Zimbabwe clinch Super Over win to square T20I series in Netherlands

Brendan Taylor and Elton Chigumbura score the big runs before Tendai Chatara does the job with the ball as visitors end tour with their first win

The Report by Liam Brickhill25-Jun-2019
The second T20I in Rotterdam seesawed wildly into a dramatic tie and a Super Over finish in which Zimbabwe scored 18 thanks to Brendan Taylor and Elton Chigumbura, before Tendai Chatara held his nerve to keep Netherlands to just 9 for 1 in response. Chatara’s mettle helped Zimbabwe secure their first win of the tour – and a 1-1 series draw – but it was Roelof van der Merwe who almost stole the show as he snatched a tie out of an almost hopeless situation to set up the Super Over decider.Zimbabwe needed 13 off the final over and Chigumbura took them the brink with consecutive, mighty leg-side hits that levelled the scores. But in a blazing display of bravura, van der Merwe conjured up a dot ball followed by three wickets – a team hat-trick – to keep them from going past. Chigumbura was yorked by a quicker one, Chris Mpofu heaved and was bowled first ball, and with one needed from the last ball, Chatara’s swipe was stopped at short midwicket, and the ball was hurled back for van der Merwe to seal a run out.Van der Merwe, who finished with 4 for 34, had also been crucial in helping his team overcome Taylor’s electric start in the chase. With Netherlands having put up 152 for 8, thanks mainly to Max O’Dowd’s third fifty of the tour, Taylor was shunted up to open the batting in international cricket for the first time in seven years. He launched the pursuit with an array of attacking strokes against pace and spin alike. Fred Klaasen was driven and ramped and van der Merwe swept before Taylor jumped down the crease to play what was possibly the shot of the match – an inside-out checked loft over extra cover.Weathering the early loss of Hamilton Masakadza without skipping a beat, Taylor raised Zimbabwe’s fifty inside the Powerplay with a hopping uppercut off Paul van Meekeren. Zimbabwe’s rapid start had put them ahead of the asking rate, but Brandon Glover struck with the vital wicket, the fall of Taylor, Zimbabwe’s best batsman, sparking a collapse as 69 for 1 became 97 for 6.Taylor edged an attempted ramp to depart for 40, and van Meekeren then struck twice in his next over to see the back of Sean Williams and Craig Ervine. After tapping the ball around for an over or two amid asphyxiating spells from Glover and van der Merwe, the scoreboard pressure got to Sikandar Raza and Peter Moor, who both fell to catches in the deep off van der Merwe’s left-arm spin. The required rate quickly moved above ten, and Zimbabwe required 47 from the last four. Ryan Burl backed away to hack van Meekeren through cover, and then took ten runs off the first two balls of Pieter Seelaar’s comeback over – the 18th – before slapping a high catch out to long-off to leave Zimbabwe needing an unlikely 23 from the last 12 balls.Chigumbura took his time playing himself in in his first match of the tour, but once he found his range he quickly threatened to turn the match around once more. Klaasen was carted for six over midwicket in the penultimate over, setting up the showdown between a strutting Chigumbura and a combative van der Merwe. The left-arm spinner continued to attack the stumps, even after his first two balls had been deposited over the boundary, and Zimbabwe almost fluffed what should have been a simple finish when one run was needed from the last four balls.Zimbabwe made a better fist of their second go at victory in the Super Over, Chigumbura slugging one over the leg-side before Taylor scooped ten runs off two balls on either side of wicketkeeper Scott Edwards to lift their team to a total that Chatara made sure was out of Netherlands’ reach with a nerveless six balls.Their efforts meant a bruising fifty from O’Dowd went in vain. Even as wickets fell at the other end, he helped Netherlands chug through the Powerplay at 55 for 3. A back-foot thump out to wide long-on brought O’Dowd to a 36-ball half-century at the end of the 11th over, but he was one of four Dutch batsmen to fall to spin as Zimbabwe’s slow bowlers took control of the middle overs.Netherlands slipped to 120 for 7 before captain Seelaar chipped in with 29 not out to push them to a total that very nearly proved out of Zimbabwe’s reach.

