Premier League insight on NUFC takeover

Lee Ryder has dropped some enticing insight from chiefs of the Premier League on both of the Newcastle United takeover cases launched against them.

The Lowdown: Ashley launches claims

Mike Ashley has launched an arbitration case against the top flight with regards to the failed takeover deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, which is set to take place in the coming months.

The chief executive of Sports Direct has also launched a separate anti-competition lawsuit against the division over their decision-making process in the failed takeover bid, which will be kept in his back pocket in case the arbitration hearing does not in his favour.

The Latest: Premier League insight

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder, North East football journalist who has been following the whole takeover saga closely, has shared that chiefs of the Premier League think that both cases are too similar, and have since handed in detailed evidence to have the anti-competition lawsuit stopped.

Ryder also claimed that it looks as if the top flight are trying to play for time, by continually trying to slow down the takeover process and argue their case.

The Verdict: Premier League could be on edge

The fact that the division are seemingly trying to delay the process and arguing that the two cases are too similar does suggest that they could be feeling pessimistic about the potential outcome of the initial arbitration hearing.

Adding Ashley’s confidence that he will get the right result into the mix, it seems as if the top flight could be feeling some pressure with regards to the direction in which the takeover could potentially be heading.

Nonetheless, the results of the arbitration proceedings should give a much clearer picture, and the St. James’ Park faithful will need full cooperation from the division if there is any hope of the original deal being revived.

Derby handed Teden Mengi transfer boost

Derby County have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Teden Mengi back to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that Wayne Rooney’s side appear to be on course to land the Manchester United centre-back on another loan deal in the current transfer window, with the Premier League runners-up content to send the 19-year-old back to the Championship side after they secured survival on the final day of the season.

Rooney will be buzzing

With Derby remaining under a transfer embargo due to Mel Morris’ ongoing search to find a buyer for the club, something that limits the Rams’ transfer activity to loans and free transfers, as well as any potential incomings having to be paid a sensible wage, the news that Mengi looks set to make a return to Pride Park this summer is sure to have Rooney buzzing.

Indeed, over his nine Championship appearances while on loan at the club last season, the £1.35m-rated defender turned in a number of impressive performances in what were extremely challenging circumstances.

In the league, the 19-year-old helped his side keep a total of one clean sheet, while also making an average of 1.1 interceptions, one tackle, 2.4 clearances and winning 3.8 duels per game, with these metrics culminating in the youngster earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.67.

As such, with Rooney looking to build a side in the transfer window that is capable of mounting a push towards the top half of the second tier table next season, the potential return of a player whom the 35-year-old manager claimed is a “fantastic” centre-back will give the former England captain at least one reason to be cheerful in the coming months, particularly when factoring the mess that his side remain in away from the pitch.

In other news: Derby handed huge blow over £18k-p/w “maverick”, it will leave Rooney livid

Liverpool linked with Patson Daka

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their reported chase of RB Salzburg striker Patson Daka as the opening of the transfer window approaches, with the player given time off international duty to perhaps secure a move away from Austria.

What’s the story?

According to a report from Spain last week, the 22-year-old could become Jurgen Klopp’s second summer signing in the coming days, seeing off competition from West Ham United.

Zambia coach Milutin Sredojevic has since provided an update on Daka’s future, revealing that the forward has been omitted from his latest international squad so he can sort of his future, perhaps indicating that a transfer is on the horizon.

“Daka, Mwepu and Kangwa have to decide on their next future, and it is just fair that they can make a decision that is in the best interest of the country,” he said.

Could be a top signing

The youngster enjoyed a sensational 2020/21 campaign with Jesse Marsch’s men, bagging 34 goals and providing 12 assists in 42 appearances as Salzburg recorded a domestic double.

His arrival would signal the second Liverpool purchase from a Red Bull side this summer, following the arrival of centre-back Ibrahima Konate from Leipzig.

The duo would add to Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino on the list of players Klopp has purchased from the energy drink company’s footballing system, with the German manager a known fan of their pressing style.

It means Daka could be a natural fit at Anfield and arrive with an understanding of the demands that the former Borussia Dortmund boss would put on him.

