West Ham now in talks to sign £325k-p/w attacker with 151 career assists

With transfer deadline day less than two weeks away, West Ham United are now reportedly in talks to sign an international star with an illustrious career.

West Ham still need attacking additions

Take Jarrod Bowen out of this West Ham attack and things suddenly look incredibly concerning for Graham Potter’s side. The 28-year-old remains their beacon of hope going forward and arguably their only reliable goalscorer despite spending big last year and in years prior. And that was exposed for all to see against Sunderland. The Hammers were blunt whilst the Black Cats put them to the sword on the opening day to secure a stunning 3-0 victory.

West Ham now launch first approach to sign Barcelona "genius" in £26m deal

He’s a wanted man…

Whilst there’s still an incredibly long way to go in the Premier League campaign, that opening day defeat should have sparked plenty of concerns for everyone involved at the London Stadium, who still desperately need attacking additions before the transfer window slams shut.

Just where West Ham go from that opening day humiliation is the big question. Names such as Jamie Vardy have been mentioned among a number of targets as of late and it’s clear that the Hammers are targeting experience. Alongside the former Leicester City forward, a serial-winning attacker has also emerged as a late option for Potter’s side.

West Ham hold talks to sign Raheem Sterling

According to former Premier League scout Mick Brown, West Ham have now held talks to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea this summer. The experienced England international spent last season on loan without ever truly making his mark and is now back at Stamford Bridge among the players in desperate need of a late move.

Brown told Football Insider: “His agent has been speaking to a few clubs, in England and abroad, and I believe West Ham are one they have spoken to.

“That move would make sense because he’s worked with the manager before and they’ve got that relationship there already. I expect he will look and think he can still get the best out of him.”

At 30 years old, Sterling still arguably has plenty left to offer even after struggling at Arsenal last season. In a West Ham attack which desperately lacks quality, the former Manchester City man could take charge to finally offer Potter another reliable outlet alongside Bowen.

Whilst his reported £325,000-a-week salary is an undeniable hurdle for West Ham to negotiate their way past, Sterling represents the attacking upgrade that they should push to sign before the deadline arrives.

Jose Mourinho told Benfica is the right 'calibre' for him by Real Madrid president as coach reveals message from his former team

Jose Mourinho revealed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez sent a message to him upon his return to Benfica. The Portuguese head coach said that his former boss told him he was happy to see him return "to a club of your calibre", reminding fans once again of the mutual love and admiration shared between the two men.

  • Mourinho has returned to Benfica after 25 years

After being sacked by Fenerbahce for failing to qualify for the league phase of this season's Champions League, Mourinho marked an immediate return to coaching by signing for Benfica, the club where it all began for 'The Special One' in 2000. Mourinho will remain with Benfica until June 2027, although a surprise 'break clause' has been inserted in the contract which will allow both sides to part ways earlier than the expiry of the contract.

    Florentino's special gesture to Mourinho

Right after he returned to Benfica, Mourinho received messages from Perez, the president of his former club. "I'd like to say that President Florentino sent me a message saying, 'I'm very happy that you've returned to a club of your calibre,' and to hear this from the president of Real Madrid himself," Mourinho revealed.

  • A reunion with Real Madrid in January

Mourinho arrived at the Bernabeu in 2010 after firing Inter to a historic continental treble. In his three years as Los Blancos' head coach, the Portuguese won three titles, including La Liga in 2011-12 and the Copa del Rey in 2010-11. In 2013, Perez urged Mourinho to prolong his stay at Madrid, but the 62-year-old felt his time was up. Now, Mourinho will face the Merengues for the first time over 12 years after parting ways with them, when Benfica welcome Xabi Alonso's side at the Estadio da Luz in the final league phase matchday of the Champions League in January.

    Mourinho's next managerial assignment

The Setubal-born manager faced his first loss with Benfica on Tuesday as an own goal from Richard Rios was enough for his former side Chelsea to grab a win. This weekend, his troops will be up against Porto, with whom Mourinho won the Champions League in 2004.

Sullivan loves him: "Incredible" manager could replace Potter at West Ham

An “incredible” manager has now emerged as a contender to replace Graham Potter at West Ham United, it has been revealed.

Potter's future in doubt after yet another defeat

Potter would’ve been hoping that the surprise 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest before the international break could be a turning point, but his side once again came up short over the weekend, this time falling to a 3-0 defeat at home against Tottenham.

Speaking after his side’s third loss in four Premier League games, the West Ham boss said: “I understand because the scoreline is the scoreline and I understand why people are upset,”

“We are a new team and we have to stick together and focus on the things we’ve done well and see where we can improve.”