Why Pep Guardiola 'completely agrees' with Erik ten Hag as under-pressure Man Utd boss prepares for crunch FA Cup final against Man City

Pep Guardiola said he had plenty of sympathy for Erik ten Hag after Manchester United endured their worst season in the Premier League era.

  • Red Devils suffered over 60 injuries
  • 'Your squad must be fit fit fit'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

City are overwhelming favourites heading into the FA Cup final against United after winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title. The Red Devils, by contrast, registered their lowest finish in the league since 1990 and finished with a negative goal difference. And the dire campaign looks set to cost Ten Hag his job. But Guardiola said he felt for United as they were hampered by relentless injury problems.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

"He has done many good things, I have huge respect for his job in the past and now at United I completely agree when I listen to him when he says they have not had a full squad this season and had a lot of injuries," Guardiola told a press conference. "I think this is the most important thing they have to think about because I am always focused that we have to be fit, fit, fit – otherwise we cannot use the players. They had a lot of problems and when that happens the manager suffers a lot. The squad is really good but the problem is when you cannot use them. This is a big disadvantage."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola said that United can never be counted out despite their problems and singled out Bruno Fernandes as their most influential player. "The brilliant players they have up front, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund. The influence of Bruno on that team is outstanding. His creativity is one of the best I have ever seen."

Ten Hag has had to contend with more than 60 injuries this season, leading to players missing a combined total of more than 350 games. United will still be missing Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire for the final, although City have no injury worries aside from Ederson, who would have missed out anyway as Stefan Ortega is the first choice goalkeeper in cup competitions.

Guptill happy to bide his time at Sunrisers

“When I come here I don’t expect to play straight away,” he said on the eve of Sunrisers’ first home game of the season, against Rajasthan Royals

Imagine being one of the biggest names in world cricket, but still unable to find a place in the playing XI when it comes to the IPL. Dale Steyn is a prime example. Given that an IPL team can field a maximum of four overseas players each game, Steyn – arguably the greatest fast bowler of this era – has been left cheering his side from the dugout on many occasions in the past.Martin Guptill may not hold the same cult status as Steyn, but his T20I record is right up there with the very best. While he didn’t get any bids during the auction ahead of the 2017 season, Guptill, the second-highest run-getter in T20Is, was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for his base price of INR 1 crore (USD 140,000) this time around. Guptill, though, knows he might have to wait to make his Sunrisers debut.”It’s funny. When I come here I don’t expect to play straight away,” Guptill said on the eve of Sunrisers’ first home game of the season, against Rajasthan Royals. “It was the same when I was with Kings XI [Punjab in 2017]; I didn’t play straightaway. Just sit back and watch, and try to do as much as I can to help the guys who are playing.”I got an opportunity to play with Mumbai a couple of years ago and Kings XI the next year. I had the year off last year, and coming here this year, I am looking to forward to hopefully getting an opportunity when the time comes but it’s one of those things; you bide your time until you get selected.”However, Guptill doesn’t get too worried about what happens during auctions.”I have been up in the auction a few times and I have been picked up but when I go into the auction, I go in with reasonably low expectations. If I get picked up, that’s great and if I don’t get picked up, then I am not too disappointed.”Of late, Guptill’s form has been a bit up and down. During the ODI series against India at home, he managed just 47 runs in four innings. A disc injury then kept him out of the T20I series, before he regained fitness and struck form with back-to-back ODI hundreds against Bangladesh.Guptill revealed that a couple of flaws had crept into his batting which he ironed out with the help of his Auckland coach Mark O’Donnell.”I had a few issues with something in my game during the India series at home. There were a couple of balance issues. I wasn’t loading up properly in my sit up and that was causing me to play different lines than what I would have liked to. But I watched a lot of footage of what I was doing at that time and what I was doing previously that was working for me.”I managed to work on those hard and come on the other side and got a couple of centuries against Bangladesh. I am just looking to carry on that sort of rhythm and form that I had there and if I get an opportunity to play, hopefully I can translate that in the middle.”While he may or may not get a chance to play for Sunrisers soon, Guptill is looking forward to facing the likes of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi at the nets, which he believes will help him firm his plans for the World Cup.”I haven’t faced Rashid yet but I have played with him in the CPL a couple of years ago. He’s an amazing bowler, very hard to face because he bowls so quick. I am looking forward to batting against him in the nets and figuring out how to play him because we got them [Afghanistan] second [third] game at the World Cup this year. So I will be trying to face him in the nets so that I can put some plans in place before I face him at the World Cup.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With his season prematurely ended, the midfielder's future remains uncertain as the medical teams of both clubs are currently in discussions to determine whether Phillips will return to Manchester or stay in London to undergo his rehabilitation. Moreover, his latest injury is a huge setback to his chances of getting called up by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024 with the manager expected to announce his squad for the tournament later this month.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Phillips got embroiled in a needless controversy in March when he lost his cool and showed his middle finger to a fan after being labelled as "useless" following a defeat to Newcastle United.

