According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a £50m swoop for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay, who has impressed since leaving Manchester United in 2017.
The Netherlands international only managed seven goals in 53 games for United, which is hardly a great return for a player in the final third of the field.
Since moving to Lyon, though, the 25-year-old has registered 50 goals in 130 appearances, in addition to contributing an impressive 42 assists.
This season, the Dutchman has 11 goals in 14 matches in all competitions, including seven in 10 outings in France’s top flight.
According to The Mirror, Spurs are weighing up a £50m bid for Depay, but it would be fair to say that the club’s fans are not interested in a deal.
Indeed, a number of the supporters have taken to social media to express their views on the transfer claim, and not too many are in favour of the attacker arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A selection of the Twitter reaction is available to view below:
Some Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to pile the praise on Matty Longstaff, after the youngster scored the only goal of the game against Manchester United on what was his debut for the club.
The 19-year-old – starting alongside his brother Sean in midfield – ran the show against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as the Magpies bounced back from their 5-0 loss to Leicester with a 1-0 win over United.
Longstaff – Matty, not Sean – had two shots, scoring with the one on target, while also recording one key pass against the Red Devils.
The teenager also recorded a tackle and two interceptions, while also hitting the bar with a fantastic swerving effort in the first-half from long range – it really was a dream debut for Longstaff.
Rightly so, the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been piling the praise on the Magpies academy graduate after the game.
Let’s take a look at some of the Twitter reaction…
Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have been left unimpressed by a report from CalcioMercato saying they are interested in Ajax winger David Neres.
The Italian media outlet says Spurs are monitoring the Brazilian attacker, rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, and there is no doubting his ability given he has scored 31 goals and provided a further 33 assists in 113 matches for the Eredivisie giants.
However, the north London outfit appear to have more pressing concerns at the moment from a defensive point of view, as shown by the seven goals they shipped at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League this week.

That is one of the major bugbears of the Tottenham supporters commenting on the reported interest in the South American, who would likely be fighting with the likes of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela for a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI if he arrived at the club in the near future.
While one individual asked “are we turning into Arsenal?”, in relation to the Gunners buying attacking players rather than sorting out their backline, another said “we need defensive players more”.

Tyrone Mings seemed to be quite pleased with how the team got on, as the Villans kept their second clean sheet of the season.
However, certain members of the squad felt disappointed that they couldn’t get more than a point against the Hammers.

It’s strange to see such differing views on Monday’s results from players within the same squad.

It’s also easy to see both sides of the split. West Ham are eighth in the league, but they also had a man sent off in the second half. Perhaps they should feel disappointed not to have won, but they will have much easier tests than Manuel Pellegrini’s side this campaign.
In today’s Newcastle United roundup, we take a look at what news has been doing the rounds for the Magpies. 16-year-old Luke Matheson has been linked with the club after scoring at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup, there is a fresh takeover bid from Peter Kenyon, and Rafael Benitez has named the best players he signed for the club.
Kenyon launches fresh takeover bid

