An unusual series of events took place during the IPL 2025 matches on April 13, in Jaipur and Delhi. The on-field umpires in both games began checking the dimensions of the bats of batters as they came in, a practice not usually seen on the field this season or previous ones.During the afternoon game between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Jaipur, the umpires Nitin Menon and Saidharshan Kumar checked the bats of at least Shimron Hetmyer, Nitish Rana and Phil Salt as they walked into bat, among others. In the evening game between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in Delhi, Chris Gaffaney and Vinod Seshan checked Hardik Pandya’s bat after he came to the middle. All the bats passed the checks.Related

Marcus Harris dominates for Lancashire with unbeaten 165

Marcus Harris made his second century of the season to help Lancashire dominate the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship match against Gloucestershire. The former Australia opener also became the first batter to pass fifty five times in his first seven innings in first-class cricket for the county and finished on 165 not out with Lancashire on 342 for five after opting to bat first on what now appears an easy-paced pitch.Such an outcome looked unlikely after the impressive Ajeet Singh Dale had taken two wickets in his first ten balls to leave the home side on 23 for two but Harris shared partnerships of 98 with Josh Bohannon and 212 with Matty Hurst, who was caught behind by James Bracey off Zaman Akhter for 78 three overs before the close.Nevertheless, Lancashire are well placed in this match between two teams who have yet to win a match this season. During his innings, Harris became the leading run-scorer in the country in either division and will go into the second day’s play with a total of 559 runs against his name this season.Yet Gloucestershire’s bowlers had dominated the first hour of the day and Singh Dale reinforced his growing reputation by bowling George Bell via body, pad and boot for 10 with his second delivery and having Keaton Jennings caught by Cameron Bancroft at second slip for four in his next overThat left Lancashire on 23 for two but after some early uncertainty Bohannon and Harris played with growing fluency and took their side to 79 for two at lunch after 28 overs, 50 of those runs having been scored in the second hour of the session. On the resumption Bohannon cruised smoothly to his half-century in 96 balls with seven fours but he was then leg before wicket to Ollie Price for 56 when he misjudged the length of an off-spinner he attempted to pull.Although that wicket ended a productive 98-run third-wicket stand, Hurst played himself in with little fuss as the wicket eased. He gave Harris excellent support and Lancashire reached tea on 189 for three with Harris unbeaten on 90 after a session in which the Gloucestershire captain, Cameron Bancroft, had rotated his bowlers frequently, albeit to limited effect.Having reached his half-century off 106 balls, Harris hit three fours off the next six deliveries and that set the tone for his second fifty. He reached his century shortly after tea with a single off Tom Price after facing 176 balls and hitting 11 fours and the six over long-on off Ollie Price that took him to 99.The evening session served merely to underline Lancashire’s dominance. Hurst reached his fifty off 98 balls and Harris took only 47 deliveries to get from 100 to 150, a picked-up six over square leg off Josh Shaw epitomising his dominance. At that point, Shaw might well have looked back with some feeling to the 14th over of the day when Harris had tried to let the ball go but only succeeded in involuntarily inside-edging it to the fine leg boundary.Singh Dale was the pick of the Gloucestershire attack but this was a day on which loose shots either didn’t find the edge or go to hand and Bancroft will hope that his batsmen can reply in kind on the second and third days of this game.First, though, he must try to prevent Lancashire collecting four batting points for the first time this season and Akhter’s late success in claiming Hurst’s wicket when the batsman appeared to pull out of a hook was a considerable fillip, especially as it was followed four balls later by a delicious yorker which castled nightwatchman Saqib Mahmood for four.Akhter’s late strikes left him with figures of two for 68 while Singh Dale finished with two for 36 from 15 tight overs.

Another record falls for Cristiano Ronaldo as Portuguese GOAT makes World Cup qualifying history with crucial goals against Hungary

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken yet another record as the Portuguese legend made World Cup qualifying history with a first-half brace in a 2-2 draw with Hungary on Tuesday. Attila Szalai gave Hungary an early lead in the eighth minute of their match but Ronaldo brought his side back in the game with an equaliser in the 22nd minute before handing the Selecao the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Portugal denied World Cup berth despite Ronaldo heroics

Portugal were on track to book a place at the World Cup next year as they had to come from behind against Hungary. The man who was responsible for leading the charge was none other than their legendary captain Ronaldo. The 40-year-old struck twice in the first half after Szalai handed the visitors an early lead, but Dominik Szoboszlai's last-minute equaliser ensured the match ended 2-2 and Portugal will have to wait until November to secure qualification.