However, David Moyes defended the midfielder on that occasion and said: "Kalvin’s a human being and what he needs is support and people to help him, which is what we’ll do. We need our fans to give all our players the support they require. Kalvin’s a really good player and I do believe we can still make something out of the time we’ve got with him here.”

Despite Phillips' premature departure, West Ham remains focused on their upcoming fixtures, with a crucial match against Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. They will finish their campaign with games against Luton Town and Manchester City on May 11 and 19, respectively. However, Phillips would have been ineligible to play against his parent club, even if he was fit, due to a clause in his contract.

Stockport County looked the more dominant side in the first half having enjoyed the lion's share of possession. They came close to scoring on a couple of occasions before finally breaking the deadlock around the half-hour mark. The Red Dragons lost possession in their half allowing Callum Champs to win the ball who set up Connor Lemonheigh-Evans with a brilliant pass from which the midfielder found the back of the net.

The hosts started the second half on a stronger note as it took them only a minute to score the equaliser. Ollie Palmer received a pin-point long ball from Eoghan O'Connell near the edge of the box with a brilliant first touch before slotting the ball home.

Phil Parkinson's side looked more comfortable with the ball after the break as they dominated possession in the early stages of the second half. In the 87th minute, Andy Cannon's thunderous strike from the right edge of the box flew into the top left corner which helped the Welsh club end a brilliant season on a memorable note.

    THE MVP

Lemonheigh-Evans was the star performer for the newly-crowned League Two champions. As well as scoring the opening goal for Stockport, the 27-year-old showed his dominance across the pitch and created several goal-scoring opportunities for his side.

    THE BIG LOSER

Red Dragons star Paul Mullin had a rare off day on the pitch as the forward failed to have much impact for his club. The 29-year-old did have a couple of chances to increase his season's goals tally but was unable to convert.

Conceding 500 runs in warm-up not a concern – Pujara

India are refusing to give away any secrets ahead of the first Test against Australia but remain confident they have a bowling attack that can compete despite a tough workout in the warm-up match in Sydney, where they were taken for a mammoth 544 by an inexperienced Cricket Australia XI.The India bowlers – 10 of them were eventually used in the non-first-class fixture – toiled through 151.1 overs against a batting line-up that held just 78 first-class appearances, 50 of them from captain Sam Whiteman alone.India’s current pace resources have been billed as their strongest ever and have performed impressively on the tours of South Africa and England this year. A couple of tough days in the field have not dented confidence, though.”The bowlers already had a meeting, and conceding 500 runs in a warm-up game doesn’t mean anything,” Cheteshwar Pujara said. “It wasn’t a Test match, so we are not worried about it. Our bowlers know what they have to do. I can’t say what their gameplan is, but they know what line and lengths to bowl in Australia, and most of them have played here in 2014-15. As a bowling unit, we are very confident.”In the last few years, we have produced some quality fast bowlers and even when it comes to bench strength, even if a couple of our fast bowlers are injured, they will have some back-up. When it comes to fast bowling, this is probably one of the best attacks we have in many years. I am not saying we didn’t have a good fast-bowling attack in the past. I don’t know the reason, it could be the IPL which has helped produce good fast bowlers and is benefiting the Indian Test team at the moment.”Cheteshwar Pujara works the ball towards the leg side•BCCI