Report: According to Sky Sports, Kenyon’s new American investment fund GACP Sports is trying to buy Newcastle for £300m which will be paid in installments over three years. A detailed 46-page brochure has been sent out to potential investors, explaining their plans for the club, states the report.
Verdict: No doubt this will be music to the ears of anyone who follows the Toon Army. For over a decade now, fans have been desperate to see the back of Mike Ashley, with the Sports Direct owner refusing to delve into the transfer market enough, and thus having played a huge role in the club being relegated twice during his reign.
Kenyon’s GACP Sports also owns French side Bordeaux, whilst the man himself has been chief executive of both Chelsea and Manchester United and clearly knows how to run a football club as a result.
As has been the case in previous bids from Kenyon, there needs to be a large sum which Ashley would fancy or it is unlikely he will sell the club. Indeed, in recent times Amanda Staveley’s PCP Partners, the Bin Zayed Group as well as Kenyon have all attempted to purchase the club, with Ashley turning down each offer.
It seems it is going to take a bid in excess of £350m, as Sky Sports reports, and Newcastle fans will be hoping and praying this comes sooner rather than later.
Benitez on his best signings for the club
Report: In a Q&A with The Athletic (as quoted by Shields Gazette), former Magpies boss Benitez revealed who were his best signings during his time at St James’ Park. The Spaniard was asked ‘who would you say was your best value signing at Newcastle (Fabian) Schar, (Florian) Lejeune, (Martin) Dubravka?’, although Benitez was quick to point out Solomon Rondon as a name he never forgot during his time in the North East.
He replied: “I agree the three of them are quite good signings for the money we paid. Also I would add Rondon was good value as a loan.”
Verdict: Dubravka has turned himself into one of the better goalkeepers in the Premier League over the last few years, keeping 17 clean sheets and making 139 saves in 56 appearances. Although the Slovakian has conceded 67 times, only five of them have come as ‘errors leading to a goal’, according to official statistics of the Premier League.
Schar is continuing to prove his importance for the club this season, averaging a 7.16 performance rating and playing a huge role in Newcastle conceding eight goals in six games – only Crystal Palace boasts better in the bottom half.
As for Rondon, he has linked up once again with Benitez, joining him at Dalian Yifang in China. During his time at Newcastle, however, the Venezuelan finished as the second top scorer for the club, bagging 11 goals and seven assists in 31 Premier League appearances.
Lejeune is currently out injured, but the Frenchman did average a 7.05 performance rating with the Magpies in his first season under Benitez.
Bruce keeping tabs on Matheson
Report: According to the Chronicle Live, Newcastle have been scouting the Rochdale teenager even before his heroics against Manchester United. It is reported that the Magpies have kept tabs on the defender ever since he made his first-team debut in the Checkatrade Trophy last year.
Verdict: 16-year-old Matheson has jumped into the limelight after scoring the equaliser in the Dale’s Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford. The right-back has been involved heavily for the League One side so far, playing all three of the EFL Cup games until Rochdale were knocked out. Matheson has also played twice in the league for his boyhood club this season and has even stepped out for the England U17’s on one occasion.
It is always wise to keep tabs on the younger guys around because clubs can never know what youth teams are prizing away the best young talent in the country – sometimes it is not always the Premier League teams who acquire the best young products from around England.
If Newcastle were to sign Matheson, it would be highly doubtful he would see first-team action more than a handful of times in a year. Nevertheless, if his performance at Old Trafford is anything to go by, it is a good idea to keep an eye on his progress.
Woakes took two of the four wickets that fell in India A’s second innings

Watch – Shubman Gill’s India hit the nets ahead of England Tests
Half-centuries from KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran following Khaleel Ahmed’s four-wicket haul helped India A pull ahead against England Lions on the third day of the second unofficial Test. India A ended the penultimate day in Northampton with a lead of 184. For Lions, Woakes picked up two of the four wickets that fell.In what could be a concern for England ahead of the five-Test series against India starting June 20, fast bowler Josh Tongue hobbled off after bowling just four overs for 27 runs in the second innings. The nature and extent of his injury is yet to be determined. He is part of the England squad for the first Test.Having claimed a first-innings lead of 21 runs, India A came out with an intent to produce a result from the game. While Yashasvi Jaiswal’s tentativeness cost him – he nicked one behind off George Hill – Rahul and Abhimanyu were fluent during their partnership. Rahul, in particular, picked lengths early, and was severe on Tongue, whenever he offered width. The back-foot punch through backward point was one of the highlights of his knock in which he got to fifty off 61 balls. He fell for 51 when Eddie Jack got one to rear up at him from a slightly back of a length, which Rahul miscued to deep mid-on.Abhimanyu and Karun Nair then amplified India’s intent with a 38-run partnership off 36 balls. Abhimanyu took a liking to Jack, scoring 23 off 24 balls from him with four fours. He also employed the sweep to good effect against the offspin of Farhan Ahmed as he notched up his half-century off 68 balls. But he couldn’t see off Chris Woakes’ second spell, nicking one to slip for 80 off 92 balls. While the second half of the day belonged to India A batters, the morning was Khaleel’s. Jordan Cox looked to stamp his authority early in the day with a heave over midwicket but Khaleel got one to jump from a length, which the set batter only nicked behind. A few overs later, Khaleel had Lions captain James Rew caught at first slip before cleaning up Hill with a corker of a yorker for a first-ball duck. Woakes did not last long as Lions lost 4 for 10 in under six overs. But the lower order led by Farhan, Tongue and Jack frustrated India A as the last two wickets held fort for more than 150 balls.Rahul dropping Farhan three overs after lunch, off Nitish Kumar Reddy, did not help India A’s cause. Rahul made amends after Reddy induced the outside edge of Farhan once again in his next over. By the time Anshul Kamboj dismissed Jack, the last batter, Lions had managed to reduce the first-innings deficit to 21. There were two stoppages – for about 20 minutes each – in the second and third session that saw play go till about 7:20pm local time.

Jemimah Rodrigues scored her second ODI century•SLC
India posted their highest score against South Africa – 337 for 9 – and their fifth-highest total in all ODIs to seal their spot in the Sri Lanka Tri-Series final on Sunday, where they will play the hosts. In response, South Africa batted bravely to score their second-highest total batting second, but were still knocked out of the tournament. That means South Africa’s match on Friday against Sri Lanka will be a dead rubber. But more concerning for South Africa is that they have won only one of their last ten ODIs. Exactly the opposite statistic applies to India, who have lost only one of their last ten games, and controlled proceedings for almost all of their match against South Africa on Wednesday, even if the margin victory suggests otherwise.Jemimah Rodrigues scored her second ODI century, and the third-fastest for India in women’s ODIs, off 89 balls, to anchor their batting effort. After the loss of three wickets in the powerplay, Rodrigues shared an 88-run stand with Smriti Mandhana, and then a 122-run partnership with Deepti Sharma, which allowed India to score the most number of runs after the fall of the third wicket in an ODI innings.Rodrigues’ innings epitomised India’s dominance, with the right balance of timing and aggression. She drove, swept and reverse swept well against a South Africa attack that seemed out of bite and ideas. They were without regular captain Laura Wolvaardt, who was ruled out of the game with illness, and stand-in skipper Chloe Tryon used eight bowlers, including herself. Only Tryon and Sune Luus, who bowled three overs, conceded at less than six runs an over, while premier left-arm spinner Nonkululekho Mlaba gave away 71 runs in only eight overs.South Africa had moments in charge, and started well with the ball when Nadine de Klerk had Pratika Rawal caught at backward point. While Rawal reached out for a full ball, Masabata Klaas bowled Harleen Deol with a delivery that jagged back in and beat her defence. India were 18 for 2 in the third over but did not struggle to rebuild.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Boundary balls came once – sometimes more – an over as de Klerk and Klaas were inconsistent with their lengths. Annerie Dercksen, at first change, also started off short and wide but rushed Harmanpreet Kaur into a pull, and had the Indian captain caught at midwicket.Having created the opportunity to put pressure on India, South Africa didn’t take advantage of it. Though they cut off boundaries for the next three overs, Mlaba’s introduction changed that. Rodrigues drove her second ball for four, and then took two boundaries off her next over as Mlaba struggled with a line down leg. By the 15th over, India were scoring at a run a ball. They were pulled back, but Rodrigues and Mandhana were largely untroubled by a slew of spinners until Mandhana tried to hit Tryon over midwicket and handed de Klerk a catch. By then, Rodrigues had fifty, and was well set. Deepti took over the attacking role, and took advantage of short deliveries from debutant Miane Smit, while Rodrigues worked her way through the 60s and 70s.On 81, she shuffled across her stumps to hit Nondumiso Shangase over cover, and that was the signal that she was looking to chang gears. It took just nine more balls for Rodrigues to get her century, with a single off Mlaba, which prompted an air kiss and a bat-guitar celebration. Rodrigues scored 23 more runs off the next 12 balls she faced but was dismissed the ball after Deepti got to fifty, when she miscued Klaas to Luus at point.Deepti Sharma scored 93 with the bat, and bagged a wicket with the ball•SLC
India still had 7.2 overs left to bat, and a good platform to build on. Deepti took it on herself to press forward, and scored 43 runs off the next 22 balls, and was especially severe on de Klerk’s slower balls. Deepti hit her over her head for two sixes, and was on track to bring up a stunning century but was caught at long-on off the penultimate ball of the innings before India finished with 337.South Africa’s task was always going to be tough, after they were asked to score 63 more runs than their previous-highest successful chase of 275. At least that was against India, and one of the top performers then, Lara Goodall, was here too. Goodall was promoted to open the batting in Wolvaardt’s absence but nicked off in the second over to give Amanjot Kaur a wicket in her first over of the series.Tazmin Brits and Smit put on 63 for the second wicket but struggled to score quickly. Brits was on 26 off 41 balls when she pulled Amanjot to Rodrigues at midwicket. Four overs later, Smit was bowled by Deepti while looking to sweep, and pressure built on South Africa. The required run rate was above eight runs an over from the 20th over, and it only kept climbing further.Dercksen and Shangase tried to get things on track with a 70-run stand in 66 balls. Shangase was on 36 off 35 balls when she tried to hit part-time spinner Rawal over long-on but was caught on the boundary. Sinalo Jafta was promoted to No. 6 and came out swinging, but India did not seem to think that was much of a threat.Nondumiso Shangase and Annerie Dercksen added 70 runs for the fifth wicket•Getty Images
In the 32nd over, Mandhana, who has only bowled three times in 101 ODIs for a total of four overs, was given the ball. Her first over went for eight runs, but she bowled one more over before giving way to Sree Charani, who had Jafta lbw with the first ball of her third spell. South Africa were 188 for 5, and needed 150 runs from the last 15 overs.Dercksen gave them hope when she brought up a second successive half-century, and beat her previous career-best of 61 by 20 runs. But she became the third South African, after Brits and Karabo Meso in previous matches, to struggle with the conditions. Dercksen received treatment on her lower back twice, forcing breaks in play. After the second treatment, Dercksen was bowled by Amanjot, and South Africa’s best partnership – 72 off 60 balls between Dercksen and Tryon – was broken. Tryon went to score her 12th ODI fifty, and eventually finished with a strike rate of 155.81 in her knock of 67.South Africa needed 39 runs off the last two overs when the umpires took players off the field for bad light, with the score on 299 for 6. The DLS par for South Africa at that stage was 314. Tryon and de Klerk appeared aggrieved with the decision to come off but were surprised to hear 15 minutes later that the match would restart. They scored 12 runs off the penultimate over, and were left needing 27 to win off the last. Tryon was bowled off the first ball of the final over, and South Africa ended 23 runs short.
West Ham United fans are desperate for Mark Noble to start when they take on Watford at Vicarage Road this weekend.
The Hammers captain is fit to play, the club have confirmed, as they look to record their first Premier League win of the season.
A 5-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester City at the London Stadium on the opening weekend of the season was followed by a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.
Noble was ruled out of both games with a calf injury but he is now fit to play and could take his place in the Irons’ midfield this weekend.

Dewmi Vihanga’s five-for and Chamari Athapaththu’s half-century went in vain for Sri Lanka
Firdose Moonda09-May-2025Annerie Dercksen’s maiden ODI century – which came off the back of two successive 50-plus scores and is also the fastest by a South African in the format – headlined South Africa’s consolation win at the women’s tri-series in Colombo. With South Africa out of contention for Sunday’s final, they put together their most complete performance of the competition and posted their fifth highest score in all ODIs thanks to contributions from the lower order, which ultimately won them the game.Dercksen arrived at the crease with South Africa on 85 for 5 as offspinner Dewmi Vihanga ripped through their top and middle-order. She consolidated with Nondumiso Shangase before sharing a 112-run seventh-wicket stand off 88 balls with Chloe Tryon, a seventh-wicket record for South Africa, to put them in sight of a big score. Tryon smashed 74 off 51 balls and was part of a 66-run stand off 30 balls with Nadine de Klerk which pushed South Africa over 300 and asked Sri Lanka to complete their highest successful chase.Related

Sri Lanka have already done that once before against South Africa – when they also chased down a 300-plus total – and were in a good position on 160 for 3 in the 30th over. But Ayabonga Khaka’s double-strike, which included the dismissal of Chamari Athapaththu for 52, and a career-best 5 for 34 for Tryon, including a hat-trick, ended their chances of another historic win.Instead, the records were all Dercksen’s after she became only the second batter to score a hundred at No.7 or lower in women’s ODIs and capped off a breakthrough series as a batter.Dercksen scored her first half-century just two matches ago, at this tournament, and finished as the leading run-scorer from the league stage. Her maturity and aggression rescued South Africa after a start which turned in the wrong direction and should see her bat higher up the order in future.Dewmi Vihanga picked up a five-for•SLC
Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put on 68 for the first-wicket and were both batting well when Vihanga first struck. She drew Brits forward and took the edge and Hasini Perera took a good, low catch at slip to give Sri Lanka their first. In her next over, Vihanga beat Wolvaardt’s inside-edge and bowled her and in the over after that, had Miane Smit caught slog-sweeping at midwicket.Just when Vihanga may have thought things couldn’t go better, she plucked two more in her next over: Lara Goodall caught at slip and Sinalo Jafta, bowled while giving the charge. Vihanga, at 19 years old and playing in her third ODI, had her first five-for and is the second-highest wicket-taker of the series behind Sneh Rana.Sri Lanka had the opportunity to run through South Africa from there but Dercksen stood in their way. She hit the third ball she faced over Vihanga’s head for four and there was no looking back. Dercksen favoured the area down the ground, where three of her five sixes were scored, including the one that took her to the century.Dercksen’s innings was laced with cuts and pulls off the back foot and, unusually for her, a selection of sweeps including a reverse off Athapaththu. She dominated the partnership with Tryon, and scored 77 of the 112 runs they put on and it was only when she was dismissed, in the 44th over, that Tryon took over. She charged Sugandika Kumari and hit her for six, moved across the crease to send Manudia Nanayakkara over midwicket and then took three sixes off Athapaththu before missing one and being stumped. De Klerk finished unbeaten on 32 off 19 balls and South Africa would have been comfortable with the target they set Sri Lanka, who began well in pursuit.Chloe Tryon scored a half-century and took a five-for, which included a hat-trick•SLC
The opening pair of Hasini Perera and Vishmi Gunaratne put on 52 and it was Tryon’s introduction that separated them. Her second delivery was tossed up, Perera tried to drive and spooned a catch to Dercksen at cover. Four overs later. Tryon switched to around the wicket and had Gunaratne caught at backward point.Athapaththu was in at No. 4 and gave Tryon a taste of her own medicine when she took 10 runs off her fourth over, including her first six.Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarickrama’s third-wicket partnership grew to 52 and and they took Sri Lanka to the halfway stage on 124 for 2 but debutant legspinner Seshnie Naidu ended their stand. Samarawickrama tried to hit the first ball of Naidu’s fourth over out of the ground but was caught at mid-off.Athapaththu brought up a 17th career half-century and kept Sri Lanka in the hunt but Khaka was brought back at a crucial time. In the 30th over, with Sri Lanka needing 156 runs to win, Khaka returned and Athapaththu sliced her to cover to all but end Sri Lanka’s hopes. In her next over, Khaka bowled Nilakshika Silva with the slower ball.Sri Lanka continued to bat proactively even as the asking rate climbed and then they were snubbed out in the 42nd over, when Tryon took three in three. She had de Klerk to thank for the first after she ran in from deep backward square and took a diving catch to remove Vihanga. Off the next ball, Sugandika Kumari was caught at backward point and then Malki Madara got a faint edge to Jafta to complete Tryon’s hat-trick.Sri Lanka were bowled out for 239 in the 43rd over and lost by 76 runs.
Or is it the other way around, and they are not good enough at this stage to be in demand?

