Australia move forward with reverse-swing

The coach Tim Nielsen has said Australia’s bowlers were too slow to adapt to the conditions during the series loss to India

The coach Tim Nielsen has said Australia’s bowlers were too slow to adapt to the conditions during the series loss to India, but believes they are now more aware of the right time to switch tactics. Australia tried for conventional swing for too long instead of working on reverse during their trip to India, but they should have a chance to show their new skills at the WACA during the first Test against South Africa, which starts next week.”We will change our plans quickly if we need to,” Nielsen said in the Sydney Morning Herald. “We were too slow to adapt in India. We took too long trying to get the ball to swing conventionally, rather than just accepting what was happening and working on the reverse.”Nielsen said the tactic, which also upset Australia in England in 2005, had become a “normal mode of attack”. “Teams have had to change their thought processes a little bit to embrace it,” he said. “There’s no point bowling it bolt straight for 20 or 30 overs when there’s no conventional swing about.”Nielsen said movement through the air would be a factor at the WACA, especially if the Fremantle doctor breeze was around. The selectors are due to announce the squad for the first Test on Monday, with Jason Krejza a concern due to the ankle injury he sustained before the second match against New Zealand last month.Despite Australia’s changing side, Nielsen said the players were capable of standing up to South Africa and he has talked tough in the lead-up to the series. “I don’t want people thinking that because we’re a young team we can’t take it to them,” he said. “[South Africa] are a young, aggressive and competitive team, with a good fast bowling line-up and an equally good top six.”They will be a good challenge for us, but I know we can match it with them. These six Tests will be a real good battle.”

Rain causes another washout

It was Ireland’s second consecutive game to be washed out and they will now have to wait for the result of Thursday’s game between Zimbabwe and Kenya to know whether they are through to Saturday’s final

Cricinfo staff22-Oct-2008For the second day in a row, heavy rain didn’t allow any cricket in the tri-series in Nairobi. It was Ireland’s second consecutive game to be washed out and they will now have to wait for the result of Thursday’s game between Zimbabwe and Kenya to determine whether they are through to Saturday’s final. The forecast for Thursday is for heavy showers and in the event of another washout, all three teams will finish on nine points but Zimbabwe and Kenya will go through on the basis of net run-rate. Unless there is a tie or a no-result on Thursday, Ireland will make it to the title clash.

Saints make late Spence bid

Southampton made a late bid for Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence on Transfer Deadline Day, according to The Northern Echo.

The Lowdown: Southampton’s busy summer

The Saints ended up having a very busy summer during the summer window, bringing in several young players with potential to develop at St. Mary’s.

They made no less than six signings (Transfermarkt), and it seems they were looking to add more down to the wire on Tuesday.

The Latest: Saints make Spence bid

As per this latest report, the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit made a late bid to snatch Spence from Boro.

They weren’t the only side looking to capture the right-back, though. Leicester and Nottingham Forest were also said to have tried their luck, but nothing materialised.

The Verdict: Needed?

So far at the Riverside Stadium, Spence has made 70 appearances, scoring two goals (Transfermarkt). Quite clearly, he is highly talented if there was such a push for his services on the final day of the window – he was also called “exceptional” by former boss Jonathan Woodgate (gazettelive.co.uk).

However, it is worth questioning whether he is player the Saints really needed.

During this transfer window, the Saints captured Valentino Livramento from Chelsea, and Ralph Hasenhuttl already has Kyle Walker-Peters in the same position.

Not only that, Yan Valery’s rumoured move to Olympiacos didn’t go through (Football Insider). As a result, they have three players in that position – do they really need another? The club’s failure to capture £1.8m-valued Spence (Transfermarkt) may well be a blessing in disguise.

In other news, Southampton fans were livid with this man’s new contract.

Serie A expert drops bold claim on Spurs and Arsenal target

Serie A expert Conor Clancy insists that clubs from across Europe should be trying to sign Andrea Belotti this summer as he continues to be linked with an exit from Torino.

The Italy international is entering the final year of his contract with the Serie A club.

As a result, he has been linked with a number of clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Newcastle United.

Belotti has been a prolific goalscorer during his time with Torino, scoring a total of 105 goals in 228 games for the club.

Last season, he netted 13 goals and laid on seven assists in 35 games for the club and was a member of the Italy squad that won Euro 2020 this summer.

Clancy believes he should move on from Torino to join another club in this transfer window, and has urged sides from across Europe to table a bid.