It won’t just be the quicks who will have a key role to play with much focus also on the role of the spinner, with R Ashwin looking set to be the one frontline option selected following his 40 overs in the warm-up match. Ashwin’s overall record in Australia is a less-than-flattering 21 wickets at 54.71, but Pujara hinted that he has some new tricks up his sleeve.”I always say he is a clever bowler and reads the batsmen really well. If you see his recent bowling, he has made a lot of changes – I can’t describe what it is in [a] press conference. He has made some adjustments which have helped him and he has also played some county cricket and played enough cricket in England which are different conditions, overseas, and obviously there’s not much help for the spinner. When he is playing in Australia he knows what to do and he has also played here in 2014-15. He is very confident now and whatever adjustments he has to make he has already done it.”India opted against a full training session in Adelaide on Monday with just a handful of players coming down for an optional net.”To be honest, we got what we wanted in the practice game,” Pujara said. “The trainer and physio had been monitoring the workload, so depending on that we thought it is best to take a break and train for the next two days and be fresh for the Test.”

“Nothing is certain” – Nino shares update on links to Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are claimed to have reached an agreement to sign Fluminense star Nino, but the player himself has delivered an update on his future contrary to reports.

Who is Nino?

Nino is naturally a centre-back who has plied his trade at the Maracana Stadium permanently since 2020, having joined following a successful loan spell the season before, and he’s since gone on to make a total of 228 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Nino statistics).

However, Brazil’s international will reach the expiration of his deal in December 2024 (Fluminense contracts), meaning that Fernando Diniz’s side don’t have long left to cash in should they not want to risk losing their prized asset for free.

Fluminense’s captain was recently reported to have agreed on a €7m (£6m) move to join Steve Cooper's side at the start of next year, and this was soon backed up by a reliable journalist. Bruno Andrade stated that the two parties have a verbal arrangement in place with the 26-year-old only needing to sign the contract to get the deal done, but it would appear that a switch is far from nearing completion following an update from the man himself.

Nino shares update on move to Nottingham Forest

Speaking to Globo Esporte (via Sport Witness), Nino confirmed that whilst Nottingham Forest do want to secure his services, nothing has yet been decided regarding him moving to the Premier League.

He said: “I also found out about the interest on the day before [the final]. My agent already knew that my focus was on recovery, on being able to play this game 100%.

“I did it, thank God. I met with them this morning, they gave me all the possible situations, nothing is certain yet, what is certain is what I’ve always said, that I have a great affection for Fluminense, I’m very happy here, and if one day I leave, I want to leave in a way that’s good for me and for Fluminense.”

Fluminense defender Nino.

Nino has been a rock at the heart of the backline this season, currently averaging 3.7 clearances and three aerial wins per game in the Brazilian Serie A (WhoScored – Nino statistics), and he’s also been excellent with the ball at his feet.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Diniz’s colossus is recording a 91% pass success rate as it stands which highlights his brilliant calmness and composure on the ball, and this is higher than any of the regular starters have managed so far this term at The City Ground (WhoScored – Nottingham Forest statistics).

Furthermore, Nino already knows what it takes to compete and be successful at a high level having won the 2022/23 Copa Libertadores trophy, alongside previously representing his nation at the Olympics, so he would be able to pass on a much-needed winning mentality to the squad who are already in the Midlands.

