Aston Villa now eyeing free agent signing after shock contract termination

Aston Villa are considering a surprise move for a 24-year-old defender who has just seen his contract terminated with another club, according to a new report. The Villans get their Champions League campaign underway on Tuesday night, and they will be looking to continue their strong start to the 2024/25 season.

Aston Villa rumours and news

The January transfer window is still a long way away, but Aston Villa already seem to be getting their plans in place for 2025, as Unai Emery could eye more reinforcements despite what was a busy summer window.

Most of Villa’s summer signings are starting to bed down and impress for the Premier League side, but a few haven’t been given the chance yet, with the likes of Samuel Iling-Junior leaving on loan, spending the season at Bologna.

The winger made his debut for his new side over the weekend, impressing as he scored a last-minute equaliser to rescue a point for the Serie A outfit. Iling-Junior is said to have “turned the tables” since joining Bologna after what the report describes as being rejected by Emery.

Meanwhile, according to a new report, Aston Villa are now in a race to sign Souleymane Sidibe from Stoke City. The 17-year-old has been catching the eye while playing for the Potters, so much so that teams such as Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City are interested in signing him. Sidibe has already made a good impact this season, and it appears as though top-flight teams are keen to lure the youngster to them.

Aston Villa considering move for surprise free agent

According to HITC, Aston Villa are interested in signing Oumar Solet, who is now a free agent after leaving Red Bull Salzburg over the weekend. The Midlands side are not the only team interested in the defender, as Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and West Ham are also keen.

Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur were said to have looked at the player during the summer when he was still under contract, but it remains to be seen if they are still interested.

Solet now finds himself without a club, as Salzburg decided to end his contract on Saturday, despite him entering the final year. The Frenchman, who can play at centre-back as well as defensive midfield, was with the Austrian side for four years, after he joined them in 2020 from Lyon.

The 24-year-old was very successful during his time in Austria, as he won the league three times in three consecutive campaigns.

Arsenal struck gold with Arteta signing who’s worth more than Odegaard

It's been a wild ride for Arsenal fans over the last few years, as they have seen their side go from mid-table mediocrity to consistent title challengers under the leadership of Mikel Arteta.

The former captain of the club has been transformational in the dugout, and so have a number of his signings, be that Gabriel at the back, Leandro Trossard on the wing or even Kai Havertz up top.

However, perhaps no addition has been quite as emblematic of the Gunners' shift from also-rans to serious contenders as the signing of Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian joined the club as a former wonderkid with plenty to prove and has become one of the most important players in the Premier League, and yet there is another Arsenal star who is worth even more than him.

Odegaard's valuation in 2024

Following a reasonably successful, if not slightly underwhelming, loan spell in the latter half of the 20/21 campaign, the Gunners decided to sign Odegaard in August 2021 for a fee that is likely to hit £34m with add-ons and to say that the move has been a success since would be quite the understatement.

For example, in his 156 appearances for the club, the Norwegian "wizard," as dubbed by former footballer Babayele Sodade, has scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.60 games.

Moreover, he's been improving seemingly year-on-year, so who knows how many goal involvements he'll be able to rack up this season, should the injury he picked up on Monday night not be too serious.

However, it's not just his raw output that makes him such a spectacular player to watch. He's also proven himself to be a fantastic leader, as despite being just 23 years old at the time, he was named club captain in July 2022, just a year and a half after being named Norway captain as well.

In all, the former Real Madrid ace has transformed from a youngster with plenty of potential into an incredibly gifted leader who also happens to be one of the most technically gifted midfielders in England.

So, with all that said, it shouldn't come as a surprise that his valuation has shot up in recent years. According to Transfermarkt, he is now worth a whopping €110m, which is about £93m.

While that's an enormous sum of money, it's still lower than the valuation of one of his teammates.

Declan Rice's valuation in 2024

Yes, the star in question is Arsenal's £105m man, Declan Rice, whom Transfermarkt currently values at a massive €120m, which converts to about £101m, and while that is slightly less than the fee the Gunners paid for him, it's still a ringing endorsement to see him even get close a year later.

