England players need more first-class county cricket – Boycott

Geoff Boycott has said the ECB needs to schedule County Championship games during the course of a home Test series to enable batsmen from the national team return to their counties and work on any weaknesses in the first-class format

Siddhartha Talya01-Sep-2010Geoff Boycott, the former England opener, has said the ECB needs to schedule County Championship games during the course of a home Test series to enable national players to return to their counties and work on any weaknesses in the first-class format. Several England batsmen, including Kevin Pietersen, struggled for form during the recently-concluded Test series against Pakistan and Boycott claimed that was a major worry ahead of the Ashes.”The England players play so much international cricket that it’s almost impossible to play any County Championship games in between matches,” Boycott said on Cricinfo’s fortnightly audio show . “Pietersen is one of England’s players who plays everything. The fixtures for four-day matches in England are so badly arranged that the England players, even when they get a space between Test matches, they can’t get matches with their counties, i.e four-day cricket matches.”They find that when there’s a week off between Test matches, they find their counties are playing a 40-over match or a Twenty20, which is not ideal. It’s not the best form of practice.”Since the start of 2006, Pietersen has played just one non-England first-class match while Paul Collingwood, another batsman who’s involved in all three formats, has represented Durham in just four four-day games. That pair averaged 23.33 and 19.83 respectively in the four Tests against Pakistan. Those few who have had an opportunity, Boycott said, have been able to show the benefits.”The only ones in the England team that can play County Championship fixtures are the guys who are not picked for the international ODIs,” he said. “It’s no coincidence that the two guys who played best for England in the series against Pakistan have been Jonathan Trott and wicketkeeper Matt Prior.”Now they didn’t play in England’s ODIs against Bangladesh and Australia, so there was a big period when they went back to their counties and batted well for them. They could take their time and play properly out in the middle. Many of the [other] England batsmen are playing poorly. It’s a big worry for the Ashes.”The solution, according to Boycott, was to schedule the Championship fixtures in between Tests where there was a reasonable gap. “There are periods when England play two Tests back-to-back, where you can’t return to your counties. But there are periods when there are nine days before the next Test. So if they organise the fixtures in that period where all the nine counties play Championship matches, then any batsman or bowler who felt he needed more practice could go back and play a proper four-day match.”England host India and Sri Lanka next summer but Boycott doubted the ECB would adopt a change in approach by giving precedence to first-class games over limited-overs. “They are so besotted, are the ECB, with making sure they have a four-to-six-week window to play Twenty20 cricket – about three matches a week for every county. It’s difficult then to fit Championship matches in,” he said.”They’re only interested in making money through one-day cricket. They think they can make Twenty20 in England like the IPL in India and they can’t. We have 60 million people in England but there are a billion people in India who’re nuts about cricket. So there is a bigger catchment area in all the cities to watch. It’s never going to happen [in England].”

Celtic struck gold with Turnbull transfer

Celtic have not been shy when it comes to signing players from their fellow Scottish clubs, either on loan or on permanent deals.

One player that the Hoops signed from a fellow Premiership side in recent memory who has turned out to be a great bit of business is David Turnbull.

In August 2020, Celtic struck a deal with Motherwell for the signing of the midfielder, 14 months after a previous deal for him between the two clubs collapsed.

Since arriving at Parkead, the 22-year-old – who is currently picking up £14k-per-week according to Salary Sport – has already racked up 70 appearances for the Hoops across all competitions, scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists in the process, highlighting how important he is to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

With five goals and four assists to his name in 19 league appearances this season, the midfielder has also shown in his overall performances how important he is for the team. WhoScored list him as the highest-rated player in Postecoglou’s current squad with a rating of 7.66/10, which also makes him the second-highest rated player in the entire Scottish top flight.

In January 2021, just a few months after becoming a Celtic player, Transfermarkt had Turnbull’s market value listed as £1.62m. It now stands at £5.85m, making him the second-most valuable player at the club and also showing a massive increase of 261% based on what he’s delivered for the Hoops on the pitch in terms of his goal contributions and overall performances.

Labelled a “phenomenal” player by Alan Hutton, Turnbull has certainly shown why the club were right to reignite their interest in him and finally secure a deal with Motherwell for the midfield maestro.