Clancy, who is the editor-in-chief of Forza Italian Football, said: “It’s sad that he’s still with Torino, particularly from the perspective of someone who likes the Italian national team as well.

“If Belotti was playing at a good team, he’d be starting for Italy and probably scoring more goals but Belotti’s great, everyone in Europe should be trying to sign him.”

Liam Kennedy fears Newcastle atmosphere could turn toxic

Shields Gazette reporter Liam Kennedy fears the atmosphere could turn toxic if Newcastle United fail to bring in new recruits before the transfer window closes.

The Magpies are yet to bolster their squad with acquisitions despite the start of the Premier League season being less than a week away.

Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock has been boss Steve Bruce’s top transfer target all summer, having scored eight goals in 14 appearances during his loan spell at St James’ Park last season.

While Newcastle initially hoped to make Willock’s move permanent, they have since explored the possibility of another temporary deal being struck.

However, the Magpies’ hopes of landing the former England under-21 international, who became the first player to find the back of the net in seven consecutive Premier League fixtures since Alan Shearer during his loan spell, suffered a blow when Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insisted the 21-year-old is part of his plans.

Newcastle have yet to turn their attentions elsewhere and Kennedy admits Magpies fans could become disgruntled.

He told Football FanCast: “If they get off to a bad start this season, no signings come in or there are any more delays with the takeover, I think it could erupt.

“Newcastle United can become very toxic. The year when Newcastle got relegated the first time under Mike Ashley, I remember how toxic it got and that really pushed onto the pitch.

“The big fear is whether it will become toxic this time. Looking at social media, which isn’t always the best judge, it does have the feel that it could turn toxic very quickly.”

West Brom advised on Pereira demands

West Bromwich Albion legend Ally Robertson says it ‘would be wrong’ to sell Matheus Pereira for any less than £25million.

The lowdown

One of Pereira’s advisers, Jolden Vergette, told the Daily Express this week that a chance for Pereira to remain in the Premier League following West Brom’s relegation ‘will present itself’.

Pereira was a shining light for the Baggies last season in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

The Brazilian scored twice as many goals (12) and provided twice as many assists (six) as any of his team-mates (via BBC Sport).

He directly contributed to 49% of West Brom’s Premier League goals last season.

Pereira only joined on a four-year permanent deal last summer after West Brom agreed a £9million fee with Sporting Lisbon (via BBC Sport).

The latest

Robertson, who played for the club between 1969 and 1986, says West Brom must extract a high enough fee to significantly improve their squad.

Their most expensive departure is currently Salomon Rondon, who joined Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang for £16.44million.

“If we are going to sell Pereira, we have to then go out and buy three or four players to make the squad better,” he told the Express and Star.

“If we do that then I won’t have a problem.

“If an offer in the region of £25million or £30million comes in then I can understand us accepting that if it’s to give the manager funds to strengthen,” he continued.

“And we have to sell him for that amount, selling him for £20million or £15million would be wrong.”

The verdict

There’s no doubt Pereira deserves to be playing at Premier League level. The extent of West Brom’s reliance on him last season is pretty staggering.

West Brom must now be torn between the player’s evident quality and the investment opportunities that would arise from his sale – Valerien Ismael would have the chance to truly leave his imprint on the team through well-suited acquisitions.

If Aston Villa were to lose £100million-rated Jack Grealish to Manchester City, perhaps they would formalise their reported interest in Pereira.

And they’d certainly have the means to meet a lofty asking price if he was heading there to replace their current skipper.

In other news, Kevin Campbell issued a glowing verdict on this potential Baggies target.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Danny Ings comments from Ralph Hasenhuttl

Many Aston Villa fans have been reacting excitedly on Twitter following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s comments on potential interest in Southampton forward Danny Ings.

Known to be attracting attention from Aston Villa and Tottenham this summer, the England international has been attracting increasing speculation surrounding his future following his decision to turn down a new four-year contract at St Mary’s earlier this month [Sky Sports].

Breaking his silence on the matter, Southampton coach Hasenhuttl added fuel to the fire, claiming that “it’s not a perfect situation” for Ings or the club that he snubbed the Saints’ contract offer [BBC].

The 28-year-old enjoyed an excellent 2020/21 campaign, with 13 goals and four assists in 33 appearances [Transfermarkt] following on from a 25-goal season before that, illustrating that he can be a consistently reliable scorer.

In light of these comments from Hasenhuttl, many Aston Villa diehards took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the state of play surrounding Ings.