AdvertisementRonaldo breaks World Cup qualifying record

With the equaliser against Hungary in the 22nd minute, Ronaldo went past former Guatemala international Carlos Ruiz's tally to register his 40th World Cup qualifying the most in history. He increased his tally to 41 in 50 appearances with the second goal just before the half-time whistle. He now also has 143 international goals to his name, while the all-time tally reached 947 for club and country.

CR7 eyes 1000 career goals

Ronaldo is looking to become the first player in history to reach four figures on the competitive goal front. He is within sight of that target after maintaining remarkable individual standards. Prolific strike rates have been enjoyed for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al-Nassr and Portugal in a career that has spanned over two decades now. The all-time leading scorer in Champions League and men’s international football is determined to further cement his legacy and is now just 53 goals shy of fulfilling that dream.

The former United man has even been told that goalkeepers will want to let in his 1,000th goal. Rene Meulensteen, who has worked with the Portugal icon at Old Trafford, recently said: "He will be remembered for 1,000 goals, but if it is done in a spectacular manner, if it would be done for Portugal, if you would have had a choice, then probably you would say, yeah, let's do it for Portugal. The world will be watching, telling you. Can you imagine being the goalkeeper? You want to let it in, don't you? Because you're going to be remembered as the goalkeeper that let Cristiano's 1,000th goal in."

AFPPortugal on the hunt for World Cup glory

Ronaldo has achieved almost everything in football, be it on a personal level or collectively with his clubs and the national team. He has won five Champions League titles, league titles in all four countries he has played in and the European Championship with Portugal in 2016. Yet, the only trophy that eludes the Portugal legend is the World Cup trophy. It is also something that his rival Lionel Messi won in 2022, thereby settling the GOAT debate.

However, Ronaldo should once again has a chance in North America next year. Even in the twilight of his career, the Al-Nassr star continues to remain a key player for Portugal. The Selecao will heavily bank on their captain to guide them to glory in 2026 once they secure qualification.

Klaasen: 'I owed it to the franchise to step up to the plate'

“SRH spend a lot of time and effort and a lot of money into this brand of cricket and we owe it to them,” Heinrich Klaasen says

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-20251:32

What makes Klaasen so dangerous?

A lot of “individualistic pride”, the eagerness to perform for family and franchise, and end Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH’s) disappointing IPL 2025 on a high were the catalysts for Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten 39-ball 105 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday evening.Klaasen smashed seven fours and nine sixes in the joint-third-fastest century in IPL history, propelling SRH to a towering 278 for 3. In reply, KKR were bowled out for 168 in 18.4 overs.”I want to thank my family, and the franchise,” Klaasen said after his innings. “They [SRH] spend a lot of time and effort and a lot of money into this brand of cricket and we owe it to them to step up to the plate and dish out good performances.Related

Klaasen flexes both his range and his restraint in 37-ball century

Klaasen's 105* the highlight as SRH finish IPL 2025 in style

Heinrich Klaasen enters list of IPL's fastest hundreds

“The franchise puts a lot of money into this. They’ve been around for 13, 14 years. And for us, we had a bad start to middle of the competition and it just didn’t look well on the field. For us to turn it around… and we’ve played brilliant cricket over the last three and a half games. And to just give back to them as well.”Klaasen struck at 172.69 in IPL 2025 and has had plenty of starts in the 14 innings, but has only managed a fifty and a hundred. He still finished the season as SRH’s highest run-scorer with 487 runs. Was there anything different about his approach on Sunday evening?”Not trying to hit every ball for six,” Klaasen said. “I think that’s where I went wrong this season. Hitting the hard length. [Sunil] Narine had a spell there that it was quite difficult to get away and I had to improvise a little bit. So, sticking to your hard length, mix it up and just play with his length is quite important.”It’s been a long season of disappointment and sometimes against your processes. Luckily, I stuck to it and finally I’ve got a little bit of reward tonight.”Heinrich Klaasen celebrates after hitting a 37-ball century•BCCI

Klaasen was particularly good on the pull, which has been a standout feature of his career. It is a shot that has given Klaasen a lot of success but also some grief.”I’ve worked a lot on it,” Klaasen said. “It’s been getting me out a couple of times now. So I had to spend a lot of time in the nets getting it right. Just making sure I’m picking the right length. Sometimes I challenge myself too much. But it’s all part of growing and learning. What you can do and what you can’t do.”Klaasen came in at No. 3 on Sunday but has also batted at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 this season. What, according to him, is his ideal entry point?”Look, I’m a big situation player,” Klaasen said. “That’s the whole idea in the dugout as well. Sometimes it works out that you lose that wicket just off the powerplay or the back end of the powerplay and then I can go in. So it’s normally around that fifth or sixth over or just after the powerplay. That’s ideally when I want to go in. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve still got to do the job.”