While injuries to key defenders Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip ensured Liverpool’s Premier League title defence never got off the ground, the disappointing form of their forwards also severely undermined their efforts.

Mane and Roberto Firmino had hugely underwhelming seasons, while the likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri failed to step up during their droughts.

With Origi, Shaqiri and Minamino all linked with moves away from the Reds in recent weeks, Klopp will be in desperate need of attacking reinforcements and perhaps none will be as appealing as Daka.

Former Zambia head coach Herve Renard once described the clinical speed demon as a “very promising player,” and he’s certainly had no problem living up to that billing since.

At 22, Daka is only going to improve and his extra firepower could catapult Liverpool back to the summit of English football next season.

Tudor and Stewart put Surrey in command

There are two ways to approach the new day if you leave the field within one shot of a century. Both were displayed at The Oval today.Alex Tudor, on the brink of a first century in what should be a long and successful all-round career was as nervy and excitable as he had been imperious on Day One. Alec Stewart, fast approaching his fiftieth hundred, simply hit the first ball of the day, admittedly a gift almost half-volley length outside his leg stump, to the ropes. His partner looked to have slept little and worried lots and could only play and miss, and even attempted to give catching pratice to the slips (he couldn’t even do this right, it fell well short) before an edge finally beat the cordon and he was safely a real batsman at last. Pressure relieved, Tudor could hardly miss a ball for a while – one cover drive would have stood out in any innings ever played, other shots were more brutal, but just as effective. With the two-hundred partnership having been hoisted Stewart (106) missed a ball keeping low, and after an interval Tudor (116) was caught in the deep from a top edge. Essex may have breathed a sigh of relief but losing the eighth wicket does not signal the arrival of the Surrey tail(more commonly pronounced Giddins). Salisbury and in particular Bicknell looked set on hoisting 500 to make their bowling tasks later in the day simpler. After the leg-spinner was caught off McGarry, the entire Essex team seemed to retreat to the fence to stop Bicknell scoring boundaries and offer him singles, a tactic which failed as theyhad but nine outfielders and would have needed twenty. The second loudest cheer of the day (after Tudor’s hundred) greeted a four to Giddins before Irani, strangely underbowled, ended the carnage by bowling Bicknell (38).The game seemed to resume on a different ground. Whereas the Essex bowlers had struggled to achieve a hint of movement, though with occasionally variable bounce, Bicknell, faster than any of the Essex bowlers and getting much more bounce, could not control the ball at all in his first over, the ball swinging enough to have two wides called.Tudor at the other end got little movement and seemed to be unable to hit the seam consistently – perhaps a symptom of a sleepless night – but generated alarming pace. The first runs from the bat came from an edge past third slip in his first over that reached the pavillion before any fielder had moved.Bicknell soon had the measure of the swing and by the time he decieved Prichard (0) with a slower ball he had beaten him on both sides of the bat more than once. Robinson (7) left a beautiful inswinger, perhaps assuming it would bounce over the stumps. It did, but not over the bails. The wicket bringing Law out to join Grayson. Law immediately looked more assured than hiscolleagues but hardly comfortable, clearing the slips with an uncomfortable edge, and playing and missing at Bicknell. Giddins replaced Tudor bowling as fast as I have seen him for his new county and getting much more movement than Tudor, finally getting Grayson (37) caught at point by Ward.Ben Hollioake replaced Bicknell and the scoring rate improved, the young allrounder showing both sides of his bowling. Some unplayable away swingers were mixed with too many short balls and half-volleys allowing Law to get well underway.Law, on the way to a classy but hardly chanceless hundred (he was dropped or missed either side of 50 and on 99, all hard chances). The rest of the Essex batting however seemed unable to cope with any of the Surrey bowlers.Irani (17), surely over-promoted at number five in a first-class game, looked to slog the side out of trouble before pulling a fast shortish ball onto his stumps. Peters (23) was correct but not able to cope for long with Bicknell’s return to the Vauxhall end.Neither Foster or Anderson (who had earlier been the pick of the Essex bowlers) looked to be middle-order batsmen, Foster in particular looking very uncomfortable facing Tudor. From a stance inside the crease, a step back before the ball is bowled inspires little confidence.Ilott however played well got into line and drove with some force before both sides seemed todecide that enough was enough and Salisbury and Ramprakash bowled a few overs to bring a long day to a close, not without Salisbury spinning the ball enough to suggest that the second Essex innings will be any easier. At the close of day two of the CricInfo Championship Division One game at The Oval, Essex were 265 for 7 in their first innings, still 223 behind Surrey’s first innings total of 498.