Knight: ‘Next thing for Jofra Archer is to evolve’
And then there were ten. IPL 2025, at this stage, has just ten players from England. There were 12, but Harry Brook and Brydon Carse (injury) have withdrawn. Feels different from previous years, doesn’t it? So, has the England players’ attitude towards the IPL changed? Are they not good enough anymore, and the IPL franchises are just not interested in them? Is it something else?”Rob Key, who is in charge back at the ECB, has basically tried to – and he’s fairly right – encouraged his players to play as much for England [as possible],” Nick Knight, the former England opener, said on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut. “They’ve got a five-Test series against India. They’ve got an Ashes to follow. They’ve got multi-format players, like Harry Brook and Mark Wood – they’re pretty well looked-after now. And they’re going to have to be looked after.”There’s a bit of that influence. So they perhaps don’t need to travel and play in all these leagues around the world. There are other leagues popping up as well. If you’re not going to get the full price [at the IPL auctions] that perhaps you might want to get, you might want to play in another league. So there are a number of these sort of factors flying around for some of these players.”Related

The ten players from England that are a part of IPL 2025 are Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Phil Salt and Reece Topley. Brook and Carse have opted out. Ben Duckett, it’s understood, was contacted by Delhi Capitals (DC) to be Brook’s replacement, but he chose to stay away.Compare this to IPL 2024, when there were 18 players from England divided among the ten teams. Some of them withdrew at various stages of the IPL, but that’s a significantly higher number than now.ESPNcricinfo’s Matt Roller suggested that some of the England players’ stocks have dwindled in recent years, possibly a reflection of their failures at ICC white-ball events of late. When the last mega auction was held, before IPL 2022, England were the defending 50-over World Cup winners and then won the T20 World Cup in 2022. They were in big demand.”Perhaps the stock of some of these players is not quite as high because of the ICC trophies, and the way some of these competitions globally have been going,” Knight said, agreeing to the point. “You know, you look at Sam Curran. Go back a couple of T20 [World Cups] back in Australia, he was the Player of the Tournament.3:45
Has England’s IPL love affair changed?
“And he goes into the IPL auction, gets an absolute full whack. So there are a number of factors that are combining to make a few players less [in demand] than you’d expect.”A bit of a chicken-and-egg situation, isn’t it? Did the England players get better at T20s by playing in the IPL, or did they come into the IPL because they were that good? And how does it work now?”A lot of people have benefitted from playing in the IPL, because a lot of them got better playing against spin, and also wickets that were slow,” Ambati Rayudu said. “We have seen the England side in India [for a white-ball series in January and February this year]. Somehow, they are just playing one-dimensional cricket, especially in the middle overs, and especially against spin. To go hard against spin, you also need skill. So where do you develop that? You develop that in the subcontinent, or on wickets such as these. So… it’s quite a Catch-22 situation.”