Worth even more than Anderson: Newcastle struck gold on "one of the best"

Can you hear it, the din from the summer transfer window? Newcastle United’s tumultuous market has been placed in the background, now, and Eddie Howe must be delighted that he can crack on and write another chapter into this wonderful story.

But there’s no denying the events of recent months have taken a toll on the Tyneside outfit, who have started their Premier League campaign with just two points from three games, losing that ridiculous clash against Liverpool and blanking in stalemates against Aston Villa and Leeds United.

Still, United are organised and efficient, and having signed forwards such as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa among a host of other signings, there is hope that the disappointing departure of Alexander Isak can be offset and that targets might still be hit.

But it hasn’t all been sunshines and rainbows. Isak is bound to carry his prolific nature over to Anfield, but perhaps more frustrating is the recent success of Elliot Anderson, who was sold to Nottingham Forest over a year ago to ease the strain of PSR regulations.

Why Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson

The way Isak forced his way out of Howe’s Newcastle will sting for many years. Never again will the Sweden striker receive the ball at St. James’ Park without being the recipient of a venomous chorus of boos.

But Anderson was one of the club’s own, homegrown and sold for pure profit to avoid financial ramifications. His success with Nottingham Forest over the past two years has been quite a thing, and his recent performances for the Three Lions have underscored his value.

Newcastle sold the centre-midfielder to the Tricky Trees for around £35m in 2024, but he has since become something more, hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson as a “do-it-all midfield warrior” and regarded in the Premier League as one of the driving forces of Nuno Espirito Santo’s success last season.

The 22-year-old could have been something special for Newcastle, and now serves as a reminder to keep onto those top talents who show such promise but perhaps aren’t yet equipped to maintain the consistency of their more experienced peers.

Take, for example, Anderson’s countryman Lewis Hall, who has lulled of late but remains one of the most exciting up-and-comers within the Premier League scene.

Newcastle have struck gold on Lewis Hall

Hall has spent more time than he would have liked in 2025 in the infirmary, with the full-back’s fitness problems taking away from him the building noise after an emphatic start to life at Newcastle.

It was not that long ago that Toon reporter Dominic Scurr declared Hall to be “the best left-back in the country, bar none.”

Likewise, talent scout Jacek Kulig called the 21-year-old “one of the best left-backs in the Premier League” in December 2024, with Hall firing on all cylinders and instrumental in building the form that would lead United back toward the gates of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup title.

But injury struck in the days before that Wembley meeting with Liverpool, and Hall would be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

Hall has also featured twice in the Premier League this season, but both times as a substitute and for a total of 43 minutes as he gets back up to speed. He will hope to reclaim his starting berth in the weeks to come, and on the basis of the evidence, his improvements last season suggest Howe will soon deploy him from the opening again.

Data-led platform FBref reveal Hall to rank among the top 12% of positional peers in the Premier League last year for passes attempted, the top 15% for assists and the top 20% for shot-creating actions and progressive passes per 90, so it’s clear that his technical quality is crucial to erecting the build-up patterns that define Howe’s transitional approach.

It’s also clear that this ball-playing skill aligns with the methods of some of England’s finest. Indeed, Caught Offside revealed in the months preceding the summer transfer window that Liverpool and Manchester City had both registered their interest in the young England international, who Newcastle valued at a floor of £60m.

Of course, this puts Hall above a former Toon talent such as Anderson, who left for £35m and has since seen a market growth toward the ballpark of £45m, as per Football Transfers.

The aforementioned Premier League giants both signed left-backs this summer, which perhaps signals the strength of Newcastle’s response when Hall’s name was discussed in negotiations.

Hall is a defender who can do it all. After all, he played most regularly as a robust central midfielder during his younger days, since refashioned into a wide defender. Perhaps there is a future for him in the middle of the park, where he might rival players such as Anderson for a prominent role in England’s national squad.

Newcastle might have entered something of a transitional campaign, but Howe will remain steadfast in his belief that last year’s success can be used to prop up the riches still to come at St. James’ Park.

In any case, with such exciting talents as Hall set to star for years to come, there’s every reason for excitement.

Owen Hargreaves says £30m Arsenal star proved his doubters wrong against Olympiacos

Arsenal ended up just about getting past Greek Super League champions Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday, courtesy of strikes from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

For all the chances, possession and clear-cut openings created by Mikel Arteta’s side, they held a tender 1-0 lead for the majority of the 90, and goalkeeper David Raya was forced into a magnificent first-half save to keep them ahead.

Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres also had multiple chances to extend their advantage, but the Sweden international just couldn’t quite fire home on what was a frustrating night for him.

Arsenal’s control of the match never wavered, with club captain Martin Odegaard pulling all the strings in midfield and dictating the tempo throughout.

The Norwegian’s vision and passing range constantly stretched the visitors’ defence, creating numerous opportunities, particularly for Gyokeres, with the striker feeding off Odegaard’s excellent through balls but missing the final end product.

The £30 million star was very nearly rewarded for his efforts with a goal, but was unable to convert Bukayo Saka’s cut-back very late in the second half.

Instead, it was Saka who ended up putting the game beyond sight in added time, courtesy of another excellent threaded pass from Odegaard, with the England international slotting home through goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis’ legs.

Their routine win over Olympiacos was Odegaard’s first start after coming back from a shoulder problem, and boy did he deliver on a night where he absolutely silenced his critics.

In the build up to their Champions League clash, former Arsenal player Perry Groves suggested that Arteta should continue to bench Odegaard in order to send a message and help the ex-Real Madrid man rediscover his best form.

However, Wednesday’s heroics sent a clear message in return — the 26-year-old is still one of Arteta’s superstars.

Owen Hargreaves says Martin Odegaard has proved he's still Arsenal's star man

This is echoed by TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves, who told the panel during last night’s broadcast that Odegaard was back to his “absolute best” against Olympiacos.

The £240,000-per-week playmaker now has Eberechi Eze to compete with for a place in the centre of Arsenal’s attacking midfield, alongside Ethan Nwaneri, who the Gunners wish to deploy more centrally rather than in the wide area like last season (David Ornstein).

Odegaard will undoubtedly be mindful of the growing competition for a place in Arteta’s starting elevens, but he appears to be staking his claim as an undroppable following last night’s sumptuous display and his assist against Newcastle last weekend.

Gorvin stars again for Glamorgan as Middlesex face follow-on

His 4 for 39 includes two wickets in two balls to reduce Middlesex to 155 all out, trailing by 228 runs

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay24-May-2025Glamorgan dominated day two to enforce a Middlesex follow-on overnight, seeking a third consecutive win inside three days.Andy Gorvin starred with the ball once again for Glamorgan with 4 for 39 including two wickets in two balls to reduce Middlesex to 155 all out, trailing by 228 runs.Max Holden’s strong seasonal start continued with a top-scoring 42 for the visitors after a number of starts failed to kick on in favourable bowling conditions.Middlesex batters were relieved of batting for the second time in the same day as a second rain-interruption brought an early close.Glamorgan returned for a rain-threatened day at 334 for 7 after two exceptional centuries from Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson on day one. Chris Cooke added some resistance after a slight wobble the previous evening to keep Glamorgan in the hunt for a full batting points display.A slow start to the morning with gloomy, overcast conditions saw bowlers prevail, as tends to happen in opening sessions at Sophia Gardens. Gorvin found the boundary streakily including twice in one over from Toby Roland-Jones for his 17 and Cooke fell just short of a half-century, Dane Paterson with a first wicket after bowling well on day one, Glamorgan having six overs before lunch.Former England international Sam Robson couldn’t negotiate the new ball as conditions continued to work in favour of the bowlers, this time it was the hosts’ medium and medium-fast prevailing as was the case all day.Holden looked at ease either side of lunch continuing his strong start to the season, he was unable to add a fifth score of 50 or more though when Andy Gorvin sparked a two-in-two to grab the game in Glamorgan’s favour.Luke Hollman and Leus Du Plooy both got off the mark in beautiful left-handed fashion, leaning on a cover drive. However, Hollman’s stay was short, loosely driving a nip-backer from James Harris.Du Plooy and then former Surrey batter Ben Geddes stuck around albeit to unimpactful contribution; the overcast conditions playing a bit part on Glamorgan’s surge with the ball. Debutant Matt Kuhnemann impressed with varying pace and Glamorgan’s catching remained strong as has been since they found their winning form, the only mishap being a drop from Marnus Labuschagne off Harris who dismissed Geddes later in the same dominant over, Tom Bevan also notably with a stunner to dismiss Jack Davies at square-leg.With follow-on chances looming, Glamorgan had seven overs to find the final wicket before the day’s end, doing so successfully. The improbable 10th wicket partnership required was too steep for the visitors closing play at an innings end.