Moreover, while this sort of valuation isn't all that unusual for world-class attacking players today, there are very few defensive midfielders who are valued as highly, bar perhaps Rodri, whom Transfermarkt prices at €130m, or £110m.

That said, while it's an enormous valuation, it would be hard to argue that it isn't justified, as the former West Ham United captain was one of Arsenal's best and most consistent players last season.

For example, across all competitions, the "phenomenal" midfielder, as dubbed by respected analyst EBL, made 51 appearances for Arteta, in which he scored seven goals and provided ten assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every three games, which is a frankly ludicrous level of output for a player who started 31 games as a six, 19 as an eight and one as a centre-back.

Another massive benefit to having the England international in the team is that, despite playing consistent first-team football from such a young age, he has a remarkably clean bill of health and, as things stand, has only missed seven games across his entire career due to injury.

Ultimately, Arsenal are incredibly fortunate to have Odegaard and Rice in the team, and while they have yet to win anything in North London, it feels more like a matter of when and not if with them at the heart of the midfield.

£40 million Aston Villa star could make dramatic late deadline day exit

A £40 million Aston Villa player could still make a dramatic late exit from the Midlands in these final hours of the transfer window, with manager Unai Emery seeing changes to his squad very much possible.

Villa spend around £150m in busy summer transfer window

After qualifying for the new Champions League format last season, NSWE and Monchi made a serious effort to back their Villa head coach with an array of star signings, even if they had to part company with key men like Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz.

Emery's pushing: Aston Villa working on signing Konsa 2.0 in £35m star

He’s been a long-term target for Emery

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 29, 2024

Emery's side have splashed a near-£150 million on Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen, Jaden Philogene, Cameron Archer, Samuel Illing-Junior, Lewis Dobbin, Enzo Barrenchea and Ross Barkley so far this summer, but perhaps one more could come through the door before 11pm.

Unfortunately for Villa, it appears a top late transfer target in Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida may not be joining Villa after all. It is believed Villa were closing in on a deal for Geertruida at one point, but he is now on his way for a medical with RB Leipzig after the Bundesliga side hijacked their move.

While this is bad news for Villa, there is a case to be made that they've significantly strengthened in a few key areas already, but perhaps selling certain fringe members of their squad could raise last-minute funds to sign an alternative to Geertruida – if they're that eager to bolster their backline.

Striker Jhon Duran has been repeatedly linked with an exit all summer and was reportedly thought to be in talks to join the likes of West Ham United and Chelsea over these last few months, but a transfer did not come to fruition.

Duran could make dramatic late deadline day exit from Villa

The Colombian is stuck in limbo after a succession of failed moves away, but talkSPORT claim an exit is still on the cards for Duran as we fast approach the last hurrah of this window.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

His price tag is set at around £40 million, according to some reports, but it is unclear whether clubs would be willing to pay it.

"Jhon Duran is a special player," said Emery on Duran.

"We have to try and help him. He is a good guy, and he needs a team behind him. He is getting our demands better. He was very clinical and today was important for him

"Today we are celebrating with our supporters, we have to push it and keep working and be consistent. We were consistent all the season. The team was being mature and always consistent in our mind. Inch by inch we did it.

"We are very proud of the season. It is not enough at the moment to get fourth. Even after we scored the two goals, we had chances. We are celebrating the season here with our supporters in Villa Park. We are only thinking of us. We will prepare for our match on Sunday, everything is in our hands."

West Ham move for £30m+ star on £400k-p/w would be "signing of the summer"

West Ham United could make the “signing of the summer” with a £33m deal for one target, according to former player Frank McAvennie.

West Ham transfer rumours

The Hammers have been looking to make their fourth summer signing for weeks now, with winger Luis Guilherme, experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Max Kilman already through the London Stadium door. Technical director Tim Steidten and new manager Julen Lopetegui haven’t had much luck, though, with moves for a number of targets falling through.

However, they appear to be making progress on a deal for Manchester United right-back Aaron-Wan Bissaka, with talks thought to be at an advanced stage for the 26-year-old.

