ÁRBITRO ENTRA ‘NO JOGO’ DO DEL VALLE

ARRASCAETA, O ‘SUMIDO’, APARECE NO ÚLTIMO LANCE!

'Just a rough patch' – Thakur defends Rahane and Iyer after latest failures

“I love to play in tough situations and tough conditions,” Thakur says after top-scoring in Mumbai’s first innings in the Ranji Trophy final

Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer might have failed to snap their lean runs with the bat in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy final for Mumbai, but Shardul Thakur has placed his trust in them to return to form.Rahane and Iyer scored 7 apiece as Mumbai scored 224 at Wankhede Stadium, with Thakur the top-scorer with 75. Thakur then picked up the first Vidarbha wicket before Dhawal Kulkarni picked up two more to leave Vidarbha at a precarious 31 for 3.”Ajinkya is not scoring runs throughout the season. He is not in the greatest of the forms. We cannot blame him as it is just a phase for him where he is not getting runs,” Thakur said after the day’s play. “It’s just a rough patch for them. That’s what I would say [about] Shreyas [and] Ajinkya. These guys have been absolute match-winners for Mumbai and India.Related

“Right now, it’s not their time; it’s time to support them rather than criticising them because it’s easy to criticise.”Rahane has so far made just 141 runs in eight Ranji matches at an average of 12.81 with a solitary fifty. Iyer has not been a regular for Mumbai this season, but his return to the domestic circuit has been far from impressive – 58 runs from three games at an average of 19.33 with a highest of 48.”Ajinkya has not scored runs but his attitude on the fielding is top notch,” Thakur said. “A lot of youngsters coming from Under-23 and Under-19 cricket in Mumbai don’t have the attitude that he has. You see him in the slips, even if he is fielded for 80 overs, he will sprint [to] save four runs.”Shreyas moves around the field like a tiger. He absolutely gives everything that he has on the field. Both of them are role models when they are in the dressing room.”While defending the senior pros, Thakur expressed his displeasure at some of the younger batters not grabbing their opportunities in a match as significant as the Ranji final.”The other batters… we collectively felt that they should have shown a better approach,” he said. “Starting from Bhupen Lalwani, because he survived the first two or three balls in that over [from Yash Thakur, in which he was dismissed] and still chasing that wide one on the fourth delivery, is not on.” Lalwani scored 37, while Prithvi Shaw scored 46, but Musheer Khan (6) and Hardik Tamore (5) failed.Dhawal Kulkarni, playing his last game, brought Mumbai back into the contest after a middling batting effort•PTI

“They have to learn quickly because Mumbai dressing room is not about [your] own self. When you play here, you play for the team. You have to keep your individual scores, your own game aside,” Thakur said. “When you score 20-25 or 30 runs, the next runs are for the team. They have to learn about it.”We just need to regroup as a batting unit [in the second innings]. There are going to be tough days as a batting unit. Probably, we will just have a meeting and decide collectively how are you going to put a big score on the board from the first three or four wickets.”On his own innings – Thakur walked out at 111 for 6 and was the last man out – he said, “I love to play in tough situations and tough conditions. The kind of life that I have lived travelling far from Palghar to Mumbai with the kit bag on the train, you know it was not easy. That has toughened me up.”About Kulkarni, who will retire after the final, Thakur said it was emotional to see his old mate turning out for Mumbai for the last time.”Today morning it was confirmed that he is playing. It was going to be his last game. It was an extremely emotional moment for him,” Thakur said. “It’s an emotional moment for me also because I have watched him since childhood. When I did not have money to buy shoes, he gave me a few pairs of shoes.”