Molineux, top-order muscle give Australia 1-0 lead in T20Is

Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner continued their sparkling form, while Sophie Molineux bagged a career-best 4 for 16

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2018Getty ImagesBatsmen Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner carried their sparkling form from the ODIs into the T20Is and left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux bagged career-best figures of 4 for 16 to continue Australia women’s dominance over Pakistan women. After putting on a challenging 195 for 3, Australia allowed only one Pakistan batsman to score over 25 and restricted them to 131 for 7 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.Opting to bat, Australia’s top order took on the bowlers from the first over, as Beth Mooney (38) and Healy hammered three fours and a six each to put on 57 in the Powerplay. Mooney was soon trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu, but Healy continued smashing boundaries to reach her fifth T20I half-century – following her 97 in the third ODI three days ago – off only 28 balls. Gardner took over once Healy fell for 59, and struck three consecutive fours against Aliya Riaz in the 16th over. Even though Nida Dar took the big wicket of Meg Lanning for 6 in the next over, Elyse Villani belted an unbeaten 18 off 13 and Gardner’s 63 off 37, with nine fours and a six, powered Australia close to the 200-run mark. Gardner had also struck an unbeaten 62 in the third ODI against Pakistan, although at No. 7.Sana Mir, who recently became the top-ranked bowler in ODIs, Sandhu and Dar conceded at least 10 runs per over each, and sent down eight wides together.Molineux struck on her fifth ball by removing left-handed opener Muneeba Ali for a duck, when she paddled the ball fine but Healy completed a quick take and a stumping down the leg side. Javeria Khan showed glimpses of form with a back-foot punch and a slog towards wide long-on for fours against Ellyse Perry in the third over, but Molineux returned in the fifth over and took a straightforward return catch to her left to remove Javeria for a 12-ball 16.Nahida Khan, the other opener, and debutant Umaima Sohail scored briskly in a stand of 55 for the third wicket to take Pakistan past 80 just after the halfway mark. Molineux broke that stand too, when Nahida tried slog-sweeping but missed, to be bowled for a 32-ball 43. From 82 for 3 in the 11th over, Pakistan never recovered, losing four more wickets for 41 runs and managing only 29 runs in the last five overs.Megan Schutt was economical once again, with figures of 4-0-14-1 and Molineux’s four-for showed good signs for Australia’s spin attack ahead of the Women’s World T20 next month.

Rangers manager news: Update on "leading contender" Philippe Clement

Rangers look to have made significant progress in their search for a new manager, with a "leading contender" now coming to the fore in the race to take charge.

Rangers manager links

It has been an extremely busy week or so at Ibrox, with lots of work going into finding Michael Beale's successor, following his sacking earlier in the month. Interviews have taken place with some candidates while numerous different names have been thrown into the gossip about a new Rangers manager, including English trio Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Meanwhile, a number of foreign coaches have also been looked at as strong choices for the job, with Philippe Clement, Pascal Jansen and Kevin Muscat all seen as possible options to replace Beale at Ibrox.

While the international break does give those high up at Rangers a little more time to work on nailing the next managerial incoming, a new update suggests that they may have found their man.

Former Monaco boss Philippe Clement.

Philippe Clement favourite for Rangers job

Taking to X on Tuesday morning, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook provided a big Rangers manager update on Clement, claiming that he has emerged as the front-runner to replace Beale:

"TalkSPORT understands Philippe Clement is the leading contender for the Rangers job. Kevin Muscat still in the race. Won't be Scott Parker or Frank Lampard. How do Gers fans feel about it?"

This certainly suggests that it is arguably his job to lose at this point, with the 49-year-old an exciting option, having achieved a lot in his relatively short managerial career to date. Clement has won the Belgian league title on four occasions – three times with Club Brugge and once with Genk – and Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell has hailed his approach to the game, saying of Clement's tactics:

"His profile as a modern coach, with his teams playing with great intensity and [is] daring, including on the continental stage. His ability to combine titles and the development of young players have made him one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

It doesn't look like a done deal yet for Rangers, but it is encouraging to see the club looking likely to bring in a manager who has proven himself at a good level, rather than simply being a big name in the footballing world.

The likes of Clement and Muscat have won titles and earned respect for the jobs they have done, while someone such as Lampard, for example, achieved little during spells in charge of Chelsea and Everton, and has arguably gotten jobs because of his playing career.

The hope is that Clement's arrival is confirmed sooner rather than latter, putting the issue to bed and heralding the start of an exciting new era at Ibrox, as they look to make up ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.