The right-back has said “yes” to West Ham in a deal that could be worth up to £20m, whereas Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Fullkrug appears to be a concrete target in attack, with talks now advancing over a transfer.

With the focus now currently on Wan-Bissaka and Fullkrug, there has also been speculation about former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, currently at Al-Ittihad.

The Hammers had been in talks over a deal and even had an opening offer turned down by the Saudi Pro League side, with reports earlier this month suggesting that West Ham could return with an improved £33m bid for the Frenchman, and that prospect has got McAvennie very excited.

West Ham move for Kante would be "signing of the summer" – McAvennie

Talking to West Ham Zone in the last 48 hours regarding the possibility of Kante moving to West Ham, McAvennie described the midfielder as a “wonderful talent” who was “outstanding” at Euro 2024 and also said it “would be the signing of the summer”.

“Brilliant. It would be the best signing I’ve seen the club do for a while. I like him – he’s the kind of player we need. He just stops everything, it’d be great for West Ham.

“Kante for £33million? Bring him in. He’s a wonderful talent. At the Euros, he was outstanding, even despite playing in Saudi. It would be a dream for me. I’ve never seen him let down Chelsea or France. It would be the signing of the summer if we got him.”

The 33-year-old has plenty of experience in England with Leicester City and Chelsea and has made 227 appearances in the Premier League, lifting the league title in 2015/16 and 2016/17. He has been with Al-Ittihad for just over 12 months now, on £400,000-a-week, playing 44 games for his current employers, scoring four times and registering six assists.

It could be one to keep an eye on in the final weeks of the window, but for now, West Ham’s focus could be on finalising deals for Wan-Bissaka and Fullkrug.

Jose Mourinho wants £90k-p/w West Ham star after Hammers hijack Rodriguez

Jose Mourinho is ready to make a move for one West Ham ace after another transfer he was working on fell through due to being hijacked by the Hammers, it has been reported.

West Ham working hard to strengthen

The arrival of Julen Lopetegui this summer has brought with it a freeing of funds in east London, with several new faces set to be on show when the Hammers kick off their new Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on 17th August.

After a difficult 2023-24 season under David Moyes, West Ham have added four new signings and plenty more are expected to arrive between now and the transfer deadline on August 30th.

Indeed, two are imminent additions. The first of those is Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, who was unveiled on Monday evening ahead of a switch to east London that is believed to have set the Hammers back a fee of 32m euros (£27m).

The second of those is free agent Guido Rodriguez, who saw his time with Real Betis come to a close this summer and is now set to pen a two year deal at the London Stadium to bolster their midfield ranks. However, their move for Rodriguez may have unforeseen consequences at the London Stadium.

Mourinho wants West Ham man

That comes as Jose Mourinho is keen to take midfield man Tomas Soucek away from West Ham this summer. Now in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, the ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss has made eight new signings this summer, including ex-Newcastle winger Alan Saint-Maximin.

But he saw a potential move for Rodriguez fall through at the eleventh hour courtesy of interest from West Ham, who ultimately secured the Argentine's signature.

And now he has turned his attention to the very man Rodriguez may replace at the London Stadium, with Turkish outlet Takvim [via HITC] claiming that Mourinho is ready to try and land Tomas Soucek this summer to fill the hole in his midfield.

Soucek started 34 Premier League games last season for the Hammers, and still has three years left to run on his £90,000 a week deal at the London Stadium.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

However, the 29-year-old faces fresh competition in the middle of Lopetegui's midfield with Rodriguez joining James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez as options for the new Hammers boss to choose from.

There is even speculation that West Ham may still be chasing another midfielder before the window closes, which would heighten the competition for places yet further, and at 29, Soucek is entering the last few windows for West Ham to see any return on their £19m investment on the Czech midfielder.

Meanwhile, a move to Turkey would see him return to European football, which could even be the Champions League if Mourinho's side are able to beat Lille in the play-off for Europe's elite competition.

West Ham can forget Kilman with move for “the best CB in the Championship"

Julen Lopetegui is striving to build up his West Ham United side after David Moyes' tenure reached its culmination. Luis Guilherme has already been signed to add some exciting depth and potential to the flanks.

