Everton transfer news on Digne

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has emerged on Lucas Digne.

As per Goal, the Goodison Park faithful are now offering the France international to various teams ahead of the January transfer window, with Chelsea thought to be one of those clubs interested in his signature.

They are trying to convince the Merseyside club to loan Digne to them until the end of the season, following the news of Ben Chilwell’s ACL injury.

After a reported row with Rafa Benitez, Digne has now missed the Toffees’ last three matches in the Premier League, and so speculation over his future remains, while Chilwell will be out for the remainder of the season due to surgery required on his knee.

However, given that Digne still remains the Toffees’ only senior left-back in the squad, it would seem silly to loan him out next month, especially without at least a couple of replacements lined up.

Derby handed Teden Mengi transfer boost

Derby County have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Teden Mengi back to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that Wayne Rooney’s side appear to be on course to land the Manchester United centre-back on another loan deal in the current transfer window, with the Premier League runners-up content to send the 19-year-old back to the Championship side after they secured survival on the final day of the season.

Rooney will be buzzing

With Derby remaining under a transfer embargo due to Mel Morris’ ongoing search to find a buyer for the club, something that limits the Rams’ transfer activity to loans and free transfers, as well as any potential incomings having to be paid a sensible wage, the news that Mengi looks set to make a return to Pride Park this summer is sure to have Rooney buzzing.

Indeed, over his nine Championship appearances while on loan at the club last season, the £1.35m-rated defender turned in a number of impressive performances in what were extremely challenging circumstances.

In the league, the 19-year-old helped his side keep a total of one clean sheet, while also making an average of 1.1 interceptions, one tackle, 2.4 clearances and winning 3.8 duels per game, with these metrics culminating in the youngster earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.67.

As such, with Rooney looking to build a side in the transfer window that is capable of mounting a push towards the top half of the second tier table next season, the potential return of a player whom the 35-year-old manager claimed is a “fantastic” centre-back will give the former England captain at least one reason to be cheerful in the coming months, particularly when factoring the mess that his side remain in away from the pitch.

Leeds interested in Sheffield United’s Kyron Gordon

Leeds could take a big step towards building for the future by signing Sheffield United starlet Kyron Gordon.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut at Bramall Lane but is already plying his trade for the club’s under-23s, and it now appears that clubs across the Premier League have taken notice.

According to the Daily Mail, both Marcelo Bielsa’s side and Manchester United have joined the race to sign Gordon this summer, with Merseyside duo Everton and Liverpool also said to be in the running.

The report claimed that “all four of the Premier League admirers are constantly assessing talented prospects such as Gordon with the aim to add depth to their youth ranks and may consider a move in the summer amid an expected re-shaping of the Blades.”

Securing Leeds’ future

In the 18-year-old, Leeds would be making yet another exciting addition to their academy following the likes of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood, who have also made the switch in recent seasons.

Given his age, there will be no expectation that the Blades youngster will be in the first team at Elland Road any time soon, but it could ensure that the Whites’ future at the back remains bright.

Bielsa already has one young starlet in Charlie Cresswell progressing through the ranks, and signing Gordon to partner him in the youth teams could help form a potential duo to eventually shine at Premier League level.

That partnership could be developed early and would see them gain an understanding of each others’ strengths and weaknesses ahead of the real test of senior football in the top flight, if all goes to plan.

Meanwhile, Leeds could finally wave goodbye to this liability…

Liverpool ‘will end up’ signing Darwin Nunez

Liverpool reportedly have a first agreement to sign Benfica’s Uruguayan striker, Darwin Nunez.

What’s the word?

According to the latest report from Journalist Brahian Kuchman: “There would be a first agreement for Darwin Nunez to be a new English Liverpool player.”

Taking to his Twitter page, Kuchman also stated: “Jurgen Klopp has grown tired of praising the Uruguayan to such an extent that he will end up hiring him.”

Klopp’s final straw

If the latest reports are anything to go by, Klopp will most certainly have the 22-year-old goal machine at his disposal next season.

Described as a “proper talent” by freelance football writer Amos Murphy on Twitter and as a “diamond” by Steve McManaman, Nunez is having the season of his life in Liga Portugal this year.

His both legs of their Champions League showdown earlier this month.

Of course, Klopp will have subtle confidence about picking up players from Liga Portugal, with his recent coup of former Porto star Luis Diaz demonstrating the amount of value that is scattered all over Portugal.

25-year-old Diaz has transitioned seamlessly into English football, with his five goal returns from nine appearances serving as great evidence of that.

The 54-year-old Liverpool boss Klopp will also be aware of the potential partnership that could blossom between Diaz and Nunez. With the trio of Mane, Salah and Firmino all in the final year of their contracts, Liverpool may be thinking about the future.