West Ham make offer for £14m Tottenham ace with January move now possible

The Hammers have made an approach to sign an “outstanding” player, who is keen on a move to a new Premier League club.

ByDominic Lund Sep 14, 2025

However, having been in charge since January and been given the opportunity to bring in his own players in the summer, it remains to be seen how much longer the Englishman can last, considering his record up to this point is extremely poor.

The 50-year-old has averaged just 0.96 points per match, and has the second-worst Premier League win percentage of any West Ham manager at just 27.3%.

As such, the Hammers’ hierarchy are now starting to run the rule over potential replacements, according to reporter Alan Nixon (via GiveMeSport), who states David Sullivan is an admirer of former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno was a huge success at The City Ground, meaning he has now emerged as a contender to replace Potter at West Ham, but they may have to move quickly, given that the 51-year-old is likely to be attracting interest courtesy of the job he did at Forest.

"Incredible" Nuno could be an ideal Potter replacement

At this stage, the Hammers are looking like serious relegation candidates, having lost three of their opening four games, which leaves them 18th in the Premier League table.

Consequently, it would make sense to bring in a manager with a proven track record of being able to transform struggling sides into European contenders, and that is exactly what the former Forest boss managed to do in his last job.

After taking over a Forest side that only narrowly avoided relegation the season prior, the Portuguese coach led them to the Europa League, and he was praised for the “incredible” job he did by Sky Sports’ Sam Obaseki, while also receiving plaudits from Fabrizio Romano.

Nuno could be an excellent appointment for West Ham, given that he is vastly experienced in the Premier League, having also managed Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Sullivan should move swiftly to ensure he wins the race.

Tottenham once had "the new Maradona" who Carragher said was "like watching Pirlo"

Tottenham Hotspur once had a talent hailed as “the new Diego Maradona”, who Jamie Carragher said was “like watching Pirlo”, due to the way in which he flourished in a deep-lying playmaker role.

Lack of creativity cost Tottenham against Bournemouth

Tottenham spent large parts of the summer transfer window chasing a new attacking midfielder, pursuing Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze before eventually getting a deal for Xavi Simons over the line.

However, the Dutchman, who has picked up a combined 20 assists over the last two Bundesliga seasons, wasn’t available for selection against AFC Bournemouth last time out, and Spurs created very few opportunities.

The Lilywhites were missing a player capable of taking the game by the scruff of the neck and creating something out of nothing, with Son Heung-min departing for LAFC in the summer, while Harry Kane has, of course, been a big miss ever since leaving two years ago.

During his time in north London, Kane received regular plaudits from the media, with some of the highest praise coming from David Ginola, who once said: “The new playmaker at Spurs is Harry Kane. He is like the new Diego Maradona now. Long passes, short passes, he has it all.”

Carragher was also left very impressed with the England captain’s ability to drop deep and create chances.

First refusal clause means Spurs can re-sign Kane

Tottenham are well-known to have a first refusal clause, which means they would hold an advantage in a future race for the 32-year-old, given that Bayern Munich would be forced to sell the striker to his former club if they matched another accepted offer.

£55k-a-week Tottenham star who hasn't impressed Frank "expected" to leave

There could be an imminent departure from N17…

ByDominic Lund Sep 7, 2025

Former Liverpool man Dietmar Hamann has also suggested this season could be the centre-forward’s last in Germany, saying: “I think Harry Kane has a clause that allows him to leave for a certain amount next summer. I believe the reason Bayern Munich wanted to bring Nick Woltemade in this summer was because many within the club think Kane wants to go back to England after the World Cup.”

Signing a player in their early thirties would normally be a gamble, but Kane is showing no signs of slowing down, having maintained a fantastic goal and assist record at Bayern ever since his arrival, making a flying start to the new campaign.

Rio Ferdinand played with Bebe but named England star his "worst teammate"

Rio Ferdinand may not have been teammates with Manchester United players who were knocked out of the first round of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby, but he did still share a dressing room with some frustrating figures.

Of course, when compared to Ruben Amorim’s current squad, some may say that the likes of Anderson and Bebe wouldn’t be bad options to turn to these days – that’s how bad things have become. But the reality is that, under Sir Alex Ferguson, both players were not up to the incredibly high standards set by Ferdinand and others in that Old Trafford dressing room.

Whilst Bebe was swiftly moved on at Manchester United, Anderson’s slow burn from one of the world’s best young players into a forgotten star is one that often frustrated Ferdinand.

Man Utd’s most embarrassing defeats since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford

The Red Devils have had multiple humiliating losses since 2013.

ByCharlie Smith Aug 28, 2025

The former centre-back said, when speaking on FIVE: “Anderson was a player that used to frustrate me sometimes. This kid won the Golden Boy, that everyone goes mad about now, he won it when he was at Porto, best young player in Europe.