Jake Libby defies the wickets clatter to set Worcestershire on course

Term has ended at Oakham and its various buildings are now rented out to summer schools. One of the results of this enterprise is that every so often crocodiles of overseas students pass behind the bowler’s arm, unaware they are delaying a game. Of course, they may not realise a game is taking place. Perhaps they think this constant to-and-froing of men in white clothes is England’s counterpart to the Japanese tea ceremony; perhaps they are right. Patience, acceptance and meditation certainly have something to do with it and at least two of those virtues are a constant presence in the batting of Jake Libby, a player who has done as much as anyone to make a Worcestershire victory the heaviest of probabilities at some stage tomorrow morningLibby is one of those county cricketers who knows his game intimately, exploits his strengths carefully and rarely lets his team down. His 67 off 114 balls is the highest innings of this match so far and you might get the Nicaraguan national debt on that remaining the case. It was full of the controlled edges and stock-in-trade opener’s nudges that have enabled Libby to average nearly fifty in his 41 first-class games for Worcestershire since his move from Nottinghamshire. More significantly in the context of this vital match at Doncaster Close, it helped his side build on a 68-run first-innings lead and challenge Leicestershire to score 238 to win. That was already difficult enough before Josh Tongue arrived from Old Trafford to play in place of Adam Finch for the last three days of this game. Charging in from the Allotments End when Leicestershire had already lost Louis Kimber and Rishi Patel to the new ball, Tongue had limited impact in his opening spell. But after tea, he removed Peter Handscomb’s off stump and had Wiaan Mulder caught behind for a second-ball duck. Those dismissals left Leicestershire on 53 for 5 and their tumbrils were rattling. Later in the evening session, Dillon Pennington had both Lewis Hill and Tom Scriven caught behind in the same over and the tricoteuses’ needles clacked in the Close. Only the decision of the umpires to take the players off for bad light seemed to spare Leicestershire Madame Guillotine. But then neither of the officials had their troubles to seek today and they probably welcomed the early closure as wellMaybe we all did. Days on which 18 and 19 wickets fall rarely lack incident and it was probably difficult for even the most attentive spectator to isolate individual innings. At lunch, for example Worcestershire were 81 for 3, which they probably thought a reasonable return on a pitch which was only drying out properly on this second day. Chris Wright had taken the wickets of Gareth Roderick and Azhar Ali with the new ball and Matt Salisbury had removed Jack Haynes, strangled down the leg side, a fate which the departing batsman looked as though he wanted to inflict on Neil Bainton when he saw the umpire’s finger raised.Libby and Adam Hose added another 25 runs in the afternoon session before there was another clatter of wickets. Some were the result of good bowling: Libby was caught behind for 67 off one that nipped away from Mulder. Others were the consequence of brain-fazed batting: Joe Leach was run out attempting two runs only Frankel would have coasted and Josh Baker cut Matt Salisbury to Rishi Patel at deep point. Once again, Worcestershire supporters were grateful that their last-wicket pair, in this case Pennington and Tongue, could add 24 runs for the last wicket, for far too many cricketers have based their shot selection on what they feared the pitch would do rather than its actual performance.Indeed, rather too much criticism has been vented on this Oakham wicket and indirectly on the head groundsman, Richard Dexter. True, the surface was very difficult on the first day, largely because it had been under cover for most of the previous five to protect it from the rain. However, when the sun got to work on it this morning, it played a little more easily and a few dismissals were caused as much by suspicion as reality. That was what made Libby’s innings such a fine effort although his strokes might not have brought any comfort to Benno and Stench. Two of Leicestershire’s most loyal supporters, and particularly vocal on T20 nights at Grace Road, the pair established a base camp suitably close to the Social Science building on the first day of this game. From that vantage point, they saw Worcestershire subside quite slowly, which will have pleased them, and then Leicestershire collapse like disappointed divas on an awards evening, which will have brought them no such delight. Today’s cricket followed a similar pattern so maybe it was propitious that their banner was missing as the wickets tumbled, the batters grumbled and the uncomprehending crocodiles approached the sightscreen.

– Torcedor sabe do valor do nosso grupo inteiro. A gente colocou, a gente precisa tirar.