Those at Anfield will be urging the club to sign the out-and-out striker who possesses limitless potential at just 22-years-old, though it will not be cheap.

Whilst the Anfield side may reportedly have a “first agreement” to sign the 6 foot 2 goal-machine, he is valued at a mighty £83m by some sources.

Tottenham dealt potential Kane blow

According to a report by Spanish news outlet Sport, as relayed and translated by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur star striker is ‘committed to leaving’ north London this summer as Manchester City eye a successor for club legend Sergio Aguero – coming as a potential blow for Jose Mourinho and Spurs.

Kane, who has been Tottenham’s most crucial asset this season, with the Englishman putting in an enormous contribution for the Lilywhites as they quest to mount a possible end of season top four challenge, is committed to a summer exit according to Sport.

Tottenham dealt potential Kane blow

The 27-year-old has bagged a brilliant 16 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League alone for Spurs this season, averaging a threatening 3.8 shots per 90 in that time under Mourinho.

Indeed, Spurs are heavily reliant on their star target man, but this report from Spain says he is now committed to leaving north London as Man City consider a move.

The Sky Blues are apparently set to ‘bet heavily’ on Borussia Dortmund attacker Erling Haaland in the next transfer window, but both Kane and Romelu Lukaku are also on the shortlist for Pep Guardiola.

Transfer Tavern take

Mourinho will be hoping Kane doesn’t opt to exit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he seeks to bring silverware to the club for the first time since 2008, but it seems another summer of constant rumours is on the horizon.

Alasdair Gold recently indicated that chairman Daniel Levy will have a ‘huge’ decision to make in regards to Kane being sold off to fund summer additions, especially given the club’s current financial plight due to coronavirus.

Real Madrid eye up Leeds star Phillips

Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is reportedly being watched closely by Real Madrid, following a superb start to his Euro 2020 campaign with England.

The Lowdown: Phillips excels for England

The 25-year-old started for the Three Lions in their opener against Croatia on Sunday afternoon, producing a Man of the Match performance and providing the assist for Raheem Sterling’s winning goal.

It was the type of display that Leeds fans have become accustomed to, but it was pleasing to see him shine on the big stage, in front of a huge worldwide audience.

The Latest: Real Madrid linked with shock move

Phillips’ brilliance for England seemingly hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Defensa Central claiming that European giants Madrid are reportedly keeping an eye on him as they look for summer recruits.

Carlo Ancelotti has recently taken charge at the Santiago Bernabeu and it may be that he was an admirer of the midfielder during his time at Everton in the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Unlikely to happen

It sums up Phillips’ quality that a team of Madrid’s stature are reportedly eyeing him up, having been such an influential player for Leeds during a glorious period in their history.

In truth, it is hard to see the La Liga side actually signing him – they are more known for signing world-renowned ‘Galacticos’ – so Marcelo Bielsa is unlikely to be losing any sleep.

That being said, should Phillips continue to improve as a player, it could be increasingly difficult for the Whites to keep hold of him for the long-term future.

In other news, a former Leeds man has failed to rule out one current Whites player leaving this summer. Find out who it is here.

Journalist provides key Neuhaus update

Liverpool will make a ‘concrete offer’ for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus this summer, according to journalist Florian Plettenburg.

The Lowdown: Neuhaus links continue

The Reds could be expected to make more signings in the coming months after their difficult campaign, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate already arriving from RB Leipzig.

One player who has been continually linked with a move to Liverpool is Neuhaus, who is currently on Euro 2020 with Germany.

The 24-year-old featured in 33 of Monchengladbach’s 38 Bundesliga matches last season, proving to be a key man in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Journalist provides update

Plettenburg, journalist and podcaster for SPORT1, has now given a fresh update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Neuhaus, taking to Twitter to say:

“Update #Neuhaus (due to many inquiries): #LFC is definitely a highly interesting option for the player. A concrete offer for him is expected. It’s also up to Klopp. However, a decision on his future will be made after the Euros.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/the-latest-liverpool-transfer-news-copy-2/” title=”The latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Wijnaldum’s replacement?

With Gini Wijnaldum leaving Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain, a huge void is going to left in the Reds’ midfield, given the Dutchman’s influence there.

It could be that the £31.5million-rated Neuhaus is the man to solve that issue, thriving in a similar manner to Wijnaldum, even if they aren’t too similar, in terms of playing style.

The German averaged three tackles per game in the Champions League in 2020/21, showing how effective he can be off the ball, but also chipped in with six goals and five assists in the league – end product was something Wijnaldum largely lacked, managing just two league goals and zero assists last term.