“The kid was unreal talent-wise but we have a WhatsApp group we always talk about, where he gets hammered. We always appreciate his ability but we’re all frustrated that he didn’t probably apply himself like he could have, because if he did, he might not have got injured as much as he got.”

Manchester United's Anderson celebrates goal.

It also goes without saying that there were plenty more to forget alongside Anderson and Bebe. In the middle of a dressing room full of success, Diego Forlan also failed to live up to the hype – scoring just 17 goals in 98 appearances.

However, as disappointing as Forlan and Anderson were, and as poor as Bebe was, Ferdinand decided to name-drop an unexpected Manchester United legend as his “worse teammate”.

Ferdinand names Rooney as "worst teammate"

Out of all the transfer flops that came and went, it’s Wayne Rooney who’s taken the crown as Ferdinand’s worst teammate. Somehow, some way, the man with the most goals in Manchester United history has found himself with an unwanted title. But Ferdinand has his reasons, as the defender revealed to the Seven Meets Podcast in 2023.

The Manchester United dressing room were never shy when it came to airing their grievances. Perhaps that’s why they proved to be so successful. Although David Beckham and a certain football boot may have something to say about that.

Man Utd player ratings vs Chelsea: Anna Sandberg, that is brilliant! Sweden star scores a stunner as Marc Skinner's side end Blues' perfect start in engaging top-of-the-table draw

Manchester United and Chelsea both continued their unbeaten starts to the Women's Super League season as a stunning Anna Sandberg strike earned the Red Devils a well-deserved 1-1 draw against the champions, who dropped points for the first time this season. Wieke Kaptein scored an early opener for the Blues and both sides could have gone on to clinch victory in an entertaining encounter between the two early pace-setters.

Man United came into the game having never beaten Chelsea in the WSL, but had the better of much of the first half as they showed just why they have begun the new season unbeaten. Marc Skinner's Red Devils could have gone to the summit of the table with victory, and played like a team with a point to prove.

United striker Elisabeth Terland forced the game's first save early on, before Ella Toone freed Jess Park on the break but she could only clip the ball over. The early signs of encouragement were there, though, until Chelsea took the lead against the run of play in the ninth minute. It was a moment of undoubted quality. Catarina Macario back-heeled the ball into the onrushing Kaptein, who calmly passed the ball beyond Phallon Tullis-Joyce and into the back of the net.

The home side would soon be level, though, and what a goal it was. Receiving a knock-down from Toone, left-back Sandberg hit the ball first time on the volley and saw her strike nestle perfectly into the corner of the net. It was a goal which even the champions could do nothing about.

United were the better side for much of the second period, Fridolina Rolfo seeing a deflected strike rebound off the top of the crossbar while Toone struck just over on a couple of occasions. If any side would win, it looked like the Red Devils – until a couple of nervy moments late on, where Keira Walsh forced a smart save while Dominique Jansen caused a nervy moment for her goalkeeper. One final cross by Blues substitute Alyssa Thompson sailed agonisingly out of play and the referee blew the final whistle after an enthralling encounter.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce (7/10):

The Red Devils shot-stopper made several important saves, including one top-class stop from Wieke Kaptein in the first half which she had no right to make from point-blank range. Got down low to keep out Walsh, while sliding at the feet of Thompson to prevent the Blues striker getting in on goal after a defensive error.

Jayde Riviere (6/10):

Did her job admirably as Chelsea's forward line were frustrated. Her opposite number Aggie Beever-Jones ended her impressive five-game goalscoring streak, which is always a bonus for the full-back.

Maya Le Tissier (8/10):

The United captain made history by becoming the first WSL player to start 71 consecutive league matches for one club. She led by example as ever, marshalling the back line and making crucial blocks at either end of the 90. A brave double block almost created a goal for her side on the break early on, before Le Tissier put her body on the line in stoppage time to preserve the result.

Dominique Jansen (6/10):

Had a tough task dealing with the Chelsea front line and was largely solid until a short back-pass late on, with her goalkeeper needing to come out and save Jansen's blushes at the feet of Thompson. Also could have been tighter on Macario before her audacious back-heel for the Chelsea goal.

Anna Sandberg (8/10):

What a goal it was by the full-back to get her side level. Her very first goal for United, you would have never been able to tell as the 22-year-old volleyed home from long range.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Hinata Miyazawa (7/10):

Kept things ticking in midfield, while looking to play incisive passes to set United away on the attack. Did not allow the Blues to dominate in the middle of the park.

Julia Zigiotti Olme (6/10):

The Swede joined from Bayern Munich in the summer and looks at ease alongside her new team-mates. Did both sides of the game well against a tough Chelsea midfield.