However, with Mohammed Kudus pushing for a move away from the London Stadium and Lucas Paqueta's footballing future uncertain, more depth is needed up top.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham.

Moreover, likely defensive exits have led to a concerted effort toward signing Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that talks are being held to sign him.

However, West Ham would be wise to seek out alternatives, indeed fixing upon another talented defender.

West Ham transfer news

As per Football Insider, West Ham are rivalling newly-promoted Premier League rivals Ipswich Town for Hull City's Jacob Greaves, having held talks ahead of a possible deal.

The Athletic have revealed that the Tractor Boys have presented a £10m proposal to Hull but this will be swiftly rejected. Others, seemingly West Ham, are monitoring.

Why West Ham are pursuing Jacob Greaves

Greaves has been described as a "top-class" player by Championship-centred podcast host Ryan Dilks, even being crowned Hull's Player of the Season after his exemplary 2023/24 season.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 1 star ranked among the top 8% of centre-backs in the Championship last term for assists, the top 11% for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for passes attempted, the top 25% for tackles and the top 4% for aerial battles won per 90.

It's no wonder that football writer Alex Osborn hailed him as "the best CB in the Championship last season", having played a significant role in the Tigers' albeit unsuccessful push for promotion.

While Lopetegui hopes to sign Kilman after spending a season with the 27-year-old at Molineux, Greaves is capable of emulating the Wolves captain in creativity, combativeness and sharpness, with the table above really highlighting the myriad similarities between the respective stars.

Kilman, moreover, is not going to come cheap. Valued as high as £50m by Wolves, he would exhaust significant resources at a time of pressing need for additions across the board.

Greaves has all the skills to succeed in east London and he could be a real bargain for a West Ham side in transition, clearly aligning with Lopetegui's preferred style given his striking similarities to Kilman.

Tottenham in talks over 3-player swap deal involving Lo Celso and £50m ace

Tottenham are believed to be in talks with a three-player swap deal involving Giovani Lo Celso and a £50 million ace, coming after making a "new proposal" behind the scenes.

Spurs targeting new midfield No 6 for Postecoglou

Uncertainty surrounds the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lo Celso, with both midfield men tipped by some reports to leave N17 in the coming weeks.

Hojbjerg is believed to be keen on departing Tottenham, after a Premier League campaign where he was largely relegated to Ange Postecoglou's substitutes' bench. The Denmark international started just eight out of his 36 top-flight matches, and could seek to move on as a result with his contract also expiring next year.

Lo Celso is also rumoured to be unhappy with his game time at Spurs, which may result in the Argentine pushing to quit this summer. Some reports have even claimed Tottenham would be open to selling Yves Bissouma for the right offer, so Postecoglou's midfield could look pretty different next season, depending on developments.

In any case, it's been claimed that Spurs are targeting a midfield No 6 to potentially replace one of the outgoing men, but also to hand Postecoglou a new option more tailor-made to the Australian's system.

Tottenham have long been linked with a move for Conor Gallagher, as pressure grows on Chelsea to sell the Englishman before his contract expires next year. Another midfielder Spurs like is Atalanta star Ederson, with ex-managing director and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici recommending him.

As has been widely reported by reliable media sources, Aston Villa starlet Jacob Ramsey is also a candidate for the Lilywhites midfield. Ramsey, who made 16 top-flight appearances under Unai Emery last term, is liked by Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange is said to be pushing for the north Londoners to strike a deal (Alasdair Gold).

It will be a difficult move to pull off, though, as Villa are holding firm on their not-for-sale stance as things stand after Tottenham had an opening player-plus-cash bid of £20 million and Lo Celso rejected.

That isn't to stop Spurs from trying, as an update emerges on their pursuit of Ramsey this week.

Tottenham in talks over three-player swap deal for Ramsey

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham are in talks over a three-player swap deal involving Ramsey and another unnamed Villa player.

This "new proposal" apparently still includes Lo Celso going in the opposite direction, but as of yet, it is unclear who the other player is who would be making the move to Tottenham with Ramsey.
