Tottenham Hotspur forward and South Korea star Son Heung-Min has joined Los Angeles FC on a permanent transfer through 2027 with club options through June 2029. The club officially introduced him at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Son will occupy an international roster slot and will be eligible to play upon receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). The 33-year-old reportedly becomes the most expensive transfer in MLS history, surpassing Atlanta United's deal of Emmanuel Latte Lath earlier this season.

reported that the fee is approximately $26.5 million.

Over 10 years with Tottenham, the South Korea international scored 173 goals across all competitions, registered 101 assists, and became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021-22.

"Just because I had a successful career in Europe doesn't mean I will here," Son said in Los Angeles. "So I want to see this as a new challenge and do my best and all that. I want to give back to the ownership and the team and the club, and do the best I can and leave when the time comes as a legend of the club.

"I'm here to win, and I will perform, and I will definitely show you something exciting. I will definitely show some exciting football, and we definitely will have success."

LAFC management praised Son's track record, and noted the impact he can have for the team and in the community.

“Sonny is a global icon and one of the most dynamic and accomplished players in world football,” said LAFC co-president and GM John Thorrington. “His ambition, ability, and character align perfectly with our values at LAFC. We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career. Sonny is a proven winner and a world-class individual, and we are confident he will elevate our club and inspire our community – both on and off the pitch.”

Son becomes the latest global superstar to sign for LAFC, following in the footsteps of former Tottenham teammates Gareth Bale and Hugo Lloris, the latter of whom he is reuniting in Los Angeles.

“I’m incredibly proud to be joining LAFC, a club with big ambitions in one of the most iconic sports cities in the world,” Son said. “Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I am here to help write the next chapter. I’m excited for this new challenge in MLS. I have come to L.A. to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans. I cannot wait to get started.”

Son will undoubtedly pull in viewers given his popularity as captain of the Korean national team, especially given the fact that nearly 30 percent of the nation’s Korean population of 1.8 million live in California.

"I've obviously played with former teammates like Hugo Lloris, Gareth Bale, and national team player Kim Moon-Hwan also played for LAFC," Son said. "And the conversations that I've had with them were great because also Hugo was helping and advising about how great Los Angeles is.

"And as a Korean, to know that Koreatown here in Los Angeles has so many Koreans here in this country, I'm very proud to be part of the club and the city here. We'll make them proud with my performance and do the best I can to represent the Koreans in Koreatown and here in LA."

Internationally, Son has scored 51 goals and represented South Korea in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups and four AFC Asian Cups. In 2018, he led South Korea to a gold medal at the Asian Games.

“Bringing Sonny to LAFC and to our city has been a dream of ours for several years,” LAFC lead managing owner Bennett Rosenthal said. “My partners and I are huge admirers of Sonny the player and Sonny the person. His signing is a statement of our commitment to excellence on the pitch and our ambition to continue to build our reputation as a world class club on the global football stage. Sonny as a player and person will inspire not only our fans in LA and the incredible community in Southern California, but millions of fans around the world.”

Joe Root century sets up Yorkshire victory push against Glamorgan

Northeast and Ingram resist but visitors still not save from innings defeat at Headingley

Glamorgan 221 (B Root 51, Bess 4-25, Moriarty 4-74) and 171 for 3 (Northeast 46*, Ingram 43*) trail Yorkshire 519 for 7 dec (Bean 173, J Root 156, Brook 65) by 127 runs Joe Root completed a superb day three 156 as Yorkshire pushed for a Vitality County Championship victory over Glamorgan at Headingley.Root followed Fin Bean’s lead, the opener who scored his first century of the season late on day two and went on to make 173 in Yorkshire’s imposing first-innings 519 for seven declared.Glamorgan then reached close on 171 for three from 60 overs in their second innings, with unbeaten Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram approaching half-centuries. The visitors trail by 127.Root, 92 overnight, posted a classy century – his second in as many Division Two games – and shared 265 for the third wicket with Bean through until mid-morning as the hosts replied to a 221 total on a used pitch.Harry Brook then piled further pressure on the beleaguered visiting attack with two sixes in 65, though he fell to one-time England Test leg-spinner Mason Crane to spark the declaration in the first half of the afternoon.Crane finished with a consolatory five for 152 from 23.1 overs.Despite batting on a deteriorating pitch, Yorkshire’s innings advanced at a rate of just over 5.5 runs per over. They were helped out as a depleted Glamorgan attack erred with the ball.Last year, Glamorgan had much the better of an early season draw here when Australian seamer Michael Neser took a hat-trick. But this attack looks very different to the one which took the field exactly 12 months ago.Neser has not returned to the club this season, while fellow seamer Timm van der Gugten is injured. Another quick Harry Podmore is also sidelined and all-rounder Dan Douthwaite rested.Bean’s highest first-class score came as he batted with more aggression than usual, the left-handed opener making a conscious effort to put pressure on the bowlers. In January, the 22-year-old had spent time in India working on batting against spin as part of an England Lions batting camp.On this evidence, it was 10 days well spent given the spinning nature of this pitch, him hitting 24 fours and five sixes in 173 balls. Four of his five sixes were hit over long-on or straight off spin. For Root, he backed up last weekend’s 119 in the draw against Derbyshire with a typically classy innings. He reached this century off 100 balls in the opening 15 minutes of play and went on to hit 21 fours in 165 balls.Bean, having been dropped at first slip on his overnight 140, was the first wicket to fall, bowled playing back to Crane, before Root was trapped lbw by seamer James Harris.Crane is on a season-long loan from Hampshire in a bid to get more regular cricket. He took four of his five wickets on day three and will be most pleased that his last three wickets came at a cost of only one run, including Jonny Tattersall stumped for a confident 55 and Brook caught at backward point. The hosts declared immediately.Glamorgan’s openers Eddie Byrom and Billy Root started their second innings brightly, sharing 56 inside 18 overs. But both fell either side of tea as the score slipped to 72 for two. Root played on to Dan Moriarty’s left-arm spin for 35 before Byrom was caught at deep square-leg on the sweep against Dom Bess’s off-spin.Kiran Carlson was then unfortunate to be run out having struck a drive against Bess against Joe Root at silly point. The ball ricocheted back to wicketkeeper Tattersall, who removed the bails with the batter scrambling to make his ground – 93 for three.Thankfully for the visitors, Northeast and Ingram steadied the ship and held firm for the rest of the day and will resume on 46 and 43 respectively. They will, however, likely need to significantly build on their 78-run partnership to give Glamorgan a chance of avoiding defeat.