If the 22-year-old can keep delivering solid displays and add further goal contributions to his record for the campaign – especially in their next league game against Rangers once the current international break concludes – then he will definitely be seen as a big reason as to why the Hoops could be getting their hands on the league trophy by the end of the season.

Charlotte Edwards, the England women’s captain, has said the return of Sarah Taylor and Claire Taylor to the squad is a huge boost in her team’s attempt to defend the World Twenty20 title. Both batsmen were among the top ten run-getters in the competition in 2009. England were beaten by West Indies in a Twenty20 series in November last year, and Edwards acknowledged that home advantage meant the hosts were strong contenders in this year’s tournament.”We have obviously really missed her [Claire Taylor’s] experience more than anything and we also missed Sarah Taylor as well,” Edwards said in an interview with the ICC. “They are two of our top four batters. If any side loses two of their top batters they would struggle. It would leave a hole and we are really looking forward to getting them back on board.”Edwards said the defeat to West Indies last year, in the context of the World Twenty20, had helped them prepare better than other teams for the competition. “We are really excited having been there in November as we saw what the conditions are going to be like and I think we actually want to be a step ahead of most of the teams,” she said. “I think I misread the conditions of the West Indies when we were there in November. They had quite slow wickets and actually at Warner Park the outfield is not that quick, so I guess it is going to be different strategy that we need to put in place now.”West Indies, Edwards said, have improved considerably and she tipped them to be the surprise team of the tournament. “I think it’s just going to be Australia, New Zealand and India but having seen the West Indies and how they played in St Kitts in November I think they are going to be real threat to all the teams,” she said. “They are on home soil as well and they have shown they can play some fantastic cricket. They are always improving year on year – they could be a surprise team for the tournament.”When asked to name the players she thought were the ones to watch out for, Edwards said: “Deandra Dottin is going to be a key player for the West Indies. I think she is an awesome talent. What I’ve seen of her with both bat and ball has been really exceptional and l have been really impressed by her. Having been in India recently, I think their young spinner Gouhar Sultana is likely to be a real threat. All the teams are playing really good cricket and the Australians have the likes of Shelley Nitschke in the form of her life.”The women’s World Twenty20 gets underway on May 5.

Habibul Bashar retires from all forms of the game

Habibul Bashar, the former captain of the Bangladesh team, today announced his retirement from all forms of cricket

Cricinfo staff22-Mar-2010Habibul Bashar, the former Bangladesh captain, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.”It has been a terrific journey for me and after two decades of international, first class and cub cricket I feel I have reached the end of the road. The Port City League (PCL) T20 in Sharjah next week will be my last competition as a player,” Bashar wrote in his letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board.”I thank the BCB for giving me the honour of captaining Bangladesh and for the support throughout my career,” Bashar wrote. “I will cherish the memories of my time in the Bangladesh dressing room and my heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the players, coaches, team officials and staff I have had the privilege of knowing and working with.”As I bid bye I also feel excitement at the way the Bangladesh cricket team is progressing. I wish them every success.”Bashar played fifty Tests for Bangladesh, including their inaugural Test in 2000. He went on to lead the side in 18 Tests, including one victory and four draws. His most memorable moments as captain came in 2005 when Bangladesh stunned Australia in an ODI in Cardiff, and in the 2007 World Cup where his side relegated India to enter the Super Eights. As a batsman, Bashar massively under-achieved for a man of his talent, often succumbing to a propensity to hook, and finished with a Test average of 30.87. He was dropped from the national side after a protracted run of poor form and headed to the ICL in 2008, where he captained the Dhaka Warriors. The BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal led the tributes in praise of Bashar. “We are indebted to this fantastic cricketer who had instilled belief in the players and inspired them to perform.”Under his able leadership Bangladesh had tasted the first Test victory and had progressed to the Super Eight stages of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. With his batting he showed others the way to dominate and score at international level. We hope that he will continue to be associated with Bangladesh cricket after his retirement,” he said.

Paul Pogba won’t leave in January

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is set to remain at the club beyond the January transfer window after becoming enthused at the prospect of working under Ralf Rangnick.

What’s the story?

The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and has so far rejected the club’s offer of a new deal, opting instead to wait until the end of the season to weigh up his options.

Pogba’s current situation would allow him to reach a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club over the coming months, though, ensuring his United exit six years after re-signing for his boyhood club.

However, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the World Cup-winning midfielder is not expected to enter talks with any interested party, instead focussing on his return from injury and working under Rangnick at United.

Ornstein’s report states that: “The midfielder continues to rehabilitate in Dubai but is said to be enthused by the idea of working under Rangnick, having received positive feedback about the 63-year-old from contacts in the game.

“The Athletic is told that he is highly unlikely to do so (sign with another side in January) as he focuses on football and considers all options heading towards the summer.”

Ralf Rangnick will be elated

News that Pogba is set to remain at the club at least until the end of the campaign will leave Rangnick feeling elated, given his importance to the side.

The engine room operator has already racked up seven assists in his 13 appearances for the Red Devils throughout 2021/22 and his underlying numbers are also indicative of his influence over proceedings.

As per WhoScored, Pogba has averaged 1.7 key passes per league game this term, two dribbles and 4.8 long balls, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates.

With Rangnick set to implement a new style and philosophy upon the 20-time English champions, he will need his best players available, and Ornstein’s latest revelation will be warmly welcomed by everyone at the Theatre of Dreams. This is evidently a huge boost for United as they aim to hit the ground running under their new tactician.

Journalist gives Kalvin Phillips update

Leeds United should expect offers from Liverpool and Manchester United for Kalvin Phillips, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Phillips linked with Leeds exit

The 25-year-old has matured into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders in the last year or so, also becoming a regular starter for England.

Phillips’ form has seen him linked with an exit from Elland Road numerous times in recent weeks and months, as he potentially looks for a fresh challenge in his career.

The £36m-rated Englishman’s current Whites deal expires in the summer of 2024 but there has been no sign of an extension being agreed.

The Latest: O’Rourke gives Phillips transfer update

Both Liverpool and United are thought to be among Phillips’ potential suitors, and speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke said that Leeds should brace themselves for offers in the near future. He outlined:

“Kalvin Phillips will definitely have offers for him. I think he is probably one of the best midfielders in Europe.

“The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are both looking to strengthen in that area.”

The Verdict: Final season at Elland Road?

In an ideal world, Phillips would see out the rest of his career at Elland Road, considering that he has been a stalwart of the Marcelo Bielsa era, making 226 appearances for the club in total. However, the harsh reality is that he may feel he has outgrown Leeds, with Liverpool and Manchester United both more likely to guarantee Champions League football and silverware.

Granted, a move to either club likely wouldn’t go down well with Whites supporters, but Phillips may feel that he warrants going wherever he wants, considering the service he has given to the Yorkshire outfit.

Given his level of loyalty, it wouldn’t necessarily be a shock if he signs a new deal at Leeds, but fans should be prepared for the worst next summer.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly eyeing up a January move for one player. Find out who it is here.

James Franklin worried by pain in left knee

Allrounder worried his career could be in trouble once again after experiencing pain in his left knee during a tour game against Pakistan last week

Cricinfo staff27-Nov-2009New Zealand allrounder James Franklin is worried that his injury-hit career could be in trouble once again after he experienced pain in his left knee during a tour game against Pakistan last week.”It’s come like a bolt out of the blue, so naturally I’m pretty nervous because my knees have never been the greatest,” Franklin told the . “The last thing I want to do is spend a long time out of the game again, especially as I’m really enjoying my cricket at the moment. I’ve been happy with my form over the last little while so I don’t need a potential setback like this.”Franklin had patella-tendon surgery on his right knee in November 2007, followed by nine months of rehabilitation. This time, he may have injured the patella tendon in his left knee and ultrasound tests confirmed inflammation in the tendon. Franklin was prescribed a series of blood injections into the tendon to help speed up his recovery. In the past he has been through the same routine for his right knee, but the injections were administered too late to prevent surgery in that case.New Zealand are still recovering from the loss of allrounder Jacob Oram, whose retirement from Tests was forced by injuries. After two years on the sidelines, Franklin made a comeback to the New Zealand Test side in the home series against West Indies late last year. He tried to re-establish himself as an allrounder and scored a fifty against India in Napier.”I haven’t given up hope. I might even try and have a bat in the next day or so and if that goes well I might be able to squeeze a game in for Wellington, possibly just as a batsman, and then go from there,” Franklin said.