Liverpool linked with Gareth Bale

Liverpool have been tipped as one of the clubs who could make a move for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale as speculation over his future mounts.

What’s the story?

The 31-year-old enjoyed a productive if tumultuous season-long loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur in 2020/21 but has refused to reveal his plans for the future.

According to TalkSport pundit and ex-Spurs striker Darren Bent, Bale could be the subject of interest from Reds over the coming months as Jurgen Klopp looks to wrestle back their Premier League crown.

Edwards must avoid

Speaking after Tottenham’s final-day win over Leicester City, Bale revealed he already knew his next move, but added that revealing it now would “cause chaos”.

His surprising revelation sparked wild rumours in Spain, claiming that the Wales international is set to retire after the delayed European Championships have concluded this summer, although well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano has already rubbished those suggestions.

However, Bale’s future still remains unclear, and it’s led to speculation over where the Southampton academy graduate will ply his trade next season.

Bent believes Liverpool could be an option for the four-time Champions League winner as the Anfield outfit aim to recover from an extremely difficult campaign.

“Bale, with the wages he’s on, is going to have to take a massive cut,” Bent told TalkSPORT on Tuesday, as per the Liverpool Echo.

“Man City wouldn’t (sign him), Man United probably wouldn’t. Liverpool? Potentially they may be in for Bale.”

The Madrid man struggled for regular game time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium throughout Jose Mourinho’s tenure, but still managed to score an impressive 16 goals in all competitions, laying on a further three assists for his teammate.

Nevertheless, while Bale is still undoubtedly a top-class talent on his day, he’s not the answer to Liverpool’s attacking problems.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino suffered from a season-long loss of form in 2020/21, resulting in the normally destructive duo bagging a combined 20 Premier League goals.

For a side with ambitions to win the title year in year out, that figure is nowhere near good enough but the likelihood of Bale improving it in the long term is extremely unlikely.

Mane, Firmino and Mohamed Salah will be 29 years old when next season starts, meaning the unpredictability and vibrancy that youthful legs bring to a football team will be required at Liverpool in order to return them to their winning ways, not Bale and his £650,000-per-week wages.

Director of football Michael Edwards must avoid the temptation to bring in a star name for a quick fix and remain faithful to the transfer strategy that brought so much success to the Merseyside outfit in the first place.

Rob Lee thinks West Ham won’t finish fourth

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee has revealed that he believes his former club West Ham will come up just short in their pursuit to finish in the top four.

After last season’s relegation battle, nobody had the Hammers down to make a serious push to qualify for the Champions League, but after some smart signings and consistency in team selection, David Moyes has put them in a great position.

The arrival of Jesse Lingard from Manchester United in January has further boosted the Hammers’ efforts, especially during Michail Antonio’s latest injury setback, with the England international netting nine goals and notching four assists in the 11 Premier League games he’s played so far.

Speaking on why he thinks West Ham won’t finish in the top four but how it could change the club if they qualify for the Champions League, Lee said exclusively to FFC:

“Yeah, for West Ham to finish there would be an unbelievable achievement but I think they’ll fall short. I hope I’m wrong because it would be great for them.

“It will give them great pulling power if they finish there to bring in some really talented players, because for the top players that’s the pinnacle of their playing career if they make the Champions League.”

Moyes was brought in last season to keep the Hammers in the Premier League, much like in 2018 when he was not offered an extension despite guiding them to safety.

The Hammers are currently in a battle with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for fourth place and the last Champions League spot, and trail the 4th-placed Blues by three points with five games remaining.