Jos Buttler set to miss Cardiff T20I on paternity leave

Moeen set to deputise, but captain expected to travel to World Cup as planned on Friday

Matt Roller27-May-2024Jos Buttler is set to miss England’s third T20I against Pakistan on paternity leave.Buttler travelled home to London after captaining England to a 23-run victory at Edgbaston on Saturday, giving them a 1-0 lead in the four-match series after the opening match at Leeds was washed out. He and his wife Louise are expecting their third child imminently. He missed Monday afternoon’s training session in Cardiff and is considered unlikely to feature in Tuesday evening’s match. It is not yet clear whether he will return in time to play in the final match of the series, at The Oval on Thursday night, but at this stage it appears that he will travel to the Caribbean for the T20 World Cup with the rest of the squad on Friday. While the news is disruptive to England in the short term, Buttler’s absence should ensure that he is with the team throughout their World Cup campaign, which begins next Tuesday (June 4) in Barbados against Scotland. He had previously confirmed he would be at the birth regardless, raising the prospect that he could miss a group-stage match.Related

Moeen Ali is England’s vice-captain, and last week played down the significance of a leadership change. “Obviously if it happens, then it’s a great honour – as it always is,” Moeen said. “I’ll be fine. Nothing will change too much: it’s just taking over from what he’s doing and then when he comes back, he takes over.”Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games. For me, it’s just whatever will happen, will happen. [Deputising] is not really difficult, to be honest with you, because we speak often, me and Jos. We talk about other things, the team, and all that. We’re on the same page anyway.”Buttler underpinned England’s innings at Edgbaston on Saturday, hitting 84 off 51 balls while opening the batting. In his absence, the most likely change to their side would see Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow moving up a spot each and Ben Duckett batting at No. 4, though they could instead add another bowling allrounder to their side in Sam Curran. There is also a case for Duckett to replace Buttler at the top of the order, which would give England’s first-choice batting line-up the chance to bat in their likely roles for the World Cup. Jacks looked in fine touch on Saturday, hitting 37 off 23 balls from No. 3, but admitted on Monday that he is still “learning on the job” having opened for most of his T20 career.”It’s no lie that I’m new to batting at No. 3,” he said. “The biggest thing I’ve found is just the uncertainty of not knowing when I’m going in: obviously if I’m opening, it’s 0 for 0 every time, bowling first or second. I know exactly what’s going to happen: I’m facing the swinging ball or, if it’s a spinner opening, I know what the field is going to be.”[Batting at No. 3] is just a different scenario each time, which is more of a mental thing. I know I’ve got the game and the technique. It’s just adjusting to coming in outside the Powerplay, coming in the fifth over: when do I put my foot on the pedal? It’s about figuring out what I need to do at the right time… it’s all about the team, not about yourself.”Mark Wood had a long bowl before Saturday’s match with his knee heavily strapped, and could come into contention in Cardiff if England opt to take a cautious approach to Jofra Archer’s fitness following his international comeback. Despite England being keen to give Tom Hartley his T20I debut before the World Cup, ESPNcricinfo understands he won’t be involved in this contest. In any case, Tuesday night’s match is under threat from the weather, though Jacks suggested that playing a shortened match could serve as useful preparation for the World Cup. “Preparation is not always ideal, but we have to be adaptable and T20 is all about thinking fast on your feet, and assessing the situation as quickly as possible,” he said. “We’ll be ready for anything.”

Gyokeres fired Amorim's Sporting CP to the Portuguese title in 2023-24 and then scored 39 league goals last season as his side retained their crown. Gyokeres struggled to catch fire in his first stint in English football after joining Brighton & Hove Albion's academy but he had more success at Coventry in the Championship, moving to Sporting in the summer of 2023 on the back of scoring 21 goals in the Championship. Amorim made it clear that Gyokeres will have to adapt to the increased physicality in the Premier League.

Aí começa a disputa.