Neuhaus would, therefore, bring both attacking guile and defensive work-rate to Liverpool’s team, making up for the loss of Wijnaldum in the process.

Howey can’t see Rodgers at Man City

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 99 appearances for Manchester City, believes Brendan Rodgers would not be a manager City would look at as a Pep Guardiola replacement.

Rodgers has proven his ability at every club he’s managed. He turned Swansea from a Championship side into Premier League regulars before taking Liverpool close to the title and winning seven trophies in two and a half years at Celtic.

However, it’s his current job at Leicester City which is getting rave reviews because of his he’s made them regular top four contenders as well as bringing in great players such as Youri Tielemans, Anthony Castagne and Wesley Fofana.

Speaking on how Rodgers would not be someone the champions to be would look to appoint, Howey told FFC:

“It all depends on what the hierarchy at Manchester City wants to do, but probably not for me.

“It isn’t because he’s not a very good manager because he is, and he has had success everywhere he has been.”

The 48-year-old has been tipped to be one of the candidates to succeed Guardiola at the Etihad when he eventually does depart.

Leicester have enjoyed a great season domestically as they find themselves in the top four of the Premier League as well as in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Fry says Lampard would succeed at Palace

Peterborough Director of Football Barry Fry has exclusively told Football FanCast that Frank Lampard’s history of dealing with younger players would make him an ideal fit for Crystal Palace.

Lampard has been a free agent since his sacking from Chelsea back in January and has been strongly linked to replace his former England manager Roy Hodgson, whose deal at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season.

Whilst his tenure at Stamford Bridge was underwhelming, he turned both Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham into England internationals, whilst he brought Billy Gilmour through the Chelsea Academy.

Palace have several experienced faces at the club, with many expected to be moved on, but the likes of Tyrick Mitchell, Nathan Ferguson and Eberechi Eze are the future of the club, which could make for a perfect match for Lampard.

Other young names like Patrick Vieira, Eddie Howe and Thierry Henry have also been mentioned as potential Palace managers, although Lampard is in pole position should Hodgson decide to retire.

And Fry told Football FanCast that he has no doubts the 42-year-old would do well at Palace:

“I think wherever he went, Frank, he would be a success – he’s just got that way about him.

“I can understand Steve Parish going for him because he’s a young manager that gets the best out of young players, and he’s had a year of not spending any money in the window and did very well.

“But I don’t think Parish and the American owners will have the money and say to Frank, ‘here’s £200m, improve the team’. He will have to do it by himself and use his judgment and knowledge of younger players, but he would improve Palace and would improve individual players that are young.”

Liverpool enter Noni Madueke race

Liverpool have reportedly shown an interest in PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his forward line.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds are one of a number of clubs from across the continent interested in securing the highly-rated 19-year-old’s services this summer.

The report claims that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Leicester City were also amongst the 10 sides to send scouts to watch him in PSV’s recent defeat to Benfica.

With competition expected to be fierce for Madueke’s signature, Liverpool’s director of football Michael Edwards may have to move quickly to snap up the talented teenager ahead of his other potential suitors.

Liverpool fans will be buzzing

The England Under-21 international joined the Philips Stadion outfit back in 2017 after being released by boyhood club Spurs at just 16 and has gone on to establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents during his time in Dutch football.

In 32 appearances for Roger Schmidt’s side in all competitions last season, the skilful winger bagged nine goals and provided a further eight assists for his teammates, showcasing his truly top-class potential.

His outstanding displays earned praise from several plaudits, including former PSV ace Tommie van de Leegte: “He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions,” said Van de Leegte (via Goal).

And he’s starting the current campaign in an emphatic fashion, contributing to seven goals in just nine outings in all competitions.

However, prising him away from the Philips Stadion may be a tricky task for Edwards, after Schmidt claimed that the talented teenager would be staying put this summer in a recent interview.

Speaking to ESPN (via Football.London), he said: “I’m not afraid [of Madueke leaving], why should I be? He will one day leave PSV if he continues to develop like he is now.

“I’m not afraid it will happen now. We can’t sell key players anymore. We’ve already done that with Donyell Malen, Denzel Dumfries and Pablo Rosario, so we can’t lose any more.

“And PSV is also a fantastic club for Noni to develop. He is very young, he can play a lot here, score goals and cheer with the team. I think he feels very good here.”

Originally, a price tag of around £34m was believed to have been placed on PSV’s prized asset, but following their exit from the Champions League in the play-off round, that valuation is thought to have been halved.

Therefore, Liverpool fans will surely be buzzing at the prospect of securing Madueke’s services. With Xherdan Shaqiri finalising his move to Lyon, Klopp has the room in his squad and should have sufficient room in his budget to bring the youngster to Anfield, thus significantly strengthening his attacking options.