Ella Toone (8/10):

The Lionesses hero showed her combination of industry and technical quality to drive United into attacking positions and create chances. She could have had a goal herself but could only shoot over the crossbar from a couple of presentable positions on the edge of the area. Also grabbed the assist for Sandberg's stunning strike.

Getty Images SportAttack

Jess Park (8/10):

Park was a bright spark in attacking areas, looking to take the game to her full-back and get shots off on goal. Though she did not provide the finish necessary to get herself on the scoresheet, her enthusiasm was clear to see.

Elisabeth Terland (6/10):

The Norwegian striker had a shot saved early on but had a largely quiet evening. Replaced just before the hour mark.

Fridolina Rolfo (6/10):

The versatile former Barcelona ace was playing further forward down the left and caused the away defence her fair share of problems. She saw a deflected strike rebound off the bar while combining well with Toone to create opportunities.

Melvine Malard (7/10):

Brought on for Terland after an hour and posed a threat to the Chelsea defence, cutting in on one occasion to force a save from Hannah Hampton.

Celine Bizet (N/A):

Replaced Riviere for the final exchanges as United looked to make an attacking change and take the game to their visitors. Though this meant they had to withstand a final late siege at the other end.

Rachel Williams (N/A):

Showed enterprise when she came on late on, looking to drive forward and make things happen on the break.

Marc Skinner (8/10):

Set up his side not only to contain the champions, but to take the game to them. United were very well deserving of a point, and could have had all three on another day.

LSG have a 5-1 record against the five-time champions, but face them in Lucknow with problems to solve. With the bat, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh have played impactful knocks. But the others, including Rishabh Pant, are yet to perform. Pant has only made 17 runs in three innings, while Ayush Badoni, whom LSG had retained, has made 51. MI began their season with back-to-back losses before bouncing back with a comprehensive win against Kolkata Knight Riders. Even without Jasprit Bumrah, MI have been among the best bowling sides this season: they are second-best in terms of wickets taken, average and economy rate.As for their batting, Suryakumar Yadav seems to be back in form, while Ryan Rickelton made a rapid half-century against KKR. But Rohit Sharma’s low returns – just 21 runs in three innings – remain a concern. This contest, then, could be a test of both teams’ batting.Form guideLucknow Super Giants: LWL

Big questionMI have a history of unearthing young Indian talent. Even Bumrah and Suryakumar first grew their T20 game at MI. This season, MI have unleashed left-arm wristspinner Vignesh Puthur and left-arm quick Ashwani Kumar to telling effect. While Puthur has four wickets in two games, Ashwani has four in one.In the spotlight: Ravi Bishnoi, and MI’s spinnersRavi Bishnoi is LSG’s highest wicket-taker since 2022. LSG retained him for INR 11 crore, but he has been expensive so far this season. He has three wickets in 11 overs at an economy rate of 12.54. In the middle overs, Bishnoi’s eight overs have for gone at 12.25 per over. The next highest for anyone to have bowled at least that many overs during that phase is Ravindra Jadeja’s 8.32. LSG will hope Bishnoi, their prime spinner, is back in rhythm before it’s too late.Mitchell Santner (left-arm orthodox), Puthur (left-arm wristspin), Mujeeb and Jacks (both offspinners) lend plenty of depth and variety to MI’s spin department. MI have the second-best economy rate (8.12) and the third-best average (27.28) of all spin-bowling teams this season, and could field three of their four spinners in Lucknow, where, if the pitch provides turn, LSG’s batters might not have it easy.Pitch and conditions: LSG to use black-soil pitchThis IPL, home advantage has become a hot topic. The red-soil pitch LSG played on against Punjab Kings did not impress their mentor Zaheer Khan, who went on to say that it looked like the opposition’s curator prepared it. Against MI, LSG will switch over to a black-soil surface, which is expected to be more spin-friendly. That could help LSG’s spinners, but they will be wary of the move backfiring against MI’s own spin contingent.Temperatures in Lucknow could touch 38 degrees Celsius during the day, but could cool down considerably by the time the game starts at 7.30pm. There’s no chance of rain.Key Stats Since 2017, 15 batters have at least 2500 runs in the IPL. Of them, Rohit Sharma has the lowest strike rate (130.09). His team-mate Suryakumar Yadav is third best at 147.98. Since the start of 2024, Nicholas Pooran comfortably leads the six-hitting charts in all T20 cricket. He has smashed 202 sixes in this period, and is far ahead of Heinrich Klaasen (121) in second place. Of the regular home grounds of the ten IPL teams since 2022, Lucknow has been the second-best spin-bowling venue behind Mullanpur in terms of both economy rate (7.44) and average (26.07).