James Rew demands spotlight as James Anderson injury gives rise to noises off

England seamer absent due to groin issue as Somerset produce battling display

Paul Edwards12-May-2023Lancashire 72 for 2 trail Somerset 361 (Rew 105, Henry 50*, Mitchell 3-32, Williams 3-71) by 289 runsThis is an Australian summer and therefore one of those times when many cricket lovers see other games through the prism of a five-match battle that is yet to be fought. At Cardiff, Marnus Labuschagne tries to help Glamorgan complete their victory against Worcestershire; at Derby, Marcus Harris fields for Gloucestershire and wonders when he might get his next chance to bat in what for has been a rain-sodden season for his team; at Chester-le-Street Jonny Bairstow makes 16 not out and attempts to prove that he should bat and keep wicket for England this summer, although, to Bairstow himself, this is already a self-evident truth; at Grace Road, Steve Smith is leg before wicket to Wiaan Mulder for 3; and at Emirates Old Trafford James Anderson stimulates a crazed ferment on social and other media by failing to appear for the second day of Lancashire’s match against Somerset. In precisely five weeks’ time these five cricketers might be present at Edgbaston but for the moment they are playing – or in Anderson’s case, not playing – for their counties in Championship matches. And for many of those watching the cricket at Emirates Old Trafford this afternoon, it is those latter games that count. While they may note Lancashire’s verbal statement that Anderson’s “minor issue” is being dealt with by the county’s physio, Sam Byrne, their main concern is that the issue is sufficiently major to prevent their best bowler helping his team combat the preternatural skills of James Rew. For others watching the game, the whole affair gives rise to sly humour. “Jimmy Anderson’s up a step ladder changing light bulbs,” said someone at lunch, thereby causing consternation until it was explained to the uninitiated that the bloke in question is actually an electrician in Lancashire’s maintenance department.Eventually the news dribbles out from undisclosed sources that Anderson, the bowler not the spark, has something amiss with his groin, although no one will say whether the issue is major or minor or even whether Anderson is to have a scan on the affected area. It barely matters. Twitter goes cheerfully berserk and some recollections go back four years to the Australian summer when Anderson went in the calf at Sedbergh and subsequently played just one Test and bowled four overs before quitting the series.Four summers ago, though, Rew may well have been doing his GCSEs at King’s College, Taunton and here he surely cared little for anything but the fact that Championship cricket is a game he can play. Anderson’s absence mattered to him only in so far as he made his job of guiding Somerset’s recovery from 135 for 5 to 361 all out somewhat easier. In any case, Lancashire are his favourite opponents. Three of his 13 first-class games have been played against them and his aggregate is 362 runs at an average of 72. But the side currently captained by Dane Vilas are not the only team he has made suffer. He is currently Somerset’s leading scorer with 421 runs. For all that county cricket is no place for softies, this world must be especially fresh and lovely for James Rew at the moment. Time was when it held similar delights in store for Anderson. For those Lancashire supporters who saw Rew batting at Southport last year or at Taunton three weeks ago, the composure and self-possession he showed on Friday morning were not revelatory. His main run-scoring areas are on the off side and he drives anywhere between straight mid-off and backward point with considerable ease. Reprieved on both 20 and 70 when Lancashire’s slip cordon put chances down – in total Vilas’s fielders dropped seven catches in Somerset’s innings – Rew made good use of his escapes to help Kasey Aldridge add 106 for the sixth wicket. When they didn’t depend too heavily on their fielders, Lancashire depleted attack performed well on a pitch that had plainly eased since Thursday morning. In particular, Daryl Mitchell revealed something of what he might offer his new county by taking three wickets for 32 runs in 13 overs. Rew, who edged Mitchell to the substitute fielder, Rob Jones, at slip, was one of the New Zealanders’ victims but it was Matt Henry, another New Zealander making his debut, who dominated the latter stages of Somerset’s innings by hitting 50 off 39 balls, an effort that included three leg-side sixes in one over from Tom Hartley.Encouraged by his own cheerful thuggery, Henry then parried a fiercely driven drive from Luke Wells before catching the ball in both hands and thereby giving the Somerset bowlers precisely the early breakthrough they needed. For most of the evening session, however, it seemed Tom Abell’s attack would have to be content with that success but, having had a number of confident leg before appeals turned down, Jack Leach decided to dispense with the middle man and bowled Josh Bohannon for 31 three overs before the close. As is the habit of his trade, Rew scampered from behind the stumps to celebrate with his bowler and his broad grin will be an abiding image we can take from the day’s cricket. In the morning, though, the young man might discover something about the price of fish. If he turns to the cricket pages of the national newspapers, he will find that the headlines are not about him.

As a team we wish him all the best, our love and prayers are always with him,” Hardik Pandya, India’s captain for the T20I series against Sri Lanka which starts on Tuesday, told reporters. “Wish him a speedy recovery. Obviously, he was a very important part of the team, now everyone knows the situation and lot of other people can get opportunities.”Yes, Pant, if he was also there, he would have made a big difference because of the player he is, but now he is not there so we can’t control it. We will see what the future holds for us.”India’s three big assignments in 2023 are the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Tests against Australia) in India in February-March, a possible World Test Championship final in England in their summer, and the ODI World Cup in India’s early winter.Pant’s chances of making it to the first of these are slim although it can’t quite be ruled out. The other big event for Pant will be the IPL where he captains Delhi Capitals.

Confira o top 20:
