the winter window, too. The likes of Antoine Semenyo and Wilfried Singo have been among those mentioned as potential reinforcements, but it remains to be seen whether the Reds splash the cash once again.

Liverpool exploring Jarrod Bowen move as West Ham share sale conditions

The Reds have set their sights on another attacking reinforcement.

ByTom Cunningham Nov 14, 2025

Semenyo would certainly add another attacking spark to a frontline full of talented players who are currently struggling to find form. The addition of someone who needs no introduction to Anfield goals could go a long way towards solving Slot’s problems. Meanwhile, Edwards and Hughes also have one eye on the future and those who will make an impact in years to come.

Liverpool send scouts to track Yan Diomande

As reported by Bild in Germany, Liverpool scouts have now been spotted watching Diomande at RB Leipzig. The 19-year-old winger has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, scoring three goals and assisting another three in 10 league games, and has attracted the interest of PSG as well as those at Anfield as a result.

The teenager is not short on confidence or ambition, having compared himself to Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior when speaking to reporters about his current role models to Transfermarkt.

It’s not just the left-winger, himself, who believes in his ability though. Talent scout Jacek Kulig praised Diomande for the “brilliant” spell of form that he’s enjoyed in recent months to attract the likes of Liverpool and PSG.

Third-wicket stand of 141 with Haseeb Hameed overhauls Glamorgan with ease

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-Aug-2025Nottinghamshire 282 for 3 (Haynes 124, Hameed 58*) beat Glamorgan 278 for 9 (Byrom 62, Root 56) by seven wicketsJack Haynes starred with a century as Notts Outlaws kept their qualification chances at arm’s length with a comfortable run chase against winless defending champions Glamorgan. The 24-year-old Haynes struck a well-timed 124 with some late acceleration to chase the sub-par 278 for 9 set by the hosts.Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed played supporting roles in the seven-wicket win, the latter combining with Haynes for a 141-run third-wicket stand.Eddie Byrom notched up back-to-back half-centuries with 62 while Billy Root also passed 50 to hold together the Glamorgan innings. One positive for the winless side was 18-year-old Romano Franco picking up a first professional wicket at the third time of asking. After being inserted, Glamorgan got off to a racing start, as has tended to be their way in this competition. Byrom and Asa Tribe’s 71-run opening stand left Notts’ bowling attack – hit by the absence of players in the Hundred – with cause for concern before Tribe’s fun was ended by 18-year-old debutant Byron Hatton-Lowe.Byrom, the steadier of the two openers in terms of strike rate, continued calmly as he watched on for Henry Hurle, playing a first Glamorgan game of 2025, to be dismissed.Kiran Carlson was unable to kick on, as was Will Smale who suffered a ball-watching run out to leave the hosts with just five wickets in hand with more than 20 overs to bat, a theme too common in their campaign.Root held the fort in a knock of few boundaries for 56 before Dan Douthwaite’s blistering cameo added some impetus, the hosts still left short.Zain Ul Hassan was able to contain in a seven-over new-ball spell while Ned Leonard leaked at the other end, Slater enjoying a rather comfortable start. After Ben Martindale was dismissed, a period of experience was due with Slater and Haynes adding 75 before Hameed struck an unbeaten 58 to ice the run chase.Franco impressed in his 10 overs but poor fielding, including a drop by Andy Gorvin with Haynes on 68 proved costly.Tribe followed as the third player in the game to take a first wicket for his club, after Hatton-Lowe and Franco, although the damage was done.

Chelsea join Daniel Munoz race as Crystal Palace star reveals true "dream" move

Chelsea have now reportedly joined the race to sign Crystal Palace star Daniel Munoz, who has already revealed where his “dream” move away lies.

Those at Stamford Bridge aren’t wasting any time before thinking about 2026 reinforcements in an attempt to improve Enzo Maresca’s young side. They were at their ruthless best against Wolverhampton Wanderers, dispatching of the managerless relegation candidates to win 3-0.

Full of praise for his side following a convincing victory, Maresca expressed his delight whilst also admitting that Chelsea could have scored even more goals at Stamford Bridge.

That said, as happy as Maresca was, improvements could still be on the way. BlueCo haven’t exactly been shy when it comes to recruitment in recent years and that looks set to continue in 2026.

After spending big last summer, the Blues are already reportedly eyeing Karl Etta Eyong who has admitted that he dreams of completing a move to Stamford Bridge to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Didier Drogba.

The Levante star has scored six goals in 12 games this season and is now one of the hottest prospects in European football. When next summer arrives, he could yet get the chance to realise his Chelsea dream, whilst another transfer target also potentially gets his move.

Chelsea join Daniel Munoz race as "dream" move shared

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea have now joined the race to sign Munoz from Crystal Palace following an excellent spell at Selhurst Park. Joining the Blues in pursuit of the right-back, however, is Barcelona. The Spanish giants are looking to spoil Chelsea’s plans and help Munoz realise what he previously admitted is a dream move when playing for Belgian side Genk.

Having now ticked off his Premier League dream, it’s difficult to imagine a world in which Munoz turns Barcelona down if they come calling. The good news for Chelsea is that, either way, they’ll be able to bid farewell to playing against such a talented star.

Wayne Rooney backtracks on 'downed tools' criticism of Virgil van Dijk but insists Liverpool skipper should ignore 'noise' & 'focus on his game' amid Reds' struggles

After taking time to consider his stinging comments, Wayne Rooney has conceded he was wrong to claim Virgil van Dijk had "downed tools" after signing a new deal at Liverpool. The row had threatened to boil over as the pair clashed live on TV, but the former England and Manchester United star has moved to cool the disagreement and also offered Van Dijk advice on how to get the champions' faltering season back on track.

Rooney and Van Dijk's public spat

Man Utd legend Rooney criticised the Liverpool captain's leadership and form during a difficult run for the Reds, suggesting the Netherlands international’s body language was a "big concern" and that he and Mohamed Salah "haven't really led that team this season" after signing new deals. Van Dijk swiftly hit back, branding the comments "a bit of a lazy criticism". He added "I didn't hear him last year" during Liverpool's march to the title, implying pundits are quick to criticise during downturns in form.

The row escalated when the pair were face-to-face after the Champions League clash between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Van Dijk told Rooney he felt the comments were "over the top" at times, especially the "comment that I signed my new deal and then it was like 'that is it' and I let it slide". Rooney stood by his performance critique on the night, but he has now had a change of heart and further explained his comments, despite the Reds' recent 3-0 defeat by Manchester City.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Maybe I was wrong on that'

Rooney, speaking on with Sky Bet, said: "My job now is to give my opinions, and I like to think I'm straight and honest with my opinions and how I feel. The one thing where I maybe went a bit too strong is where I said he’s downed tools since he signed his new contract – that's a big thing to say, and maybe I was wrong on that. But from a performance level, from what we’ve seen from Van Dijk, I don’t think he's been at that level this season, and I said I’m sure as captain he’d be speaking to players, taking them out for food, which he said he has done. Clearly if he's felt he’s done that, if he had to do that, there’s something not right.

He added: "As champions, you can’t lose four games in a row. If you lose one game, there’s questions, and if you lose four in a row, there’s something not quite right. I think getting involved too much in the outside noise – that’s our job [as pundits], focus on your game. As a younger player, I’d be looking at Van Dijk and how he reacts to this – how is it going to help them? You have to get on with your game and speak internally."

Rooney focuses on leadership

Rooney added: "I’ve had criticism much worse than what I said about Van Dijk – both on and off the pitch. Of course, people talk and you take someone’s opinion a bit more serious than others but go and do your talking on the pitch. That’s all he needs to do. I’ve praised van Dijk, about his performances and how good he’s been but, if you’re the Premier League champions and you’re the captain of Liverpool, and they aren’t performing as well, (you will come in for some criticism).

"We used to do it with Cristiano Ronaldo, where Ronaldo wouldn’t defend as much, and we would all work a bit harder. But it’s a tough game and you’re playing against a top team; you scream at your players to get back in and help. That’s what I was saying about leadership – you need to understand what game you’re in and the importance of the game."
